Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border.

Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico.

Over the course of two hours, you’ll taste native grapes and forgotten appellations: from the bright, fruit-forward whites of Castelli Romani to the mineral-driven wines of Lake Bolsena’s volcanic soils. And then, the bold finale—Cesanese, the pride of Ciociaria, a red unlike any other in Italy.

This is a deep dive into Lazio’s land, traditions, and quiet excellence—led by experts who’ve been championing these wines long before they caught anyone’s attention.

Frank Villani is a certified sommelier whose passion for Italian wine sparked during his university years, leading him to complete his sommelier education in 2009. This experience welcomes you into the studio of Shannon McEvoy in Providencia, Santiago’s leafiest central district, for a two-hour private meet-and-greet with the artist.

Over light refreshments, you’ll hear how Shannon relocated from the United States to Chile and established herself as a muralist working between two cultures. She will share insights into her creative process and the techniques behind large-scale public artworks. Through an interactive presentation, you’ll explore some of her murals across Chile and beyond, gaining an understanding of how street art reflects cultural narratives and urban identities.

Inside her studio, you’ll view a curated selection of her works, from completed pieces to works in progress, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at an artist’s evolving practice. The session also provides an opportunity to discuss the role of public art in shaping communities and the inspirations that fuel her vibrant, large-scale creations.

This rare-access, behind-the-scenes experience takes place in the private studio of an artist whose work bridges the cultural landscapes of Chile and the United States. Shannon will share little-known stories about how she integrated into the local art scene and provide an overview of Chilean artistic traditions, from muralism to contemporary public art.

As an artistic director, Shannon collaborates with fellow muralists and actively champions the community aspect of street art. Originally from Minnesota, multimedia artist Shannon McEvoy studied in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. Inspired by the street art of Valparaíso, she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and later became a muralist herself.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—though her talents extend far beyond. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography. As an artistic director, she has overseen several monumental public art installations in Santiago and beyond.

Passionate about both art and language, Shannon sees them as powerful tools for self-expression and meaningful connection. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Argentina

Taste something a little different on this wine and tasting at one of the oldest wineries in Mendoza. While most pairings come with cheese and charcuterie, this estate in the Maipú Wine Region serves their wine with locally-made chocolates and alfajores. But before then, you’ll explore the grounds of this family-run winery on a slow, mindful walk. While exploring organic vineyards and old cellar doors, you’ll learn about simple traditions kept alive by this family of winemakers for generations. The wines here are made with minimal intervention, with a high minerality due to the characteristics of the soil and the organic viticultural practices.

This leads into the tasting of wines sweet delights: satiny chocolates and decadent alfajores that complement each varietal and bring out the flavours in unexpected ways. A thoroughly sensory experience, you’ll feel the silence of the cellar, the rough texture of the vines, and the kind of care that doesn’t come from machines—but from people.

There’s no glitz and no rush on this experience. This family behind this winery don’t follow trends; they follow their values and their hearts. Hosted by Julieta, you’ll meander through the vines with a guide with the estate who will explain how the estate does things differently. Born and raised in Mendoza, Julieta offers an insider’s perspective on Argentina's premium wine region through engaging conversations and unique experiences. After spending years guiding throughout Argentina and Chile, she has returned to her home city with a vision to show a different side to Mendoza. Julieta's experiences mix a keen knowledge of wine, gastronomy, and cultural history with spontaneity and humor. 

Just outside Oaxaca city is a community called San Andres Huayapam, that is famed as the birthplace of tejate. This thoughtfully curated experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with this tradition firsthand. You’ll explore the area where it was founded, peruse local murals, plus meet a traditional tejatera who will explain the process, ingredients and the history of this nutritious drink.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. An especially popular destination for Oaxacans on weekends, many travel here to sample tejate, visit nearby lakes, and enjoy gourmet fare in family-run restaurants. It’s an authentic window into everyday life in this stunning region of southern Mexico.

Embark on a captivating hiking journey through the remnants of Ancient Noto, a city frozen in time with its city walls, gates, castles, towers, humble houses, and grand palaces all crafted from the white limestone of the Iblei. Despite flourishing vegetation and three centuries of neglect, the site emanates a fairytale allure, bearing witness to its prehistoric origins until the catastrophic earthquake of 1693 led to its abandonment and subsequent relocation. Descending towards the Cava del Carosello canyon, the hiking route unveils ancient caves transformed into rock tanneries and mills amidst lakes and streams. The magnificent quarry, cradling the vital Asinaro River, reveals over 50 active rock tanneries dating back to the 1400s, alongside exceptional biodiversity. Participants have the opportunity to swim in the Asinaro River and discover the natural plunge pool, Urvu.

The Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, spans the deep El Tajo Gorge, offering breathtaking views, while the Ronda Bullring, one of the oldest and most historic in Spain, is a testament to the town’s deep-rooted connection to bullfighting.

Puente Nuevo & Ronda Bullring

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

The Spanish Steps, gracefully ascending from Piazza di Spagna to Trinità dei Monti church, are a cultural symbol of Rome. 5 - Trinità dei Monti Church: At the top of the steps, the Trinità dei Monti church, with its twin bell towers, offers a serene escape from the city’s hustle. The church’s interior, though less ornate than other Roman churches, exudes a peaceful charm, complementing the lively atmosphere of the steps.

Croatia

Istria, Croatia, is home to the enchanting Grožnjan Artists’ Village, a medieval hilltop town transformed into a vibrant hub for painters, sculptors, and musicians. Known as the “Town of Artists,” Grožnjan is filled with cobbled streets, stone houses, and breathtaking views of the Mirna River Valley, making it one of the most picturesque spots in Istria. With its numerous art galleries, charming cafés, and lively summer music festivals, this hidden gem offers a magical blend of history, creativity, and inspiration.

Grožnjan Artists’ Village

Yves Saint Laurent gifted Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him and his partner in the 60s. They bought an electric-blue villa and its garden, preserved the vision of its original owner (landscape painter Jacques Majorelle), and opened it to the public. 

What makes this feel like a psychedelic mirage in the desert?

Hot pink bougainvillea bursting from terracotta planters. Architectural cacti in lemon-yellow planters. Bamboos growing against cobalt-blue walls. Colorful birds flitting through palm trees. Saint Laurent’s gorgeous collection of Moroccan art, that I totally covet. 

It also has a museum that features jewelry in a setting that our guide Khadija keeps referring to as “a dream”. A dark room with a star-spangled ceiling and low voltage spotlights shining on stunning jewelry sets.

Khadija’s right. Please let all my dreams be like this place.
