Corviale is one of the most ambitious and controversial housing projects ever built in Rome. Conceived in 1972 and stretching for nearly a kilometer, this massive complex—locally known as Il Serpentone (“the big snake”)—was inspired by Brutalist and Rationalist architecture and designed to house 8,500 people.

Walking through Corviale today means entering the layered story of a city that, in the 1970s, faced deep social inequality—when a third of its population still lived in shack settlements. This experience unfolds as a moving urban workshop: you’ll explore the hopes and failures that shaped this space, from its utopian promise of public housing to the long years of abandonment, marginalization, and stigma.

As the district undergoes a slow and ongoing transformation, this walk invites you to question what renewal really means, and how architecture, policy, and community intersect in the making—and remaking—of a city.

The walk begins at Esplanade des Quinconces, where Victoria introduces Bordeaux as a city shaped by its river and by centuries of maritime commerce. The Chartrons quays, a stretch of 18th-century façades, once framed the work of wine merchants and brokers linked to the Port de la Lune.

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.

Culture Shock

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the most stunning examples of Marinid-era Islamic architecture. Built in the 14th century by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, this madrasa (Islamic school) served as both a center of learning and a place of worship. Unlike many religious sites in Morocco, Bou Inania is one of the few madrasas open to non-Muslim visitors, allowing them to admire its breathtaking zellij tilework, intricate wood carvings, and grand courtyard. A masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, the madrasa is a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and photography.

1. The grand entrance, framed by an elaborately carved cedarwood door, welcomes visitors into a world of geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy, and fine stucco work.

2. The courtyard, with its marble floors, central fountain, and exquisite zellij tile mosaics, is a striking example of Moroccan-Andalusian design and a perfect spot for photography.

3. Towering above the medina, the madrasa’s green-tiled minaret is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Fez and can be admired from various rooftops around the city.

4. The student quarters, featuring small but beautifully decorated rooms, provide insight into the daily life of scholars who once studied theology, astronomy, and law within these walls.

5. The tranquil ambiance of the madrasa, combined with its artistic mastery, offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling souks just outside its doors.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the late morning for the best lighting to capture the intricate details of the carvings and mosaics. Arrive early to avoid crowds and fully appreciate the serenity of this historic site.

Bou Inania Madrasa

Santa Teresa Gallura, located on Sardinia’s northernmost point, is a picturesque seaside town known for its stunning beaches, fascinating history, and vibrant atmosphere. Offering breathtaking views of the Strait of Bonifacio and easy access to Corsica, this charming destination is perfect for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a relaxed coastal retreat. 
1. Rena Bianca Beach is the town’s crown jewel, with its fine white sand and shallow, turquoise waters perfect for swimming, making it a favorite for families and beachgoers. 
2. The Torre di Longonsardo, a 16th-century Spanish watchtower, offers sweeping views of the coastline and the cliffs of Corsica across the sea. 
3. The rugged Capo Testa peninsula, just a short drive away, is a paradise for hikers and explorers, featuring dramatic granite formations, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters. 
4. The bustling town center is home to lively piazzas, charming shops, and inviting restaurants where visitors can savor Sardinian specialties like fresh seafood and local wines.

Alsancak is one of İzmir’s liveliest districts, where historic charm meets modern entertainment. Its narrow streets are lined with well-preserved buildings, trendy cafes, and boutique shops, creating a perfect blend of culture and modernity. As night falls, the area comes alive with music, laughter, and the hum of a vibrant nightlife scene.

Surrounded by stunning mountainous landscapes, this village offers visitors a chance to explore Sardinia’s deep traditions and vibrant contemporary spirit. 
1. The murals are the village’s most striking feature, with over 150 vivid paintings adorning walls, depicting themes of politics, social justice, and daily life. These works, which began in the 1960s, reflect both local struggles and global events. 
2. Orgosolo’s traditional culture remains strong, with festivals, Sardinian music, and local crafts offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s heritage. 
3. The village is surrounded by the Supramonte Mountains, providing a stunning natural backdrop and opportunities for hiking, exploring caves, and admiring panoramic views. 
4. The Museum of Sardinian Life and Folk Traditions showcases the region’s history, including traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts. 
5. Local restaurants and trattorias serve Sardinian specialties, such as porceddu (roast suckling pig) and pane carasau, offering a taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage.

Orgosolo

İzmir Bird Paradise, also known as Kuş Cenneti, is a protected wetland and bird sanctuary home to over 200 bird species. Its marshes and observation towers make it an ideal destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers seeking a glimpse of rare and migratory birds.
1. The sanctuary is rich in birdlife, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons.
2. Seasonal migrations make it possible to spot rare bird species throughout the year.
3. Walking paths allow visitors to explore the wetlands without disturbing the wildlife.
4. Observation towers provide excellent views and opportunities for birdwatching.
5. It is a paradise for photographers, with vibrant bird species and scenic wetlands.
Visitor Tip: Bring binoculars for a closer view of the birds and visit during spring or autumn for the best sightings.

İzmir Bird Paradise

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

Portugal is home to vast cork oak forests (montados), particularly in the Alentejo region, where traditional cork harvesting has been practiced for centuries. Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, used for everything from wine stoppers to sustainable fashion. These forests not only support rural communities but also provide a crucial habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Iberian lynx. A guided visit to a cork farm offers a fascinating look into this eco-friendly industry, from the hand-harvesting process to the transformation of cork into everyday products.

The Cattedrale di Monreale, located on the slopes overlooking Palermo, is a breathtaking example of 12th-century Norman architecture fused with Byzantine and Arab influences. Renowned for its stunning gold-leaf mosaics, the cathedral represents a high point in medieval art and stands as a testament to Sicily's rich cultural tapestry. Here are the key highlights:

1. Magnificent Mosaics: The cathedral's most remarkable feature is its extensive Byzantine mosaics. Covering about 6,400 square meters, these gold-background mosaics depict various biblical stories, offering a visual feast that is both educational and awe-inspiring.

2. Norman Architecture with Multicultural Influences: Reflecting the multicultural heritage of Sicily, the cathedral combines the best of Norman construction techniques with Byzantine and Arab artistic sensibilities. This fusion is evident in its layout, design, and decorative elements.
