Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Greece

Step aboard a boat in Porto Lagos and enter Lake Vistonida and its lagoon within Nestos National Park, one of Greece’s most spectacular wetlands. You move across a protected sanctuary where over 260 bird species appear across the year. Dalmatian pelicans, white-headed ducks, herons, flamingos, spoonbills, and kingfishers can be seen across the seasons.

The boat moves through channels and open stretches of this protected landscape, where birds gather and feed. You’ll pass colonies of herons and cormorants. Meet Pierre in the heart of Bordeaux in his studio next to Saint Michel church. Over coffee or tea paired with chocolatines and croissants, Pierre will share stories from his daily life and explain how his studio fits into this historic and lively area.

You’ll explore the origins of photography and learn about wet plate collodion—a 19th-century technique that uses glass or metal plates, chemical baths, and a large format camera. Pierre will demonstrate each step while coating, sensitizing, exposing, and developing images.

Watching your portrait come to life is a striking visual moment: deep contrasts, delicate textures, and a vintage feel that’s hard to find elsewhere. While your image slowly appears, Pierre shares family stories and his personal view of Bordeaux and photography. If the light conditions are good, you can choose to shoot outdoors and include a glimpse of the city in your portrait.

The uniqueness of this experience lies in the physicality of the process and the one-of-a-kind result. Wet plate collodion photography doesn’t aim to imitate the past—it uses an early technique to craft images that are singular, dense, and deeply present. Pierre Wetzel is a Bordeaux-based photographer known for his dedication to wet plate collodion, a 19th-century photographic process that he has mastered over years of experimentation. He lives and works in the Saint-Michel district, where he runs his studio and regularly collaborates on community-based art projects that connect photography with local stories and social engagement.

You begin at National Museum of Anthropology, one of the world’s most remarkable cultural institutions. Beneath its vast courtyard “paraguas” canopy — a concrete umbrella supported by a single column — you walk through galleries that hold Mexico’s ancient imagination and Indigenous legacy: Mexica calendar stone, Zapotec urns, Mayan reliefs.

The building itself is an icon of modern Mexican architecture — a vast courtyard shaded by a monumental concrete “umbrella,” its single central column carved with mythic reliefs.

Inside, you move through galleries that feel like time slowed down. Among the most famous pieces are the Aztec Sun Stone, a massive calendar disk that encodes the Aztec cosmos, and the colossal Olmec heads carved from basalt. Anthropology Museum

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Perched high above the city, the castle commands sweeping views of the valley and stands as a symbol of Mexico’s layered history. Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, where rooms are preserved with 19th-century furnishings, imperial artifacts, and murals tracing the country’s struggle for independence and revolution.

Highlights include Maximilian’s ornate chambers, the Hall of Battles, and murals by Diego Rivera and other great Mexican artists. From the terraces, weather/visibility permitting, you can see the city stretching below — green canopy to skyline.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Dario Moreno Street & Asansör

Barcelona, Spain, is home to the Picasso Museum, one of the most significant collections dedicated to the life and work of Pablo Picasso. Picasso Museum Barcelona

The Moroccan fig liquor is beginning to sneak up on me. Or perhaps it’s the jet lag. The soulful music of the live folk vocalist is not helping either. 

We’re waiting for dinner, in the courtyard of a restored Riad. It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten much during the flight because very soon, it’s clear that they expect me to have the appetite of a small army. 

The food is absolutely delicious, and here’s what I learn:
“Salad” is a selection of 5-10 amazing dips served with khobz - flatbread. 
Pigeon pastille is a must-have any time you see it on a menu!
Tagine of lamb with fluffy couscous - when cooked to perfection as it is here - is irresistible. 

This is followed by an elaborate dessert course, mint tea prepared with precision and ceremony, gnawa singers and a belly dancer who insists on audience participation. 

This story celebrates a series of unforgettable meals in Marrakesh - some in fine restaurants and others on the street.

Of Pigeon Pastille

Located in Catalonia’s Priorat wine region, Falset is a charming medieval town renowned for its wine culture, historic architecture, and scenic vineyards. Surrounded by rolling hills and terraced vineyards, this small town offers a perfect blend of history, gastronomy, and natural beauty. It’s an essential stop for wine enthusiasts eager to taste some of Spain’s finest DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant wines, as well as for travelers seeking a relaxing, authentic Catalan experience.


1. Wine Tourism: Visit renowned wineries like Celler de Capçanes and Clos Mogador for tours and tastings of Garnacha and Cariñena wines, famous for their rich, full-bodied character.

Echoes & Views: Merenid Tombs

Staying at the Inn at Death Valley, we thought we would be able to get up just before sunrise and make a dash over to Zabriskie Point. In hind sight, we should have woken up a good 60 minutes earlier, since the viewpoint was packed with people as we got there. 


The stunning views of the badlands slowly fill up with yellow, orange, purple and brown colors - and every hue in between - as the sun comes up, totally makes up for the early rise. Once the sun has finished painting the badlands, it reaches out to color in the Panamint Range across the valley with gorgeous pinks and purples. If you want to avoid the crowds, do the 2.5 mile Badlands Loop hike. Right after the walk, you can drive the short 3 mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon loop drive before returning to Stovepipe Wells for breakfast. 

We had been told that the Death Valley National Park is all about extremes - and the Zabriskie Point is a visual representation of that.

Painting with Light

Filopappou Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, is a serene and historic green space in Athens offering stunning views of the Acropolis and the city below. Rich in natural beauty and archaeological significance, the hill has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Filopappou Hill

Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia, is home to Mount Srđ, a scenic hill rising 412 meters (1,352 feet) above the city, offering panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the Adriatic Sea, and the Elaphiti Islands. A historically significant site, Mount Srđ played a crucial role during the Siege of Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence and is now home to the Homeland War Museum. Whether you hike up, take the cable car, or drive, reaching the summit is a rewarding experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

1. At the summit, breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops and the deep blue Adriatic Sea make this one of the best photography spots in Croatia, especially at sunset.

2. The Dubrovnik Cable Car, a quick and scenic way to reach the top, offers stunning aerial views of the coastline and nearby islands on the way up.
