This is a moderately challenging private trek to the revered Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, starting from Imlil. This trek takes you through the traditional village of Aremd and ascends to 2350m (7710ft) at Sidi Chamarouch, positioned by a picturesque waterfall. 

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. This Experience is of medium difficulty and may, therefore, be unsuitable for young children. We strongly recommend hiring a mule that children can ride if tired. See “What to Bring” for details. 

The excursion begins in Imlil, about 1.5 hours by car from Marrakesh. If you’re staying in Marrakesh, Ourika, or similar, please arrange round-trip transportation with your hotel.

The Path to Sidi Chamarouch

This experience accommodates a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 participants to make base costs and logistics work. Included, besides the guiding, are: a freshly prepared picnic lunch at Sidi Chamarouch, bottled water, and all tips/gratuities for the guide and local businesses/families who support this venture so that you can have a “wallet-free” experience. Take your Japanese culinary experience to the next level in this workshop that allows you to participate in the preparation of a three-course, home-cooked meal. Far from the elaborate kaiseki meals that can be prepared only by chefs who have spent years honing their skills, Mami, a local chef and pâtissier, guides you in creating a simple yet heartfelt meal that you can learn to prepare in your own home using local, seasonal ingredients. The dishes include a vegetable dish, a fish dish, and a sushi; the actual ingredients will change with the seasons.

Set in a stylish century-old liquor shop, you’ll also enjoy several types of Japanese sake that will be paired with each course.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Naples, Italy, is home to the extraordinary Sansevero Chapel, a hidden gem of Baroque art and mystery, located in the heart of the historic center. This small yet breathtaking chapel is most famous for the Veiled Christ, a marble masterpiece by Giuseppe Sanmartino that astounds visitors with its delicate, lifelike depiction of Christ covered in a translucent shroud. Valencia, Spain, is home to Malvarrosa Beach, the city’s most famous urban beach, known for its golden sands, lively promenade, and refreshing Mediterranean waters. Located just a short distance from the city center, this wide and well-maintained beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood at the many restaurants along the shore. With its easy access, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning sunsets, Malvarrosa Beach offers a perfect seaside escape without leaving the city.

Since the 1960s, when icons like Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens frequented the city, Essaouira has blossomed into a hub for hippie culture and contemporary Moroccan art. Today, its winding medina streets are dotted with eclectic galleries, artisan workshops, and laid-back cafés, all infused with a relaxed, seaside vibe.

Art Galleries of Essaouira

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children. La Scala in Milan is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. It’s a symbol of cultural and historical opulence. Since its opening in 1778, it has been a hallowed ground for opera and ballet, drawing aficionados from around the world. What to look for when visiting:
1 - Since its commission by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, La Scala has been a focal point for Italian opera. Designed by Piermarini, it has premiered works of legendary composers like Bellini and Verdi, and hosted luminaries such as Nureyev and Callas. La Scala's inaugural performance in 1778 was marked by an incident where the chandelier crashed to the ground, fortunately without causing injuries. This dramatic start did not hinder its rise to prominence as a central figure in Milanese culture.

2 - The theater has undergone various renovations that improved acoustics and seating. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior of La Scala is a blend of neoclassical style and modern comforts, with the individual boxes once decorated according to the owner's tastes. The auditorium is adorned with plush red velvet and gilded accents.

3 - Renowned for its near-perfect acoustics, La Scala is a challenging yet prestigious stage for the world’s most talented performers. The acoustics are so fine-tuned that even the type of rope used backstage is chosen for its sound qualities. La Scala was also a pioneer in lighting technology, being the first building in Milan to have electric lights.

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

The historical Tavira, a captivating town in the Algarve region of Portugal, was one of the first Phoenician settlements in the Iberian West. Tavira's unique blend of historical influences, from its Moorish occupation to the Christian reconquest, has left a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Top 5 highlights:
- Tavira was a significant Moorish stronghold from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The town still reflects this era with its whitewashed buildings, distinctive Moorish-style doors, and rooftops. Visit the Tavira Castle, originally built by the Moors, and the historic Roman bridge, which was later determined to be a Moorish bridge from the 12th century.
- Discover the dramatic history of Tavira's reconquest in 1242 by Dom Paio Peres Correia. This pivotal event marked the town's transition from Moorish to Christian rule. Explore the Santa Maria do Castelo Church, built on the site of a former mosque, which now houses the tombs of Dom Paio and his knights.
- Learn about the devastating impact of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake on Tavira. The town, like much of the Algarve, was significantly damaged, leading to a rebuilding effort that resulted in many of the fine 18th-century buildings you see today.

Tavira's historic center is best explored on foot. The town's economy has shifted from fishing to tourism, but it has maintained its traditional charm, avoiding the high-rise development seen in other parts of the Algarve.
