Begin at the Imperial Palace East Gardens, where Edo Castle once stood. Then move to Asakusa, home to Tokyo’s oldest temple and cultural heart of the Edo period. In Ueno, Japan’s early public parks and Western architecture reflect the ambitions of the Meiji era. Yanaka offers something rare: a residential Tokyo that survived both war and redevelopment. Your day begins where power once concentrated: the grounds of Edo Castle, now part of the Imperial Palace East Gardens. This was the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. As you walk past stone foundations, reconstructed gates, and broad moats, your guide introduces you to the fascinating story of Edo — how a small fishing village became the political center of Japan.

The gardens, paths and walls are part of the city’s origin story. The Ninomaru Garden, restored in classical style, contrasts with the modern skyline just beyond the trees. You’ll also learn how the transition from Edo to Tokyo began right here, when power shifted from shoguns to emperors.

This segment of the tour begins at Kaminarimon, the Thunder Gate, with its massive red lantern and statues of protective gods. You’ll walk down Nakamise-dori, a shopping street that has served pilgrims for centuries, before arriving at the main temple complex.

You’ll walk past key markers of Japan's modernization: the European-style National Museum buildings, wide boulevards meant for public gathering, and lingering shrines that resisted the push toward the new. Your guide will explain how this district became a showcase for Meiji ideals: education, public space, and blending tradition with imported forms. After the formal landmarks of Ueno, you turn into the backstreets of Yanaka — one of the few neighborhoods in Tokyo that escaped the firebombing of World War II and the redevelopment that followed. The streets here are narrow, quiet, and residential, with shopfronts that haven’t changed in decades. 

You’ll begin with lunch at a local restaurant/cafe, chosen for its connection to the neighborhood. Then take a slow walk through the area: passing family-run stores, neighborhood shrines, and traditional homes. Your guide will introduce you to  daily life here, and how this district became a living archive of pre-war Tokyo — not through preservation but continuity.

Now you're in the Taisho / Eatly Showa period. Yanaka offers a rare sense of what the city looked and felt like before the skyline rose. You’ll see how small temples sit tucked between houses, how cats lounge outside old bookstores, how the same shops have served the same community for generations. Your guide will explain how this area has resisted the forces that reshaped the rest of the city — and what that says about Tokyo’s layered identity. Lunch is part of the story.

You'll begin with a view from the observation deck. Then your guide will lead you on a walk along the Sumida River promenade, where wooden boats once carried goods into the heart of Edo. Mexico

Just outside Oaxaca city is a community called San Andres Huayapam, that is famed as the birthplace of tejate. This thoughtfully curated experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with this tradition firsthand. You’ll explore the area where it was founded, peruse local murals, plus meet a traditional tejatera who will explain the process, ingredients and the history of this nutritious drink.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. An especially popular destination for Oaxacans on weekends, many travel here to sample tejate, visit nearby lakes, and enjoy gourmet fare in family-run restaurants. It’s an authentic window into everyday life in this stunning region of southern Mexico.

This Spanish celebration for the Holy Week dates to the 16th century, and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn Catholic processions wind through narrow streets, organized by around 70 of Seville's church brotherhoods, featuring floats adorned with intricate statues of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and scenes from the Passion of Christ known as misterios. In Seville, it was tradition to enjoy these festivities from privileged private balconies owned by local families, offering a splendid vantage point. A local Seville "ambassador" will provide insights into the traditions, history, and significance of Semana Santa. Immerse yourself in this captivating spectacle for about 90 minutes to observe one or two processions.

The Semana Santa processions have grand pasos, or floats, intricately depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.
