Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Peru

Milagro Campos Llontop, Mila, is a Lima-based cultural guide, artist, and educator with over ten years of experience in heritage interpretation and socially responsible tourism. She studied Drawing and Painting at the National School of Fine Arts of Lima and holds a specialization in Sustainable Tourism.

She has worked at several museums and archaeological sites across Lima as a local guide and educational program designer and is one of the few official tour guides in the city specializing in Indigenous Folk Art. In 2022, Mila founded an Indigenous art experience project in collaboration with master women artisans from the Shipibo-Konibo Amazonian community based in Lima. Working directly with the president of the community, the project supports cultural revitalization and generates direct economic income for more than 200 master women artisans.

Your journey begins in Chioggia aboard a topa — a traditional flat-bottomed boat restored by your host, Damiano. Known as “Little Venice,” Chioggia has long lived in the shadow of its famous neighbor — but with its own traditions and tempo. As you glide down Canal Vena and under low bridges, daily life in the lagoon unfolds from a water-level view: fishermen docking, laundry hanging above the canals, neighbors chatting across boats. Damiano, who lives here, shares the rhythm of his hometown and points out the markers of its past and present.

From Chioggia, the topa crosses open water toward Pellestrina. Mussel farms stretch out across the lagoon; wooden stilt houses rise above the tide. Pellestrina sits on one of the barrier islands that protect the lagoon from the Adriatic — a working village shaped by water, with a low skyline and painted facades that glow under the sun. The return route traces slower canals with wide lagoon views.

Along the way, Fleur provides broader background, outlining how tagging and graffiti first appeared, how they evolved into street art, and how cities negotiate this form of artistic movement today — between regulation, preservation, and erasure. Drawing on her long-term documentation of Bordeaux’s street art scene and on conversations with local artists, she shares insight into creative process, artistic intention, and how each piece interacts with its surroundings.

Bordeaux is most often framed through eighteenth-century façades and wine estates. This walk shifts attention to a more contemporary artistic expression, bringing attention to voices and ideas rarely included in its public image.

Fleur’s perspective is shaped by years of focused work blogging about and documenting street artists active in Bordeaux. Through direct encounters and interviews, she has explored their themes, working methods, and intentions. This allows her to present the works as deliberate interventions — shaped by specific individuals responding to specific moments.

Because street art is ephemeral, the route reflects what is visible now. Works may fade, be painted over, or replaced. That impermanence becomes part of the experience. The walk offers a way to understand Bordeaux through what is directly being expressed on its surfaces — voices that rarely appear in guidebooks, yet actively participate in the city’s public conversation.

You’ll meet Fleur on Rue de la Rousselle 77.

After more than ten years in London, Fleur Borde returned to Bordeaux in 2011 and began reshaping her professional path around what she knows and loves most: the Gironde, its landscapes, and its wine culture.

She became an independent guide in 2018 and earned her official guiding license in 2023. Alongside her guiding work, she holds a WSET Level 3 certification, grounding her wine expertise firmly in the Bordeaux region.

Fleur designs and leads experiences that help travelers understand Bordeaux and the Gironde beyond their labels—through walks, encounters, and carefully considered routes. Her approach is driven by curiosity, firsthand knowledge, and a sustained commitment to sharing the region with clarity and depth.

Located just outside Cusco's city centre, this half-day experience takes you on a circuit of Saqsaywaman (Sacsayhuamán), Qenqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay, hosted by a local archaeologist. Delsi has worked on Saqsaywaman, and she recounts its legacy through first-hand stories, recent discoveries, and the latest theories behind its construction.

Each of these sites reveals a different facet of Inca civilization. Saqsaywaman, the great zigzag fortress on the hill above the city, forms the head of the puma whose shape Cusco's old urban layout was built to trace. Qenqo's carved underground passages were used in Inca ceremonies. Puka Pukara, a small hilltop checkpoint, watched the road into Cusco. Also visited is Tambomachay — a sacred water temple with engineered waterfall.

After the experience, you'll have lunch with Delsi at a local restaurant close to Cusco's historic center before being dropped back at your accommodation.

Saqsaywaman took 80 years to build, beginning in the mid-1400s. These zigzagging walls with blocks weighing over 100 tons fit so precisely that you can't even slide a knife between them. And the zigzag in Inca cosmology represents the teeth of the puma, the sacred animal whose form Cusco was shaped to mirror. Walked together with Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay the sites reveal a civilization whose engineering, customs and rituals still draw scholars to study how it was done.

How the Inca cut, moved and set those stones is still being studied. So is the question of what the site was for: fortress, ceremonial center or observatory. Having worked as a professional archaeologist at Saqsaywaman, she interprets the stones — noticing the alignments, sections left unfinished, and small details a typical visitor walks past. You talk about what the carvings might have meant and how daily life was organized. These open questions are part of what makes walking the site with Delsi special.

Delsi Espinoza is a local, fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco. She has more than 15 years of experience working in the Cusco region on various official projects in a variety of locations. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks, including Machu Picchu, Saqsaywaman (Sacsayhuamán), Pikillaqta, and Urubamba, amongst others. She has led excavation projects, maintenance programs, and education initiatives in the region since graduating as an archaeologist from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014.

Spain

This experience begins in Sacromonte, the hillside district where the cave-dwellings of Granada’s Roma community shaped a culture found nowhere else in Spain. With Gabriela, you walk through this historic neighborhood and visit the Cave Museum, stepping inside reconstructed cave-homes that show how people lived, cooked, forged iron, wove baskets.

From the terraces, you see an iconic golden view of the Alhambra. Gabriela shares stories about the origins of the Roma community here, their role in Granada’s culture, and how Sacromonte became the cradle of the zambra, a flamenco style born in these caves.

The evening continues in the city center with an intimate flamenco show performed in a small tablao, where the focus is on artistry. Here, you witness the expressive singing, guitar and dance that define Granada’s identity.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
