Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border.

Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico.

Rocío is a graphic designer who has managed communications projects for a range of institutions, including government agencies and nonprofits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She loves sharing the diversity and richness of the region through visual storytelling.

Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

This avifauna safari is designed exclusively for birders, ornithophiles, and twitchers at all stages on their mission to encounter the world's rarest and most unique species. While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. This is also a hotspot for puna plovers and Andean avocets. Visiting quieter canyons and wetlands allows for a mindful connection with birds and studying their behaviors.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Her expertise lies in the region's natural history, from its intricate geology and flora to fascinating wildlife and, in particular, its avifauna. This is enhanced by her active participation in local conservation and environmental education projects. 

Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. From there, the path opens into olive groves that stretch across the slopes beneath Mount Psiloritis — known in antiquity as Mount Ida and associated in myth with the birth of Zeus. You continue through the Margarites valley, crossing a Hellenistic bridge and passing farmland still in cultivation. Semi-abandoned hamlets stand beside active fields, revealing how rural life has shifted rather than disappeared.

This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. Make sure to arrive early on the island and calculate the time needed to get back to the port before the last ferry departs back to Trapani (in summer it is usually around 8 PM).

Favignana Beach Hopping

Jamaica

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

Music in the Air

Tarragona, located along Catalonia’s coast, is a city steeped in history and known for its Roman heritage. From well-preserved ruins to medieval alleyways, it offers a fascinating journey through time combined with beautiful seaside views.

Morocco

Nestled between the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara, Agdz is a small yet historically rich town that serves as the gateway to the stunning Draa Valley. Tips for Visiting: 

The best time to visit is October to April, when temperatures are cooler and the valley is at its most vibrant. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for reaching remote areas, and packing a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water is essential for outdoor activities. Staying in a traditional kasbah guesthouse offers an immersive experience, while a camera is a must to capture the stunning palm groves, kasbahs, and desert landscapes.

The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.

Seville Cathedral is a magnificent testament to Gothic architecture and religious devotion. This colossal structure, enriched with history and art, is famed for being the largest Gothic cathedral in the world.
