His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. This experience begins inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, a church like no other in Milan. It holds one of the city’s most unsettling spaces: an ossuary chapel lined floor to ceiling with human bones, creating a space suspended between devotion and disquiet. Created in the 12th century to house the remains from the nearby hospital’s overflowing cemetery, it still evokes questions about death, ritual and memory.

From here, the walk unfolds through the surrounding streets near the Università Statale—an area layered with centuries of medicine, mysticism and intellectual life. You’ll move between old hospital courtyards, academic buildings and silent corners.

Erica shares the background of the ossuary, the district’s layered past, and the thin boundary between science and superstition. Emanuele guides your eye helping you notice the strange harmony of details that define this part of Milan—scholarly and occult, clinical and haunted, forever suspended between two ways of knowing.
