The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Cagliari’s Historic Center, the heart of Sardinia’s capital, is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and stunning views. Known as Castello, this hilltop district dates back to medieval times and is home to centuries-old architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Cagliari. Packed with historic landmarks, lively squares, and charming cafes, the historic center offers a glimpse into Sardinia’s rich past while remaining a bustling part of the modern city. 
1. The Bastione di Saint Remy, with its grand staircase and terrace, offers breathtaking views of the city, the port, and the surrounding area, especially magical at sunset. 
2. The Cagliari Cathedral, a stunning Romanesque-Gothic structure, is a must-see for its ornate interior and crypts, housing relics of Sardinian martyrs. 
3. The Torre dell’Elefante and Torre di San Pancrazio, medieval towers that once defended the city, provide incredible views and insight into Cagliari’s fortifications. 
4. Wander through the Piazza Palazzo, where historic buildings like the Archbishop’s Palace and the Royal Palace reflect the city’s political and religious history. 
5. The district’s narrow streets and alleys, lined with colorful houses, artisan shops, and traditional trattorias, make exploring on foot a delight. 
Visitor Tip: Allow 2–3 hours to explore the historic center. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets and steep climbs, and visit in the late afternoon to enjoy cooler weather and evening lights.

Cagliari’s Historic Center

Namibia

I am in Kaokoland. Final frontier of Namibia. Home to the beautiful Himba people.

The last nomadic, herding tribe in southern Africa, they still maintain their dress and traditions. Red ochre paste for sun protection. Smoke from herbs for cleansing and perfume. Intricate hairstyles. Lots of leather jewelry. A beauty routine that takes three hours every single day to complete.

This young woman graciously agrees to be my ‘model’ - and is as curious about me and my traditions as I am about hers.

Land of Himba

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Vineyards and boozy tours

Colombia

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Turia Gardens (Jardín del Turia), a lush, 9-kilometer-long green space that winds through the heart of the city. Once the riverbed of the diverted Turia River, this sprawling urban park is now one of Spain’s largest city parks, featuring walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, fountains, and iconic landmarks like the City of Arts and Sciences. 5. The former riverbed’s many historic bridges, such as the Puente del Mar and Puente de las Flores, provide a glimpse into Valencia’s past while offering beautiful viewpoints.

Visitor Tip: Rent a bike to explore the full length of the park, and visit in the late afternoon to enjoy cooler temperatures and golden-hour photography opportunities.

Turia Gardens

Portugal’s Fluviário de Mora, located in the heart of the Alentejo region, is a unique freshwater aquarium dedicated to the rivers and aquatic ecosystems of Portugal and beyond. The Lisbon Botanical Garden, located in the heart of the city near the National Museum of Natural History and Science, is a lush, tranquil oasis filled with exotic plants, towering palms, and unique flora from around the world. Established in 1878, this garden originally served as a research space for the study of botanical species and remains an impressive representation of Portuguese dedication to scientific knowledge and environmental beauty. Visitors can stroll through a maze of pathways shaded by old trees, enjoying an escape from Lisbon’s urban hustle while uncovering diverse plant species collected from former Portuguese colonies across Africa, Asia, and South America.

The Lisbon Botanical Garden

Mexico

Oaxaca is the most diverse state in Mexico, with the richest history of indigenous peoples and consequently the most fascinating and vibrant folk art in the country. In Oaxaca are so many different indigenous groups spread across numerous villages, and each of them is known for their unique works of art, from rugs to pottery, flowers, and paintings.

Street art in Oaxaca tells stories about Mexico, their struggles for independence and economic development, and against military dictatorship and US American influence. You can learn a lot from indigenous rights to natural disasters through street art in Oaxaca by walking through the streets and analyzing each mural.
