The ceremonies of Holy Week date back to the Middle Ages and are linked to the Spanish liturgy, as Spaniards dominated the island for a long time.

Joining the procession, you will observe symbols of faith and the emotional participation of the inhabitants. 

Bosa’s Easter celebration reaches its emotional peak with S’Incontru (The Encounter), a procession that takes place at dawn on Easter Sunday. Two separate processions begin their solemn journey—one carrying the statue of the Risen Christ, the other bearing the Virgin Mary dressed in black. As they wind through the town's narrow, historic streets, led by locals in traditional Sardinian attire, the atmosphere builds with anticipation. The climax unfolds in Bosa’s main square, where the statues meet in a symbolic reunion. 

At this profound moment, Mary’s black cloak is replaced with a bright blue mantle, representing the end of mourning and the joy of resurrection. The air fills with the haunting beauty of traditional Sardinian hymns known as gosos, sung by the local choir. To explore this heritage, we’ll begin at the Cuicuilco archaeological site, a thriving city between 350 and 150 CE before it was engulfed by lava from the Xitle volcano. Here, you’ll gain an understanding of Mexica archaeology and culture.

Moving downtown, you’ll dive into an introductory Náhuatl language class. This will also give you an opportunity to learn more about the Nahua people's ritual calendars, deities, and how these cultural elements supported the functioning of one of the most fascinating ancient civilizations during its peak between 1345 and 1521.

A passionate traveler, Gaia has explored Eastern Europe and the Maghreb solo since 2018, drawing inspiration from places like Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, and beyond. The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a master artist specializing in miniature art, Tezhip (Islamic illumination), and floral designs since 1998. With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. She will be accompanied by a translator, allowing everyone to fully engage with her insights and expertise.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Disko Bay is the Iceberg Factory for 10% of Greenland's icebergs. Sadly, production has increased in recent years, with Spring melts as early as April.

Nothing prepares you for the disorientation - and wonderment - of the brilliance of a midnight Sun. Especially when surrounded by massive icebergs that reflect and mirror the sky and the sea.

I don't remember seeing this yesterday, I tell the boat captain, is this a new work of art? He laughs, and tells me that everyday is  a bit different. 

The midnight boat trip in end-July - as the sun sets just for a few minutes - is the best time to see the sky’s amazing colors reflected on the icebergs.

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

Juliet’s House in Verona

Late evening photo session at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Its 10,000 torii gates cast criss-crossing shadows into the night.

This Shinto shrine has a very mystical quality, especially when it’s pitch dark, with no people around. Perfect for long 20-second exposures to capture the light and the shadows. Or “light painting” with a flashlight. 

That’s me brandishing a lightsaber and painting with it  Now imagine this as a Star Wars location for a fight scene. 

In between sets of Torii Gates, there are family shrines which are even more special, complete with miniature Torii, candlesticks and kitsune.
