We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. It boasts an outdoor terrace, perfect for further drinks and engaging conversation.

This four-hour walking experience immerses you in Barrio Yungay, one of Santiago de Chile’s oldest neighborhoods. This enclave was laid out shortly after Chile's Independence, and traces the transition from colonial rule to a modern, 19th century capital city. Its history mirrors Chile’s social, political, and architectural evolution, while Héctor’s experience focuses on art, history, and memory. As one of the most authentic parts of the city, you will experience the "real life" of a santiaguino or santiaguina.

Much of the route highlights the street art of Barrio Yungay. As Héctor shows, these murals speak of resistance, culture, nature, and much more. The walk zigzags through the streets, where every block has something unique to reveal. Along the way, you visit a local art gallery and learn about the ten artists whose work is exhibited there. You also stop at one of the world’s oldest continuously operating barbershops, where you can pause for a bite at its café.

This full-day gastronomic experience takes you through the landscapes of Istria, Croatia, for a deeper look at two of the region’s best-known food traditions: truffles and cheese. 

The day begins with pick-up from your accommodation, followed by a drive into central Istria for a visit with a truffle-hunting family near the Motovun forest. After a welcome drink, you head into the woods for an interactive truffle hunt with specially trained dogs. The experience continues with a three-course brunch centered on truffles, accompanied by a short introduction to truffle hunting and the products connected to it.

From there, the journey continues to a free-range goat farm, where you learn about cheese production and goat herding, meet the animals, and sample seasonal organic cheeses. The Varvakios Central Market in Athens is a sensory feast and a bustling hub of local life. Located in the heart of the city, this vibrant marketplace is the place to explore the culinary traditions of Greece. Known for its lively atmosphere, Varvakios offers fresh produce, seafood, meats, and spices, making it a paradise for foodies and curious travelers eager to experience authentic Athenian culture. 
1. The seafood and meat halls are the market’s centerpiece, offering a wide variety of fresh catches and quality cuts displayed with the flair of a true marketplace spectacle. 
2. The fresh produce stalls are brimming with colorful fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, showcasing the flavors of the Mediterranean. 
3. Traditional Greek delicacies and pantry items like olives, cheeses, honey, and dried herbs make this an ideal spot to shop for souvenirs or ingredients. 
4. The market is surrounded by small eateries and tavernas, where visitors can sample authentic dishes like souvlaki, grilled fish, or hearty stews. 
5. The lively atmosphere is enriched by the sounds, sights, and interactions with local vendors, who often engage in lively banter with customers. 
Visitor Tip: Allocate 1–2 hours for a visit, and come in the morning to experience the market at its liveliest. Bring cash, as many vendors don’t accept cards, and wear comfortable shoes for navigating the bustling halls.

Varvakios Central Market

Mexico

The Mayan culture is one of the most important indigenous cultures in Southern Mexico. Artifacts from bygone times stretch far across the jungles of Quintana Roos and Chiapas. 

If you want to learn more about how indigenous peoples lived before colonization, don't miss the ruins of Palenque. Arguably the largest Mayan ruins on the continent, they're tucked away, deeply hidden in the Mexican jungle. The highlights of the actual ruins are the numerous temples, a palace and aqueducts, and of course, a guided tour where you can learn all about Mexico's history. If you venture out into the jungle, you'll encounter rare wildlife like monkeys, colorful birds, and giant snakes.

Take sunscreen, plenty of water, and some snacks, as the tour takes at least half a day.

Visit Ancient Mayan Ruins

Colombia

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

The Ortigia Cathedral, or Duomo di Siracusa, located in the historical heart of Syracuse on the island of Ortigia, is a magnificent blend of history, architecture, and art. This cathedral, with its layers of historical and architectural evolution, stands as a testament to the rich and varied history of Sicily. Key highlights include:

1. Originally a Greek Doric temple dedicated to Athena, the structure was transformed into a church when Syracuse became a part of the Roman Empire. Over centuries, it has been rebuilt and modified, incorporating elements of Norman, Byzantine, and Baroque architecture, making it a living museum of architectural styles.

2. The cathedral's current façade is a stunning example of Sicilian Baroque, characterized by its dramatic columns, intricate sculptures, and ornate details, typical of the 18th-century Baroque style prevalent in Sicily.

5. The Piazza Duomo, in front of the cathedral, offers a splendid setting with its Baroque buildings and open-air cafes, making it a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

Visiting the Ortigia Cathedral provides an insight into the diverse cultural and historical influences that have shaped Syracuse, making it a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and the enduring spirit of Sicily.

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the enchanting Essaouira Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unique blend of Moroccan, Berber, Arab, and European architectural influences. Built in the 18th century and designed by French engineer Théodore Cornut, the medina’s grid-like layout and fortified walls reflect a rare fusion of European military design with traditional Islamic architecture. With its whitewashed buildings, blue-shuttered windows, and maze of cobbled streets, the medina offers an unforgettable experience for culture lovers, shoppers, and photographers alike.


1. Narrow, winding alleys lined with artisan shops selling handcrafted goods, including woodwork, jewelry, woven textiles, and traditional Moroccan ceramics.

2. The medina’s vibrant souk offers everything from spices and leather goods to locally produced argan oil and natural beauty products.

3. Admire the striking blue and white architecture, with charming doorways and colorful shutters that reflect Essaouira’s laid-back, coastal character.

4. Discover hidden art galleries and cafés, where you can relax and enjoy the medina’s bohemian vibe, often accompanied by live Gnawa music performances.

5. Historic landmarks like the Mellah (Jewish Quarter) and old Synagogue Slat Lkahal offer insight into the city’s multicultural past and enduring sense of tolerance.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning for a quieter, more intimate experience, or explore in the late afternoon when the golden sunlight casts beautiful shadows on the walls. Don’t forget to bargain in the souks—friendly negotiation is part of the fun!
