Perched above Florence on the hill of San Miniato al Monte, the Porte Sante Cemetery offers one of the most striking views of the city. Join a vibrant carnival buzzing with excitement! On Shrove Tuesday 17, February, the grand parade of the Carnevale of Tempio Pausania unfolds, culminating in the dramatic trial of Re Giorgio, accused of the city's woes. Thousands gather in the square as the float representing the king meets its fiery fate, marking the end of an exhilarating Carnevale.

After a traditional lunch, and led by local photographer Gianmario Pedroni, you'll cross streets filled with colorful guests—flag-wavers, majorettes, and musicians—each adding to the spectacle. Costumed performers dance energetically, their masks telling stories of tradition and playful anonymity.

Among the masks, you'll see the enigmatic Domino, a black cloaked mask exclusive to Tempio Pausania, used to tease friends or approach a long-desired love. You'll also meet the raucous “lu traicogghju”, echoing the carnival's wild past, and “lu linzolu cupaltatu”, a local mask created from a bedsheet.

This experience is very exclusive: Led by the official photographer of the event, Gianmario Pedroni, you will be able to access special areas closed to the public to see and photograph the parade up-close. As the son of a local float constructor, Gianmario shares insight into behind-the-scenes stories of the artisans and their work. Starting the tour at his studio allows you to see and hear the stories of his work. 

Shrove Tuesday in Tempio Pausania reaches its pinnacle with the dramatic trial of King Giorgio, culminating in the fiery end of his float. This captivating spectacle attracts thousands, seamlessly blending tradition and entertainment in a vibrant atmosphere.

You'll capture the authentic spirit of the Carnival and encounter unique masks, and witness the colossal pyre that symbolizes both the conclusion of the Carnival and a powerful renewal. Burning the King of Carnival is a propitiatory rite, representing a scapegoat whose sacrifice frees the community from all its ills.

As the son of a float constructor, Gianmario has always been closely involved in the creation of the floats and continues to collaborate in their construction.

This exclusive experience in Athens dives into the hidden and gritty history of Piraeus, exploring its underground life, the rebetiko music scene, and the city’s transformation after the war. 

We'll uncover the layers of Piraeus’ rich and often controversial past, from its bustling port life to its red-light district and its role as a melting pot for refugees, sailors, and locals. Participants walk through historical streets, hear stories of the infamous Trouba neighbourhood through the eyes of a witness of those changes.

The journey highlights the origins and significance of rebetiko, a raw and emotional music genre born from hardship and resilience, and performed in secretive venues like tekké taverns. The experience culminates in a traditional-style restaurant where live rebetiko music sets the mood, immersing guests in an authentic atmosphere with food, wine, and storytelling. Next, we stroll along Filonos Street, uncovering remnants of Trouba’s past amidst modern bars and old buildings. At the historic site of the John Bull Bar, we delve into Trouba’s nightlife and its shocking stories.

All my life, I called it |trom-sow|, but the locals insist on |troom-sa|. 

The drive through Andøya and Senja was so spectacular that we wanted to abandon our itinerary and stay on the islands overnight vs. driving into Tromsø. And then I would have missed a dramatic sunset/dawn. Everything - sky, sea, windows on buildings, Arctic Church, mountain tops - blazed fiery red for an hour before turning into several shades of blue, with bright pink thrown in for effect. It stayed like that all night long. 

The locals can’t seem to stop partying through Friday night all along Storgata, so the people-watching is riveting. We’ve got to sleep at some point, we kept telling each other.
