From there, you walk through the preserved district of Saga Toriimoto, where Meiji-era townhouses now hold small family-run craft shops. You’ll visit two: a papermaker using mulberry bark and centuries-old techniques and an indigo-dyeing store.

Starting in the historic port enclave, you'll warm up by photographing street markets and cobblestone lanes lined with houses that have withstood countless earthquakes. Then, ascend to Cerro Concepción aboard a 100-year-old funicular to witness the improbable geometry of a city built on 42 hills. David will guide you through the vibrant streets, pausing to capture murals, ornate doors and sweeping vistas.

At each photo stop, David shares stories about the city and its people. He explains the symbolism behind motifs and reveals hidden messages tucked into the city’s art and architecture. Before you even reach for your camera, he’ll invite you to trace your hands over the weather-worn corrugated metal of these enchanted homes—and fall into step with the rhythm of Valparaiso.

While the hills of Concepción and Alegre burst with color and art, the port enclave of Barrio Puerto is more subdued. Starting here offers an alternate view of Valparaíso—one rooted in everyday life. You’ll see fishmongers calling out their catch and locals hunting for the ripest avocados. David facilitates small exchanges with vendors and helps you frame compelling photographic moments.

As the tour shifts to the city’s better-known quarters, David avoids postcard clichés. He’ll guide you down quieter alleys, urging you to notice hidden textures and play with perspective. He’ll share the meanings behind local street art—including clever in-jokes—and remind you to look up, down, and behind.

Sacromonte was the birthplace of the zambra — flamenco was shaped inside the caves you’ll walk through. In the Museum, you see spaces that recreate daily life: loom rooms, forges, kitchens, animal shelters. This gives you context most flamenco tours never include. From the hill’s terraces, you see the Alhambra from a beloved viewpoint.

This is a day trip journey from Guadalajara to the Western Sierra, focused on coffee, artisans, myth, and mountains, guided by an anthropologist, exploring people and place. 

You leave Guadalajara early, tracing the road west into the Western Sierra — scenic landscapes of red earth and pine slopes. Your first stop is Amacueca. Here, farmers show how cherries are hand-picked, pulped, roasted — the scent is warm and nutty. You taste a cup brewed on the spot.

The route continues to Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico of whitewashed walls and timber balconies. You wander its plaza and visit selected artisans. 

Later, at the Enigma Valleys, giant stones stand scattered. Alejandro shares local legends — of spirits, giants, storms — that have made this site both sacred and mysterious. You understand why these boulders are more than geology: they’re reminders of endurance.

It’s a full day — mountain air, conversation, cultural heritage, and a sense that Jalisco belongs to those who live its rhythm.

In Tapalpa, Alejandro introduces artisans he selects for their quality, people he has long trusting relationships with — you see leather tanned with natural oils, clay that fires to a deep rust tone, maguey fibers hand-braided for strength. The first stop is Amacueca, a tranquil highland town nestled in Jalisco’s Western Sierra known for its pitayas –(cactus fruit), centuries-old Catholic heritage (the oldest Catholic temple and convent in western Mexico), and emerging coffee culture. Here, faith, agriculture, and artistry have intertwined for generations.

You’ll walk through the cobbled streets to a family-run coffee farm and roastery, where the scent of roasting beans mingles with the mountain air. Here, you explore small-scale coffee plots, learn about hand-picking and roasting, and see how altitude and microclimate influence flavor.  Of course, you’ll sit for a cup brewed fresh from the local roast.



The Western Sierra de Amacueca region produces shade-grown arabica coffee with mild acidity and chocolate/nutty notes. It is one of western Mexico’s most authentic coffee regions, its small farms overshadowed by Jalisco’s more famous agave fields but no less remarkable in craftsmanship. In this stop, you step directly into that continuity — from colonial spirituality to contemporary agricultural artistry.

Your guide, an anthropologist, ties these threads together: how the first missionaries built the convent that still anchors the town; how Catholic rituals merged with indigenous cycles of rain and harvest; and how today’s farmers use traditional shade and hand-roasting techniques to sustain biodiversity and quality.

We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown.

The Museu do Oriente in Lisbon, inaugurated in 2008, is a testament to Portugal's historical maritime connections with Asia. Housed in a transformed bacalhau warehouse along the Tagus river, the museum showcases the profound cultural exchanges between Portugal and the Asian continent. Why we recommend visiting:

The first collection highlights the Portuguese presence in Asia with over a thousand pieces, including rare Namban art, Chinese and Japanese folding screens, and an extensive porcelain collection. Museu do Oriente

Paisagem Protegida Local da Fonte da Benémola and Rocha da Pena are two of Portugal’s hidden natural treasures in the Algarve region. Both areas offer an escape into the countryside, ideal for walks through diverse ecosystems and picturesque trails that showcase a different side of the Algarve’s beauty beyond its famous beaches.

1. Fonte da Benémola is a lush, river-fed landscape where springs and wetlands create a cool, green oasis. Along the gentle paths, you’ll see a unique mix of vegetation like oleanders and tamarisks, and may even spot wildlife such as turtles, kingfishers, and otters. The relatively flat trail makes it a family-friendly spot to experience the Algarve’s natural wonders.

2. Rocha da Pena, known for its impressive limestone cliffs, provides a more challenging hike with breathtaking panoramic views. The trail ascends to a plateau at about 480 meters, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas over the Algarve countryside. Rocha da Pena also holds historical significance, with ancient fortifications and caves that were once inhabited by prehistoric people.

3. Both areas support a rich variety of plant and animal life. From Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme to rare orchids, these landscapes are a haven for biodiversity. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy spotting species like eagles and falcons soaring high above.

4. Informational signs and well-marked trails in both locations enhance the experience by highlighting the natural and cultural importance of these landscapes.

5. These peaceful areas also make perfect picnic spots. Shaded areas near the Fonte da Benémola springs or the Rocha da Pena plateau provide scenic and serene locations to relax with a meal.

Both areas are accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer especially pleasant weather.

Algarve’s Picturesque Trails

Jamaica

A Black River Safari took us into the heart of the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem in Jamaica, the Great Morass at the Black River. This area, spanning 125 square miles, is a haven for biodiversity, featuring giant mangrove trees and an array of swamp animals, including the endangered American crocodile, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in Jamaica. 

The guides spotted crocodiles of various sizes in the water and along the riverbanks, including baby crocodiles. Also several bird species call this area home. As we glided along the river, we saw snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons, among other bird species.

The River teems with mangrove trees, ferns, and water lilies. The mangroves are particularly noteworthy, with some species having roots extending 40 feet downward. A curious aspect of the Black River is its dark color, which becomes more noticeable as you move upstream. This is due to the peat soil at the bottom of the river, which, despite giving the river its dark appearance, keeps the water clear. 

If you're interested in learning more about the crocodiles, many tours conclude with a visit to the Crocodile Nursery, where young and injured crocodiles are cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.

Mangroves + Crocodiles

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the Luis Barragán House & Studio (Casa Estudio Luis Barragán), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Istanbul Modern

The Temple of Debod is an authentic ancient Egyptian temple nestled in the heart of Madrid. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was originally constructed in Egypt but now stands as a striking monument in Madrid's Parque del Oeste. The temple was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, symbolizing gratitude for Spain's assistance in saving the Abu Simbel temples during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Top 5 Things to know:
1. The Temple of Debod was initially built by the Kushite king Adikhalamani in Nubia, close to the religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis. It was dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun and later expanded and dedicated to Isis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
2. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several expansions and renovations. Prominent Roman emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations, adding to its historical and artistic significance.
3. In 1960, due to the Aswan High Dam's construction, UNESCO made an international call to save several historical monuments. As a token of gratitude for Spain's aid, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain. It was meticulously dismantled, transported, and reconstructed in Madrid's Parque del Oeste, opening to the public in 1972.
4. The temple, surrounded by a pool of water, comprises three main reconstructed monuments. It retains its original stone-built enclosure wall, pylon gateways, and the sanctuary of Amun. The layout and decorations provide insight into ancient Egyptian religious practices and architectural styles.
5. The temple's continued exposure to the elements has been a subject of concern. In response, Madrid's city council decided in 2020 to accelerate plans to protect and preserve this unique historical monument.
This is a perfect place to see sunset from. Entry is free. Visits are capped at 30 minutes.

With its steady Atlantic winds, wide shoreline, and laid-back vibe, the beach attracts adventure seekers, surfers, and sunbathers alike. Whether you’re an experienced kitesurfer or just looking to try something new, Essaouira Beach offers the perfect blend of sport, relaxation, and breathtaking scenery.


1. The beach’s consistent trade winds make it a paradise for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with schools offering lessons for beginners and equipment rentals for pros.

2. Long stretches of soft, golden sand make it ideal for sunbathing, beach walks, or simply enjoying views of the Skala de la Ville and the nearby Mogador Island.

Armani Silos is a fashion museum in Milan that celebrates the distinguished 40-year journey of Giorgio Armani. This unique space, which opened its doors in 2015, offers a comprehensive exploration of Armani's significant impact on the world of fashion. A visit to Armani Silos is a journey through the annals of fashion history, marked by the creative genius of Giorgio Armani. Why visit:

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night.
