You will stroll through neighborhoods featuring temples, shrines, parks, and rustic buildings in search of inspiration, but at a gentle pace that allows you to see authentic life in Kyoto that you might miss by trying to maximize the number of highlights you can visit in one day. In fact, Rachel lets you set the pace for the day, whether you prefer to visit more locations to do some quick sketches or just a few doing in-depth sketching.

As you explore, Rachel will explain the rich history and culture about the places you will visit, paying close attention to the details and nuances a casual visitor might overlook. Her watercolor paintings of Kyoto have been featured in the Kyoto Journal and her sumi-e paintings displayed in the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association's annual shows.

An experienced educator, she has offered on-site sketching and painting classes in Kyoto for over 7 years, working with a full range of ages and experience levels. Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. By the end of the session, you’ll take home a unique wearable piece of Turkish heritage.

Unlike traditional paper marbling, this experience explores the delicate and complex process of marbling on fabric, a technique requiring precision, patience, and expert guidance. Textiles absorb pigments differently than paper, making the final result even more dynamic and unpredictable—each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. Nesime Kantar is a highly respected Ebru artist and educator specializing in textile marbling. A graduate of Mimar Sinan University, she trained under master calligraphers and marblers, refining her expertise in both traditional and contemporary applications of Ebru. With over two decades of experience, Nesime has been leading workshops at her Galatart Ebru Workshop in Istanbul since 2009. Her passion for preserving Turkish marbling has led her to explore its many forms, from bookbinding to fabric design. She has perfected the intricate process of transferring Ebru onto textiles, creating wearable and decorative artworks that honor this historic craft. Through her engaging workshops, Nesime not only teaches technique but also shares the rich symbolism and meditative qualities of Ebru, ensuring that each participant leaves with a deeper appreciation for this living tradition.

Italy

Glide across the Venice lagoon on Davide’s vintage wooden motorboat to visit two iconic islands where craft has been a daily language for generations. First stop: Murano. Inside a family-run furnace, you’ll watch glass gather, breathe, and turn under the maestro’s tools as Davide explains and interprets techniques and guild lore. There’s time for questions and a walkthrough of the family's showrooms, where fire-shaped pieces reflect the lineage of Murano craft.

Then Burano greets you with painted facades and the fine geometry of lace. You’ll see artisans in small ateliers — needle, pillow, and pattern at work — then wander short lanes toward the bell tower and waterfront, pausing for color-drenched photographs. Throughout, Davide sets the rhythm — efficient but unhurried — ensuring you catch both the big and little aspects of island life and tradition. In 3.5 hours, you return to Venice with context, craft, and a bright memory of the lagoon’s makers.

What makes this special is Davide’s access — and how he weaves people, place and craft into a living story. In Murano, his connection with a local glassmaking family brings you onto the factory work floor, close enough to feel the heat as a maestro gathers, rolls and opens glass. Across the lagoon, Burano has its own rhythm. Davide’s mother’s family is from there, and the stories he shares are personal. Depending on the day, you may even meet one of his family members. These encounters are grounded in human relationships.

A passionate and experienced boatman and guide - born and raised in Venice, Davide De Giorgi has an extensive knowledge of the city’s lagoons, which he acquired through his family’s fishing background and his own experiences sailing around on a vintage motorboat. At the edge of Granada’s Albaicín neighborhood stands a factory where Fajalauza has been making pottery the same way for over 500 years. Fajalauza is a living record of Granada’s artistic identity, tracing its techniques to the Al-Andalus period and the workshops once clustered near Puerta de Fajalauza. This ceramic tradition blends Islamic, Iberian, Andalusian influences into a style known across Spain: white enamel, cobalt blue and green glazes, and patterns that echo the Alhambra.

This tour, led by a member of the Fajalauza Foundation, opens parts of the site normally closed to the public: kiln rooms, workshop floors, the small museum where archive pieces sit beside recent works. The glazes echo those used for centuries, often inspired by the Alhambra.

Ceramics here were created for daily use: vessels to carry water, preserve food, identify homes, mark graves. Even now, their forms remain largely unchanged. Few places in Spain hold time, rhythm, and tradition in such balance.

Fajalauza is one of few surviving craft lineages in Spain with unbroken continuity from Post-Reconquista era to the present. Fajalauza tiles replaced originals in Patio de los Arrayanes. Still run by the Morales family since the 19th century, its techniques and motifs—heraldic eagles, grenadine sprigs, blue-green latticework—have remained largely unchanged. The factory’s location, firing techniques, and visual language have endured war, exile and mass production. It is here, in the factory, where each piece begins—still shaped by wheel, hand, story.

The Morales family now runs the Fajalauza Foundation which preserves its legacy. This experience offers access not only to the factory but to the people preserving it. The Foundation’s members guide you through kilns, archives, workshops, sharing their stories. The tour is about heritage—but also part of a larger effort to preserve and convert it into a cultural center and school. You become part of that.

Toledo was famous in medieval Europe for its impact on intellectual life—largely thanks to its renowned Jewish community. Until 1492 and their expulsion from the city, Toledo’s Jewish population maintained a flourishing cultural life despite periods of discrimination. Its Jewish thinkers were central to the city’s role in translating classical texts into Latin and Arabic.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.
