I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. DAY 1 – ARRIVAL, MATE, MILONGA | Arrive early or the day before so the city can settle around you. In the afternoon, a guided tasting introduces the ritual of mate with a local host, including high-quality blends and traditional biscuits that frame the story and etiquette. After a short pause, the evening unfolds inside a real milonga with a professional dancer who explains the codes and ronda. You may join a dance or simply observe with a glass of wine.

Çavuşin Old Village, perched on the edge of Cappadocia’s rugged landscape, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history with its abandoned stone houses and striking hilltop views.

Cadiz Museum

Peloponnese, Greece, is home to the legendary Mycenae Archaeological Site, one of the most important ancient sites in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the heart of the powerful Mycenaean civilization (1600–1100 BCE), this ancient citadel was famously linked to King Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks in Homer’s Iliad. Today, visitors can walk through the remnants of this Bronze Age city, exploring its massive stone walls, royal tombs, and iconic Lion Gate, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding Argolid countryside.

1. The Lion Gate, adorned with a pair of stone lions, serves as the monumental entrance to the citadel and is one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Greek architecture.

2. The Treasury of Atreus (or Tomb of Agamemnon), a massive beehive-shaped tomb, impresses visitors with its monumental scale and perfectly preserved corbelled dome.

Mycenae Archaeological Site

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a mesmerizing protected coastal lagoon in Portugal’s Algarve region, is one of the country’s richest natural habitats. Known for its intricate network of islands, sandy beaches, salt marshes, and tidal flats, this nature park is a haven for biodiversity and a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Spanning around 170 square kilometers, it is home to a variety of bird species, unique plants, and marine life, making it an ideal destination for exploration, whether by foot or by boat.

Highlights of a Visit to Parque Natural da Ria Formosa:

1. Visit the uninhabited island, also known as Ilha da Barreta, which offers pristine beaches and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for those seeking solitude and scenic views of the Atlantic, and you can explore the soft sands, swim in clear waters, or walk along nature trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints.

2. Ria Formosa is famous for its diverse bird population, including flamingos, spoonbills, and rare purple herons. It’s also one of the few habitats of the endangered Portuguese water dog and the rare seahorse population in its tranquil waters.

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.

Catania's fish market, known locally as "A Piscaria," is the heart of the city. It’s loud, it’s surprising, it’s humbling, it’s real. Colours, fragrances, and market place shouting.

A visit to Catania's fish market allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, adding a unique and flavorful element to your Sicily travels.

The fish market comes to life in the early morning, around 5.30 a.m., when the fishmongers arrive. But from around 7.30 a.m., the market offers a more calm environment; it's easier to roam among the booths, and soak up the environment.

Catania Fish Market

Chile’s Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile, stretching over 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) in the heart of the Atacama Desert. Framed by the Andes Mountains and home to spectacular salt-crusted landscapes and vibrant flamingo-filled lagoons, this surreal environment offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike. The salt flat’s cracked surface, mineral-rich pools, and reflections of distant volcanoes create a breathtaking scene, especially at sunrise or sunset.


1. Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is one of the best places to spot Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos, which feed in the shallow waters.

2. Endless salt formations, resembling a lunar landscape, stretch as far as the eye can see, providing a truly surreal experience.

3. Panoramic views of the Licancabur and Lascar Volcanoes, which change colors throughout the day, making for stunning photography.

4. Peaceful, remote atmosphere, where the silence of the desert and the vast open space create a truly humbling experience.

5. Sunset at Salar de Atacama is a must-see, as the sky transforms into a mix of oranges, purples, and pinks, reflected in the still lagoons.

Visitor Tip: Bring binoculars for birdwatching and a jacket, as temperatures drop quickly after sunset. Visit in the late afternoon to witness the stunning golden-hour light over the salt flats. A guided tour is recommended for deeper insights into the area’s geology and wildlife.

Salar de Atacama

Tanzania

On a cool morning drive in Ngorongoro Crater, we meet a pride of eleven hungry lions —  lean and menacing. We stay with them for five hours through several hunting attempts .

One of the lionesses spots a herd of zebras. She masterfully rounds them up and sends them in the direction of her waiting pride. At the last minute though, the zebras, finding new energy or a brilliant leader, take a united front and flee. The zebras will live another day. 

Well, hello there! - say the lions to a group of wild buffaloes .. and quickly dissolve into the grass. The buffaloes can smell the lions. They start backing up and eventually escape. 

Next, the younger lions eye an ostrich In the distance. But it fluffs up its feathers with a disdainful air, and runs away.

Mobile food is awfully hard to get your paws on. The lions decide to lie in the grass and wait it out. Someone will come by. It’s just a matter of time.

A Matter of Life

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

The Alentejo region, located in south-central Portugal, is home to a captivating collection of megalithic monuments that date back over 6,000 years, offering a rare glimpse into ancient European civilizations. The area around Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city with Roman, medieval, and contemporary layers of history, is particularly rich in these prehistoric sites. Exploring the ancient megaliths of Alentejo and the medieval walled city of Évora allows visitors to travel through time—from Neolithic rituals to Roman conquests, Gothic architecture, and beyond.

Highlights of the Ancient Megaliths and Évora:

1. Visit the Cromeleque dos Almendres, one of Europe’s oldest and largest stone circles, dating back to 4000 BC. This oval arrangement of 95 standing stones, located near Évora, is thought to have served as a ceremonial or astronomical site and offers a mystifying connection to the region’s ancient past, surrounded by scenic rolling hills.

2. Discover Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, the largest dolmen (stone tomb) in the Iberian Peninsula. This monument provides insight into the burial rituals and spiritual life of prehistoric communities. The scale and preservation of the structure are impressive, giving visitors a direct encounter with Portugal’s Neolithic heritage.

3. Wander through Évora’s Roman Temple, locally known as the Temple of Diana. This well-preserved structure, dating back to the 1st century, stands proudly in Évora’s historic center and offers a unique view of Roman influence in Portugal, surrounded by medieval buildings.

4. Explore the medieval walled city of Évora, whose Gothic cathedral, Renaissance palaces, and charming plazas display centuries of history and architectural beauty. Évora’s city walls have stood since the Moorish period, and within them, a maze of narrow streets leads visitors through a blend of eras.
