Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. Náhuatl is a language under threat, and this community speaks a particularly distinct dialect of it. The people in this community only keep this language alive by speaking it amongst themselves. In an interactive language class led by a native Náhuatl speaker from the community, travelers will learn the basics of this ancient language. The class is designed to not only teach the language but also to provide an immersive understanding of the cultural significance behind the words and expressions used by the Náhuatl people. 

During your tour through the fields, your hosts will also point of wild plants still used today for their medicinal and flavorsome properties. This is part of their domestic conservation of traditional knowledge. In addition, guests will assist the community in removing litter from the fields and roadsides.

Octavio Alonso González is a Mexican linguist interested in the dissemination of Náhuatl. It is dedicated to the conservation and promotion of Nahua heritage. Its staff is excited to welcome travelers who want to be part of this wonderful experience.

In the town, you will be hosted by Guillermina Ríos Palma, a speaker of the San Mateo Almomoloa dialect of Náhuatl. She has stood out for her dedication to preserving her native tongue. She has participated as a lead collaborator in linguistic documentation projectssuch as the Náhuatl Dialectology Project led by the National Institute of Indigenous Languages. She has also been active in compiling vocabulary to safeguard linguistic memory. Guillermina is an authentic and proud Indigenous woman who, along with her family, is always willing to share her lifestyle and the deep connection her community has with nature.

Explore life above the Blue City on this full-day trip into Chefchaouen’s surrounding mountains. Your day begins at the Spanish Mosque, then set out for a 3-hour hike through peaceful trails at the edge of the Rif Mountains. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”
