In a 3.5-hour tour in Alfama and Mouraria — two of Lisbon’s oldest areas, among the few spared by the 1755 quake — you walk through the urban layers of the city’s origins before Portugal existed as a kingdom. You start at the Roman Theatre, viewing the ruins at street level. Then you move through cobbled streets, hills, alleys, courtyards — shaped by medieval and pre-medieval planning — to experience the city’s history.

You see how Phoenician traces fade into Roman foundations, then Visigoths, Muslim urbanism, Jewish quarters, and Christian rule. Mouraria was named for the Moors and holds the memory of coexistence and marginalization. You climb to viewpoints, slip around key structures, and pause for coffee and pastry. This private ceramics experience invites you to create a mate drinking gourd from scratch. Over the course of 3.5 hours, you will learn about the entire process of modeling and decorating ceramics, culminating in a one-of-a-kind keepsake to take home and relive your time in Mendoza with every sip. While you shape and create your personalized gourd, you will sip on mate chosen by Lucila. Sharing mate (a caffeinated herbal beverage) is an integral component of Argentine culture and you'll come to understand why. Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience alongside her sister, Yessika. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu.

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

With its laid-back atmosphere and convenient amenities, Monolithos Beach is a great choice for families and travelers seeking tranquility.

Though his visit in 1969 was brief, Hendrix’s presence left a lasting mark on the area’s identity, blending the village’s laid-back atmosphere with a sense of rock ‘n’ roll mystique. Today, Diabat remains a peaceful retreat, known for its windswept beaches, local cafés, and rustic charm, drawing travelers and music lovers eager to connect with this slice of rock history.

The church's northern side houses the ancient Chapel delle Grazie and the library, while the southern side boasts the refectory with da Vinci's fresco and Montorfano's "The Crucifixion."

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.

2. The sunset experience here rivals that of Oia, but with far fewer crowds, making it a more tranquil and intimate spot to watch the day end. 
3. The lighthouse is a historic landmark, representing one of Greece’s oldest and most beautiful lighthouses, with its classic whitewashed design blending harmoniously with the rugged landscape. 
4. The surrounding cliffs and coastline create a dramatic backdrop, perfect for photography and quiet reflection. 
5. The area is easily accessible by car or scooter, and the short walk to the lighthouse offers lovely views along the way.

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Karaouine Mosque and University, one of the most significant religious and educational institutions in the Islamic world. Founded in 859 AD, it is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest continually operating university in the world. This architectural and spiritual masterpiece has long been a center of knowledge, attracting scholars from across the Muslim world. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, its stunning green-tiled roofs, intricate stucco work, and grand archways can be admired from various viewpoints in Fez’s medina.

1. The exquisite courtyard, adorned with delicate mosaics and marble fountains, reflects traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and serves as a peaceful retreat for worshippers and students.

2. The library, one of the oldest in the world, houses priceless manuscripts, including works by Avicenna and Ibn Khaldun, preserving centuries of knowledge and scholarship.

3. The mosque’s grand prayer hall, featuring endless rows of horseshoe arches and a striking mihrab, stands as a testament to classic Moorish and Andalusian design.

All my life, I called it |trom-sow|, but the locals insist on |troom-sa|. 

The drive through Andøya and Senja was so spectacular that we wanted to abandon our itinerary and stay on the islands overnight vs. driving into Tromsø. And then I would have missed a dramatic sunset/dawn. Everything - sky, sea, windows on buildings, Arctic Church, mountain tops - blazed fiery red for an hour before turning into several shades of blue, with bright pink thrown in for effect. It stayed like that all night long. 

The locals can’t seem to stop partying through Friday night all along Storgata, so the people-watching is riveting. We’ve got to sleep at some point, we kept telling each other.
