The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant before heading to the Ifuji Ningyo Shop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher will be a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

This full day experience gives you a rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of Japanese dolls, learning how they are made and getting a chance to participate in the process, and viewing works of art in a museum. The three-hour workshop led by a master artisan is not a rushed, assembly line experience, but a naturally paced opportunity to appreciate the skills required to manufacture these dolls and chat with the artisan about their work.

While many centers of traditional crafts are located far from Tokyo in difficult-to-reach locations, Iwatsuki is conveniently accessible by train in Saitama Prefecture, just an hour from central Tokyo, making it a perfect way to spend a day experiencing a unique aspect of Japanese culture.

Spain

San Sebastián’s famed pastry culture blends French influence with Basque tradition, creating unique sweets. You’ll explore three distinct San Sebastián neighborhoods through their signature sweets. Your journey begins in Egia, where you’ll be introduced to the Basque language and culture, and even learn how to order coffee like a local.

Cross the river to the City Centre, an area developed in the late 19th century as the city expanded beyond its old walls. The final stop, the Old Town, is where bakeries and history converge. At Otaegui, founded in 1886, you’ll taste classic Basque pastries first created during the Spanish Civil War. Nearby, you’ll uncover how San Sebastián’s past as a Napoleonic fortress shaped daily life, including stories of soldiers, fountains, and the 1813 fire that nearly destroyed the city.

Mexico

This private 90-minute mezcal tasting is designed for first-timers curious about agave spirits, as well as longtime fans seeking a short, deeply rooted way to gain new appreciation. Andrea — an anthropologist and longtime resident of Coyoacán with family roots in Guerrero — begins with a brief walk near her studio in a neighborhood shaped by the encounter of colonial and Indigenous cultures — the roots from which mezcal emerged.

Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Each mezcal is paired with locally inspired bites, drawing on the Guerrero heritage Andrea brings to both her cooking and design, and curated to enhance and echo the complexity of the spirits.

Andrea has spent years sourcing, bottling, and sharing small-batch mezcal from Guerrero. Saddle up for a 1.5-hour horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with the family over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and local Mendocinian wine. After dinner, gather around the bonfire with a glass of wine and enjoy a brief folk guitar session—a traditional gaucho touch that brings the night to life under a sky heavy with stars.

Emerging at the end of the 18th century, it was a movement that embraced not only architecture but all the arts, from poetry to song, literature and crafts. This walking tour in Barcelona’s Eixample district lets you in on the secrets of Modernisme, and the cultural renaissance that set out to make Barcelona the most ‘modern’ city in Europe. Led by experts, it puts the work of Gaudi in context, as we view outstanding works by other architects of the period, some stunning interiors, and the first-ever examples of an ‘urbanised’ city. We generally try and pick clients up from their hotel (we find that most are staying in the Eixample anyway). I start with a quick chat on the history and development of the Eixample using maps and visuals. After this, we commence walking - the distance we cover is not great, around 1.5-2kms. At the end we sit down in an emblematic cafe or bar in the modernista style for a drink where we discuss what we have seen and I give them further information and tips for their stay.

Chile

This is a full-day photography journey to the high Andean salt flats on the Chilean Altiplano. Located in the northeastern corner of the Atacama Desert near the border with Bolivia, Quepiaco, Quisquiro, and Tara are among the most visually striking and ecologically unique landscapes in the region. These salt flats—salars—sit at elevations between 4,000-4,500m (13,000-14,800 feet) above sea level and are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Bounded by volcanoes and inhabited by flamingos and vicuñas, this is a remarkable setting for both landscape and wildlife photography.

At each salt flat, Mirko will explain the geological features of the wetlands and salt crusts, point out native wildlife, and provide practical instruction on how to photograph it. Because of the high elevation, this tour is best scheduled for your third day or later in San Pedro de Atacama, after you’ve had time to acclimatize.

This experience starts with a thrilling drive through the Martian landscapes of the Atacama Desert. This is a prime opportunity for quizzing Mirko about the region: it's natural history, its cultural legacy, and its wildlife. Salar de Quepiaco, Salar de Quisquiro, and Salar de Tara straddle the border between Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. They provide a habitat for all three species of South American flamingos (Andean, Chilean, and James’s) as well as llamas, vicuñas, and Andean foxes. As part of the Andean Plateau (Altiplano), these salt flats hold cultural significance for Indigenous Atacameño communities.

This curated half-day tour begins at the edges of Arashiyama, away from the crowds, in a moss-covered temple filled with 1,200 small stone figures. You’ll visit Giōji Temple, a quiet sanctuary tied to the Heike Monogatari, where a once-famous dancer became a nun. The moss garden and bamboo groves here feel like a story being slowly told.

From there, you walk through the preserved district of Saga Toriimoto, where Meiji-era townhouses now hold small family-run craft shops. You’ll visit two: a potter who blends old forms with modern design, a papermaker using mulberry bark and centuries-old techniques, indigo-dyeing store, or a family kimono shop.

The tour ends with a simple, seasonal lunch in a traditional home overlooking a garden.

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”
