Next, we will explore Rua do Século, a charming street renowned for its stunning Portuguese architecture. As we stroll along, we will have the opportunity to pass by the picturesque Convento dos Cardaes. Our next stop will be Rua Portiais de São Bento, a vibrant street teeming with charming local shops and a bustling atmosphere of creative energy, making it a true melting pot of artistic expression. While navigating this narrow street, we'll have the perfect opportunity to capture stunning photos of the iconic Tram 28. Following that, we will visit the Green Street in Santos. Argentina

Hosted by a professional photographer from Buenos Aires, this tango photography experience takes place in the vibrant neighborhood of La Boca. Playing out on the pedestrianized street of Caminito, you will meet two professional and award winning tango dancers before capturing incredible images of them performing to the backdrop of the colorful, mismatched tenement houses La Boca is famed for. Sporting full costume and make-up, the dancers are happy to answer any questions you have about this art form. 

The experience starts over a cup of coffee in a cafe where Bernardo will discuss the best camera settings for capturing tango on the street. He will address compositional tips, focusing techniques, and working with moving subjects. This is an opportunity to ask any questions and get to grips with the functionality of your camera or device (smartphones are welcome). As the activity progresses, he will continue to impart knowledge and mentor you throughout.

If you’re the kind of traveler who feels shy about photographing people on the street, then this experience takes care of that. Hosted by a professional Porteño photographer whose work appears in publications all over the world, you will partake in a private photography session with two tango dancers in La Boca. This dancing duo will be dressed in full costume and make-up and you will have the opportunity to chat before and during the experience—providing a rare access moment to learn about this art form from those who practice it and take a closer look at the fashion.The setting itself couldn't be more appropriate. After all, La Boca is one of the barrios of Buenos Aires where tango found its feet in the 19th century. 

Bernardo will art direct the shoot, indicating where and how the dancers should pose while at the same time assisting you with your camera settings and composition. All you need to worry about is taking compelling photos and feeling the rhythm!

Venice’s history is inseparable from its bond with the water that surrounds it. This experience begins where the lagoon meets the entrance of the Grand Canal, reading the skyline of San Giorgio and Punta della Dogana as a way into the city’s past.

The navigation continues around Punta della Dogana and the Basilica della Salute, following lines that reveal stories of commerce, devotion and resilience. From here the route moves toward islands that marked important moments in the life of the Republic. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children. The mezzanine level houses the Loeser Collection, and the second floor features private apartments and chambers, including the original Hall of Priors and the Hall of Maps. Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Karaouine Mosque and University, one of the most significant religious and educational institutions in the Islamic world. Founded in 859 AD, it is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest continually operating university in the world. This architectural and spiritual masterpiece has long been a center of knowledge, attracting scholars from across the Muslim world. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, its stunning green-tiled roofs, intricate stucco work, and grand archways can be admired from various viewpoints in Fez’s medina.

1. The exquisite courtyard, adorned with delicate mosaics and marble fountains, reflects traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and serves as a peaceful retreat for worshippers and students.

2. The library, one of the oldest in the world, houses priceless manuscripts, including works by Avicenna and Ibn Khaldun, preserving centuries of knowledge and scholarship.

Karaouine Mosque

The ancient city of Pompeii is one of the most fascinating and well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. Buried under volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii offers an unparalleled glimpse into daily life in a Roman city nearly 2,000 years ago. The volcanic ash remarkably preserved buildings, frescoes, mosaics, and even the casts of residents, allowing visitors to walk through the streets and experience the grandeur and tragedy of this once-thriving city.
 Highlights of Pompeii:
1. Visit the Forum, which was the social, political, and economic center of Pompeii, where people gathered for public speeches, markets, and religious activities. Surrounded by temples and public buildings, it offers incredible views of Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

2. Just outside the main city, this villa contains some of the best-preserved frescoes in all of Pompeii, particularly the vivid depictions of mysterious initiation rites, believed to be associated with the cult of Dionysus.

My taxi driver, Chand, tries his best to persuade me to change the plan - “K.R. Market is a complete mess in the rainy season”, he argues, and for effect, twists his head around to the back seat to look at my tunic, shakes his head, and declares woefully — “You will be covered in mud and smelly water”. Sadly for him, I can’t resist a wholesale flower market. 

At sunrise every day, the southern end of Avenue Road lines up with a couple hundred flower vendors. Business between 5 to 8 a.m. is hectic and noisy.. Since it’s well past 10 a.m. now, I weave my way instead through stalls of vegetables, fruits and spices to find the building where these vendors disappear to after their morning sales. 

Chand is right about the mulch smells and slushy floors.  Climb up to the second floor to find a quiet spot to view the action from above. Or wander through the narrow passages, as I do, stepping around baskets full of flowers. 

For the record, my tunic remains mud-and-slush-free.
