This hands-on craft experience is hosted a kintsugi artisan, Satoko, who has been teaching the art and philosophy of this traditional Japanese technique in Kyoto for several years.

The workshop begins with a relaxing tea time, during which you'll be able to get to know your host and learn about her background in kintsugi. From there, you'll learn the history and aesthetics of kintsugi while handling finished pieces created by your host. As you admire the gold-lined cracks, Satoko will walk you through each step of the process and introduce the traditional tools and materials you’ll use — including some that you’ll prepare by hand.

Then, it’s time to practice. You’ll repair a broken ceramic piece using lacquer and real gold powder — that draws the eye to the details. Throughout the session, your hosts offer individual guidance to ensure your piece becomes a personal and beautiful expression of this philosophy.

Set in a private room in a Kyoto restaurant, this experience is completely private for you to enjoy the traditional kintsugi process. This photography experience takes you front and backstage at an iconic tango show in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Hosted by a professional photographer, the activity starts with a 30-minute introductory talk in a San Telmo cafe where you'll learn about the camera settings and techniques required for shooting moving objects in low light. After this, you will walk a short distance to the theater where the rest of the evening plays out over photography, art, dining, and conversation.

Once seated at a premium table with a clear view of the stage, you will photograph the dancers and orchestra without obstructions. Dinner is served during the show, while Bernardo mentors you through the photography and shares cultural insights into tango culture. At a convenient moment, you will access the backstage area for the opportunity to meet and photograph the tango dancers while they prepare their make-up and costumes ahead the show.

This rare-access experience puts an immersive twist on the typical Buenos Aires tango show. Hosted by a globally published photographer from Buenos Aires, you will view this splendid performance from the perspective of an artist. The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Riad Living

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture.
