Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Guided by Hands That See 

This experience accommodates a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 people. What’s Included: Transportation from Oaxaca de Juárez to this Zapotec community and back again. A guided visit to the home workshop of a family of artisans. Lunch and agua fresca at a local comedor that is en route back to Centro. 

We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, water and your camera or phone, if you'd like to take photos. If you wish to buy pieces from the makers while in their studio, they accept credit cards, but cash pesos is always preferred. That said, there's no expectation to buy anything outside of what's included in the experience.

Pick up and drop off will be at the front of the Italian Coffee Company at Lic Manuel Ruiz 300A, Reforma, 68050, Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Your host will be there waiting for you 15 minutes before the departure time to enable a prompt departure at the time stated on the booking. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. This is a day-long journey into the trade life of Istanbul—told through its markets, caravan inns, and shared meals. This walking tour crosses from the old merchant quarters of the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar to the everyday rhythms of Kadıköy, weaving through Ottoman courtyards, the "hans", and backstreet cafés along the way. You’ll visit a working caravanserai, meet a craftsperson keeping old trades alive, see rare views of the city from various points, and sit down to the same dishes traders still eat today—sour soups, lentil köfte, helva, mussels, meze. You’ll walk through wholesale alleys behind the Spice Bazaar and visit the Süleymaniye complex—once a spiritual and logistical nerve center of the empire. Then you’ll cross the Bosphorus by ferry, stepping into the present-day hum of market life on the Asian side. Grand Bazaar Behind-the-Scenes

Enter the Spice Bazaar, still thick with scent and sound since 1660. Walk beneath its vaulted ceilings lined with saffron, sumac, and dried hibiscus sold by families who've worked the same stalls for generations. From there, slip behind the scenes into Tahtakale—one of Istanbul’s least understood but most vital trade arteries. This wholesale district still hums with activity: dried goods in sacks, hardware stacked in back alleys, and passageways filled with carts and crates. Spices and Side Streets

Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Pause in the courtyard to take in panoramic views of the Golden Horn, then, if time allows, sit for helva and tea at a nearby terrace café still frequented by porters and theology students.

Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. Your guide will explain how this is also a working model of Ottoman urban design. This is a 3-hour cooking experience at the Amal Women’s Cooperative Center, founded by the remarkable Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen. Rooted in empowerment and inclusion, the experience offers a hands-on introduction to Moroccan cuisine while celebrating the social impact of food.

You’ll begin with a short introduction to Amal’s mission—supporting women from vulnerable backgrounds by training them in the culinary arts. From there, you’ll dive into Moroccan cooking: exploring local spices, learning the stories of each dish, and preparing a traditional feast with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some recipes are cooked over charcoal, using bellows to control the flame—an immersive detail that reflects Morocco’s culinary heritage.

As your dishes simmer, you'll enjoy a traditional tea paired with homemade cookies. The experience ends with a shared meal; you’ll gather to taste what you've created and connect with members of the Amal team, learning more about their lives, resilience and work.

Unlike many cooking classes in Marrakesh, this experience is private, intimate and timed for an early dinner, featuring a selection of thoughtfully curated dishes to prepare and enjoy. It’s also intentionally designed to support a social mission: a portion of your fee goes directly to Amal Center, a nonprofit that provides training and job opportunities for women from vulnerable backgrounds.

Amal is more than a cooking school—it’s a space of transformation, offering hope and vocational skills to women rebuilding their lives. Under the guidance of the team Nora has created and trained, you’ll learn to make Moroccan classics like tajine, couscous or pastilla—while gaining insight into the flavors, techniques, and cultural meaning behind each dish. This is a blend of culinary depth, cultural immersion, and social impact.

We start by learning the different spices that go into Moroccan cuisine.
Then we get to work! After we do the basic prep of our dishes, we put them on charcoal to cook and use the bellows to make sure the fire is hot.
Once our fires are going nicely, we sit and enjoy a tea ceremony, where the hosts will talk about Amal Center, it's special mission to empower women, as well as any and all questions guests may have about Morocco in general.

Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Travelers are interested in how we live, how we spend the day, what we do.” This itinerary is João’s answer to that challenge: an immersive route where nature, food, craft, and memory guide the pace.

Salta’s old town center has rich history and a living folk culture. Colonial facades, neo-classical architecture, church with bell tower and crowds of happy people meeting up with friends before dinner.

My night ends at a peña (music/social club) where local musicians perform songs and the audience sings and dances along.

There’s the chacarera, a lively partner dance with much stomping. During zamba, couples circle each other, waving white handkerchiefs. Finally in the cherished malambo, a male gaucho performs his best steps to show off his strength and boldness to upstage other competitors. Then the dancers go around the room looking for partners from among the audience, and it’s fascinating to see the eagerness of the crowd to join in.

There’s a lot of Fernet-and-Coke - or the local Torrontés - on the tables to go along, and soon everyone is singing to the chorus. Their spirit is infectious.
