Morocco

This is a full-day guided trek through the High Atlas Mountains, starting and ending in the village of Imlil. Your journey begins with a gradual climb through Tamatert, a quiet mountain village with stone homes and terraced fields, before reaching the Tidli Plateau at 2,350 meters. This wide-open ridge offers stunning 360° views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, often with no one else in sight. The trail then continues to the Isk Summit at 2,500 meters, offering even more expansive vistas, including sights of Mount Toubkal. 

Afterward, the path continues downhill past terraced farmland and the peaceful Amadin Waterfall—an ideal spot to rest your legs and soak in the mountain air. You’ll then pass through the sleepy village of Achain before returning to Imlil by late afternoon. The trek takes around 5–6 hours at a moderate pace and is ideal for reasonably fit hikers looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path route filled with natural beauty and mountain hospitality.

Hiking to the rarely visited Tidli Plateau, a panoramic ridge with sweeping views of Mount Toubkal—a ridge offering panoramic views seldom seen by visitors, makes this special. Unlike the busier trails leading to the Toubkal summit, this path is peaceful and lesser-known—ideal for travelers who want to experience the rhythm of the mountains without the crowds. 

The trail is richly varied, from forested switchbacks to sunlit plateaus, cultivated fields and rushing streams. Your guide, deeply familiar with the land, will share insights into the area's traditions and the significance of local landmarks.

This private, exclusive evening unfolds entirely within the Palácio de Mateus — an iconic 18th century Baroque estate completed in 1743 and designated a National Monument in 1910. After public hours, you’ll enter through the main gate, when the palace and reflective pond lie silent. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”

Arguably the largest Mayan ruins on the continent, they're tucked away, deeply hidden in the Mexican jungle. The highlights of the actual ruins are the numerous temples, a palace and aqueducts, and of course, a guided tour where you can learn all about Mexico's history. If you venture out into the jungle, you'll encounter rare wildlife like monkeys, colorful birds, and giant snakes.

Take sunscreen, plenty of water, and some snacks, as the tour takes at least half a day.

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Look for candleholders donated by Risto Škuljević, a ship owner and philanthropist, and numerous other items of significant religious, historical, and artistic importance.

Church of St. Euphemia

Tanzania

"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

Sunrise Over the Mara

1. Lower Düden Waterfall, cascading 40 meters (131 feet) off a cliff into the Mediterranean, is best viewed from Düden Park or by taking a boat tour for an up-close experience.

Designed by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, this grand mosque complex combines elegance, spiritual serenity, and historical significance. San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.
