This is a meticulously curated 5-hour tour about the exquisite world of jewelry in Milan, blending design, materials, and craftsmanship. You’ll start from the Poldi Pezzoli Museum's Gold Room, which houses over two hundred precious jewels in four sections: ancient enamels, sacred jewelry, collectors' items, and personal ornaments, with a notable collection of Etruscan pieces from funerary legacies. This 3-hour photography experience takes place on the periphery of Valparaíso in the Playa Ancha district. Upon meeting your host in a storied cafe, you'll warm up over coffee while shooting textured interiors and panoramic vistas from the roof terrace. David will then weave you past pastel-hued mansions from the 19th century and neighborhood bakeries, sharing photography tips and anecdotes.

A leisurely gander brings you to Paseo 21 de Mayo—one of Valparaíso's most enthralling viewpoints. It's wise to carry cash should you wish to purchase a souvenir from the street vendors who you'll liaise with through Daniel. The route then passes through narrow streets adorned with murals and "playful" photo spots where you have a choice of sampling a completo (Chilean hot dog) or empanada and an ice cream with humble origins and a curious legacy. The experience ends at the oldest mansion on Cerro Artillería—a photographic treasure trove—where you may opt to stick around for lunch or a Pisco Sour.

Not only does this experience expose a neighborhood where few tourists tread, but your host will train your eye on hidden details. Growing up amid the windswept dunes of Concón and the bohemian streets of Valparaíso kindled David's appreciation for photography, nature, and art. He graduated from the University of Playa Ancha and went on to work as a Software Engineer, while flexing his skills behind the lens. 

As a self-taught photographer, David has honed his talent working with both landscapes and portraiture. He has an experimental style and a keen eye for spotting easily-missed details He has a special ability to see the potential in the simple aspects of local reality and culture, and always seeks to capture them in an original way through his photography. He works with a Canon DSLR, using 50mm and 18-55mm lenses for regular shots and a 300mm lens to capture distant subjects with clarity and depth.

David draws upon his extensive archive of travel photography experiences while mentoring those visiting Valparaíso on how to capture the beauty of a city and why you should look beyond what's at eye level.

Mexico

Just outside Oaxaca city is a community called San Andres Huayapam, that is famed as the birthplace of tejate. This thoughtfully curated experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with this tradition firsthand. You’ll explore the area where it was founded, peruse local murals, plus meet a traditional tejatera who will explain the process, ingredients and the history of this nutritious drink.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. An especially popular destination for Oaxacans on weekends, many travel here to sample tejate, visit nearby lakes, and enjoy gourmet fare in family-run restaurants. It’s an authentic window into everyday life in this stunning region of southern Mexico.

One Day in Mexico City

Fernwayer’s perfect one day in Mexico City moves from historic icons to Polanco’s flavors by night.

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal

My sister and I flew into Las Vegas to then see the Grand Canyon. We woke early to get picked up at our hotel and the tour took us to the Hoover Dam, a stop on Route 66 (where the Cars movie took place), and finally the Grand Canyon. We did an easy hike but it took about 4 hours. We stopped multiple times for pictures. It was amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice. 

My sister and I wish we had spent more time there and maybe hiking a different trail.

 Stepantsminda town.

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Riad Living

Medieval village of Siurana

Immerse yourself in Portugal’s culinary heritage with a hands-on Cataplana in Faro cooking class, where you’ll learn to craft one of the Algarve’s most cherished dishes. The cataplana is both a traditional dish and the name of the clam-shaped copper pan in which it’s prepared, with roots that trace back to Moorish influences in Portugal.
