Inside, thick stone walls embrace rooms filled with solid wood furniture, faded family portraits, and the scent of time. A small display of traditional winemaking tools tells another story—the press, the granite grinder, the wooden vat.

Here, you’ll taste two of Luca’s wines made from Cannonau and Granatza grapes, paired with local cheese and cured meats. As you sip, he shares family memories and village tales, tracing the bond between his roots and this land.

Luca Gungui is a winemaker and native of Mamoiada, a small village in the heart of Sardinia where wine is a family tradition and a way of life. He represents the third generation of a lineage rooted in this land, where viticulture is passed down like a story. After years of working in communication, Luca chose to return to his origins and dedicate himself fully to wine, blending modern sensibility with deep respect for ancestral knowledge.

He produces his wines from native Sardinian varieties grown in high-altitude vineyards between 500 and 850 meters above sea level. His work is guided by the belief that each bottle can carry the memory of the people, places, and traditions that shaped it. Hosting guests in his family’s 19th-century home, he shares not only wine, but a living connection to Mamoiada’s soul.

It’s a walk through Coyoacán—guided by two locals who know its streets, stories, and bakeries by heart.

As you walk through Coyoacán, you’ll stop at some of its best-loved bakeries, and cafés, sampling a mix of classic and contemporary Mexican pastries. Along the way, Marie and Manuel—both professional photographers—will help you navigate menus, share stories from the neighborhood, and capture your time together in portrait-style candid photos that feel natural and alive.

Coyoacán is known for its colonial architecture, bright colors, and village-like charm. You'll pass tree-lined plazas, street vendors, and art-filled corners where history and daily life meet. After the tour, you will receive a curated digital gallery of your time in Coyoacán, so the memories stay for a long time. 

Coyoacán means “place of coyotes” in Nahuatl, and it’s long been one of Mexico City’s most distinct districts—first as an Aztec outpost, then a colonial center, and later the home of artists and writers like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Octavio Paz. Today, it’s a neighborhood where color, flavor, and history live side by side.

Marie and Manuel will take you to their favorite local cafés and bakeries—some traditional, some experimental—where the menu reflects Mexico’s evolving palate: matcha conchas, smoked vanilla pastries, freshly ground chocolate, local fruit compotes. Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. Simone, a graduate in Natural Sciences with a specialization in Environmental and Land Management, has been a trekking guide in Sardinia since 2013. The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Majestic Heart of Mafra

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. It beautifully combines nature, agriculture, and gardening. The forest and gardens span over eight hectares, offering shady corners, waterfalls, and even a unique vegetable garden—Horta dos Frades—where plants were once used to produce medicinal products during the Convent’s time.

Close to Mafra, José Franco's "Traditional Village" is a clay-built, miniature representation of traditional life in the region. Sculptor José Franco (1920–2009) dedicated his life to the art of modeling clay, creating a village that perfectly captures the essence of regional life. This life-sized village includes typical buildings and activities, such as a windmill, butcher's shop, water mill, blacksmith's forge, threshing floor, tavern, and carpenter’s workshop, all reflecting the architecture and trades of the past.

She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, is home to the Alcázar of Jerez, a stunning Moorish fortress that stands as a testament to the city’s rich Islamic and Christian heritage. Originally built in the 11th century by the Almohads, this well-preserved fortress features imposing defensive walls, serene courtyards, and intricate Islamic architecture. Later expanded by the Christian rulers, the Alcázar seamlessly blends Moorish, Gothic, and Baroque influences, making it one of Jerez’s most fascinating historical landmarks.

1. At the entrance, the massive stone walls and towers offer a glimpse into the fortress's strategic importance during the Moorish rule of Andalusia.

2. Inside, the original Moorish baths showcase traditional Andalusian design, with star-shaped ceiling openings that allow natural light to filter into the steam rooms.

3. The beautiful courtyard gardens, filled with fountains, palm trees, and orange groves, create a tranquil oasis and a perfect spot for photography.

4. The Octagonal Tower, a striking example of Almohad military architecture, provides a breathtaking view over Jerez’s historic center.

5. The Baroque-style Palace of Villavicencio, added after the Christian reconquest, houses an 18th-century camera obscura, offering a unique panoramic view of the city.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the morning to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and capture the best light for photography. Pair your visit with a nearby sherry tasting, as Jerez is world-famous for its fortified wines.

The Twelve Apostles is located on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. It’s a stunning coastal drive that is accessible with any type of vehicle. 

The Great Ocean Road stretches over 250km and there are many beautiful stops along the way.

Faroe Islands

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Tumbling Recklessly

A short hike gets you to the picturesque pique which is gorgeous. Very pretty and worth seeing if on Maui.

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Perched above the historic Alfama district in Lisbon, the Portas do Sol Viewpoint (Miradouro das Portas do Sol) offers one of the most enchanting vistas of the city. This scenic spot provides a picturesque panorama of old Lisbon, with its white church towers and colorful houses cascading down towards the Tagus River. Top reasons to visit:
1 - The viewpoint offers a breathtaking outlook over the medieval part of Lisbon, reminiscent of a Mediterranean village or a Greek island. From here, visitors can see a tapestry of terracotta roofs, ancient church domes, and the azure waters of the Tagus River, all framed by the lush greenery of the surroundings.
2 - The Alfama district, observable from the viewpoint, is one of the oldest in Lisbon and survived the great 1755 earthquake. This area's narrow streets and traditional Fado houses add a cultural depth to the stunning views from Portas do Sol.
3 - The terrace area of Portas do Sol is a popular spot for both locals and tourists to relax, take photos, and enjoy a drink from nearby kiosks. Its vantage point makes it ideal for capturing the essence of Lisbon in photographs.
4 - Around the viewpoint, visitors will find several cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating, offering a perfect spot to enjoy local cuisine while soaking in the views. The area also serves as a starting point for exploring the historic Alfama district.
The Portas do Sol Viewpoint is accessible by foot, tram, or bus, offering a pleasant journey through the charming streets of Lisbon. Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended for the best light for photography and to avoid the crowds. Public transportation options are available, including the iconic Tram 28, which passes nearby.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Overlooking the Grand Canal, Palazzo Grassi in Venice epitomizes the fusion of historic grandeur and contemporary art. Originally built in the Venetian Classical style, this majestic palace has evolved into a premier venue for modern art exhibitions, bridging the past with the present. Key highlights:

1: Architectural Splendor on the Grand Canal: Designed by Giorgio Massari and reconstructed between 1748 and 1772, Palazzo Grassi stands out with its academic classical style amidst the predominantly Byzantine, Romanesque, and Baroque Venetian palaces. Its white marble façade and ornate interiors, including frescoes by Michelangelo Morlaiter and Francesco Zanchi, are artistic marvels in their own right​​​​.

2: A Historic Transformation: From its ownership changes to its current role, Palazzo Grassi has undergone significant transformations. After the Grassi family's tenure, it became the International Centre of Arts and Costume in 1951 and was later acquired by the Fiat Group in 1983, aiming to transform it into a visual arts exhibition hall​​.

3: Modern Art Showcase: Since being acquired by French entrepreneur François Pinault in 2005, Palazzo Grassi has been extensively remodeled by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Reopened in 2006, it now houses the Pinault Collection, offering 5,000 m² of exhibition space for temporary modern art exhibitions​​.

Evolving Art: Palazzo Grassi

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the stunning Konyaaltı Beach, a 7-kilometer-long (4.3 miles) stretch of pebbled shoreline backed by the majestic Taurus Mountains. Known for its crystal-clear waters, Blue Flag status, and vibrant atmosphere, Konyaaltı is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking to swim, sunbathe, or enjoy water sports. With its well-maintained promenade, lively beach clubs, and scenic views, it offers the perfect mix of relaxation and entertainment.

1. Turquoise Mediterranean waters provide an excellent spot for swimming, paddleboarding, and jet skiing, with lifeguards ensuring a safe experience.

2. The Konyaaltı Beach Park features cafés, restaurants, and shaded picnic areas, perfect for a relaxing meal by the sea.

3. The panoramic views of the Taurus Mountains create an incredible contrast between the deep blue sea and rugged peaks, making it a dream location for photographers.

4. Sunset walks along the beachfront promenade, lined with palm trees and cycling paths, offer a peaceful way to enjoy the coastline.

5. Nearby attractions include Aqualand & Dolphinland for family-friendly fun and the Antalya Museum, just a short drive away.

Visitor Tip: Bring water shoes, as the beach is made of pebbles rather than sand. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the sea.

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Torres de Serranos, one of the best-preserved medieval gateways in Spain and a symbol of the city’s rich history. Built in 1392, these imposing Gothic towers were once part of Valencia’s ancient city walls and served as both a defensive structure and a ceremonial entrance for visiting royalty. Today, they offer visitors panoramic views of the city, making them a must-visit for history lovers and photographers alike.

1. The grand twin towers, standing 30 meters (98 feet) tall, showcase impressive Gothic military architecture and remain one of Valencia’s most iconic landmarks.

2. A steep but rewarding climb to the top provides breathtaking views of Valencia, including the historic center, the Turia Gardens, and the distant Mediterranean Sea.

3. The original medieval entrance arch, adorned with intricate stone carvings, offers a glimpse into Valencia’s past as a walled city.

4. The towers’ role as a former prison in the 16th–19th centuries adds an intriguing layer to their history, making them more than just a defensive structure.

5. Every year, the Torres de Serranos play a key role in Valencia’s famous Las Fallas festival, serving as the backdrop for the official opening ceremony.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the late afternoon for the best lighting and fewer crowds, and combine your trip with a stroll through the Turia Gardens, located right next to the towers.
