This hands-on art and storytelling experience immerses you in Chilean art, culture, and mythology in the relaxed setting of a multifaceted artist's studio in a peaceful suburb north of Valparaíso. Marcela's home studio overlooks one of Concón's quaint fishing hamlets and sets the scene for an afternoon of creativity and calm.

Before starting, Marcela will share anecdotes relating to Concón and Valparaíso. Under her guidance, you'll try your hand at crafting a monotype print inspired by Chile's landscapes and mythology. Marcela will support you through creating the design and nurturing your natural talent and proving that everyone has an inner artist. By the time the activity is complete, your print will be ready to take away. No prior experience or skills in drawing or printmaking are necessary. To conclude your trip to Concón, Marcela will serve a light "once" of tea and pastries as well as recommending local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

The experience provides rare access to the home studio of a professional Chilean artist. Marcela's portfolio spans lithography, painting, and folk art and she will share rich insight into Chile's artisanal legacy and culture while you create—storytelling lies at the heart of this activity. Marcela's studio stands above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concón, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This quiet area is rarely visited by international tourists which means you'll experience a truly local community. 

In terms of inspiration, you only need glance outside where dunes tumble to meet the waves of the Pacific and seals cling to rocky crags. This residential neighborhood is alive with flora and avifauna while Marcela, well-versed in Chilean mythology, has further visual prompts to kindle your creativity. Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist. Born in 1965, Marcela grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis, USA, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at Casa Plan in Valparaíso.

We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Antalya, Turkey, is home to the breathtaking Düden Waterfalls, a stunning natural attraction split into Upper Düden Waterfall, hidden in a lush forest, and Lower Düden Waterfall, which dramatically plunges into the Mediterranean Sea. These waterfalls, fed by the Düden River, offer a refreshing escape from the city and a spectacular setting for nature lovers and photographers alike.


1. Lower Düden Waterfall, cascading 40 meters (131 feet) off a cliff into the Mediterranean, is best viewed from Düden Park or by taking a boat tour for an up-close experience.

2. Upper Düden Waterfall, set in a shaded parkland, features caves and walking trails behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to experience the cascading water from a unique perspective.

3. The surrounding Düden Park offers scenic walking paths, picnic areas, and panoramic sea views, making it a great spot to relax.

4. Boat tours from Antalya’s harbor provide stunning views of Lower Düden Waterfall from the sea, an ideal option for photographers.

Düden Waterfalls

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the breathtaking Palacio de Bellas Artes, an architectural masterpiece and the country’s premier cultural venue. Completed in 1934, this iconic palace seamlessly blends Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles on the outside, with a lavish interior featuring murals by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Known as the cultural heart of Mexico City, it hosts performances by the National Opera and the Ballet Folklórico de México while also serving as a museum and exhibition space for visual arts.


1. The building’s stunning marble façade and domed roof covered in colorful glass tiles make it one of Mexico City’s most photogenic landmarks.

2. Inside, admire the famous Diego Rivera mural, Man at the Crossroads, originally commissioned for Rockefeller Center and later recreated here.

3. The Ballet Folklórico de México offers spectacular performances of traditional Mexican dance and music, making for an unforgettable cultural experience.

Palacio de Bellas Artes

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

In Lisbon's historic Belém district, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stands as a monumental testimony to Portugal's Age of Discovery. The neighborhoods of Psiri and Metaxourgeio in Athens are vibrant open-air galleries where street art tells stories of culture, politics, and creativity. Known for their edgy, artistic vibes, these districts showcase works from renowned international artists and talented locals alike. With colorful murals, thought-provoking graffiti, and playful stencils, these streets invite visitors to explore Athens’ contemporary artistic heartbeat beyond its ancient ruins. 
1. Psiri boasts a mix of large-scale murals and quirky graffiti that reflect the neighborhood’s lively, bohemian spirit. Themes range from political messages to playful and surreal imagery.
2. In Metaxourgeio, street art leans more towards thought-provoking and experimental works, often addressing social issues and urban life. The blend of crumbling buildings and striking art adds to its gritty charm. 
3. Renowned artists like WD (Wild Drawing), Sonke, and INO have left their mark here, making the area a magnet for street art enthusiasts. 
4. Art coexists with trendy cafes, bars, and galleries, creating an atmosphere where creativity and social life merge seamlessly. 
5. Many works are dynamic and ever-changing, as new pieces replace older ones, ensuring that every visit offers fresh surprises.

Street Art in Psiri

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Museum, one of the most renowned museums dedicated to preserving and showcasing Greek folk art, culture, and traditions. Founded in 1974 by Ioanna Papantoniou, a celebrated stage and costume designer, the museum has won the European Museum of the Year Award and features a rich collection of traditional costumes, textiles, tools, and everyday objects from across the Peloponnese. Housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, this museum offers an immersive journey through Greece’s rich cultural heritage.

1. The museum’s extensive collection of traditional Greek costumes, including intricate embroidery and elaborate jewelry, highlights the craftsmanship and regional diversity of Peloponnesian dress.

3. The stage design collection reflects the founder’s background in theater, featuring elaborate costumes and set designs from Greek productions.

4. A beautifully curated children’s section showcases traditional toys and games, offering a fun and educational experience for younger visitors.

5. The museum shop features handcrafted textiles, books, and locally made gifts, perfect for those looking to take home a piece of Greek folk culture.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and allow time to explore nearby Syntagma Square. Don’t miss the temporary exhibitions, which often feature modern interpretations of Greek folk art.

The Spanish Steps, gracefully ascending from Piazza di Spagna to Trinità dei Monti church, are a cultural symbol of Rome. Renowned for their elegant design and vibrant atmosphere, the steps offer a unique blend of architectural beauty, historical significance, and urban charm. Top 5 things to look for:
 
1 - Historical Context: The Spanish Steps, designed in the 18th century by Francesco de Sanctis, are an architectural marvel. With their irregular butterfly design, the steps gracefully connect the lower Piazza di Spagna with the upper piazza housing the Trinità dei Monti church. 

2 - Piazza di Spagna and the Barcaccia Fountain: At the foot of the steps, the Piazza di Spagna is a lively square where locals and tourists converge, especially for the evening passeggiata (traditional stroll by the locals). The centerpiece is the Barcaccia Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece by Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This unique fountain, resembling a sinking ship, adds to the picturesque scene.
