This half-day private mosaic experience takes place in the studio of the bilingual muralist, Shannon McEvoy. Under Shannon's guidance, you will design and fabricate your own mosaic masterpiece to take home as a memento of your time in Chile.  From the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, to the colorful hills of Valparaiso, to the Villarrica Volcano in Pucon, to the rock formations of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile is filled with breathtaking landscapes that are gorgeous to mosaic.

Shannon will work with you to help you bring your vision to fruition. After the activity concludes, Shannon will grout your mosaic tile and help you to arrange the pick-up from her studio 48+ hours later. During the workshop, you'll hear of the significance of mosaics in Chile—a country famed for its street art and murals. You'll hear about Shannon's role as a mosaic muralist working in Santiago, Puente Alto (the Mosaic Capital of the Southern Hemisphere), and beyond.

This experience invites you into the intimate studio of an artist in Santiago to create your own Chile-inspired mosaic artwork. This may be of an abstract style or inspired by Chilean landscapes. You may choose to collaborate with your travel partner and create one mosaic to take home, or create individual masterpieces.

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of mosaic techniques as Shannon helps you assemble your artwork. As an artistic director, Shannon collaborates with Chilean muralists and champions the community aspect of creation—she believes that art is for everyone. During this activity, you'll have the opportunity to quiz Shannon about life as a bilingual expat artist in Chile, her current projects, and how you can bring more creativity into your life. This bilingual mosaic masterclass is the perfect opportunity to practice your Spanish and pick up some essential "Chilenismos" (Chilean slang) for your onward travels.

This experience takes place in Shannon's studio in Providencia, Santiago de Chile. The exact address to is provided after booking. If traveling by metro, take Line 1 and alight at either Pedro de Valdivia or Manuel Montt. It's a 15-minute walk to Shannon’s studio from either station. Shannon is a multimedia artist who loves exploring different languages and cultures, meeting new people, and listening to their stories. Originally from Minnesota, she studied abroad in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. The street art of Valparaíso influenced her so profoundly that she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and pursued a career as a muralist.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—but her talents don’t stop there. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography.

Shannon loves sharing her passions for art and language. To her, both are about expressing oneself and building meaningful connections. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

A relationship-led full-day wine journey through the Médoc, shaped by long-standing ties with family estates and classified châteaux - highlighting the wine, people, and continuity.

Begin with pickup at your accommodation in Bordeaux and a drive north into the Médoc, where vineyards stretch between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic. The first stop is a family owned winery. A guided visit introduces traditional production methods, and the tasting reflects the character of a long established estate developed over generations. Continue at an unhurried pace, with time for a French style picnic before returning to the vineyards. 

In the afternoon, visit a Grand Cru Classé château listed in the historic 1855 classification, that offers insight into Médoc’s prestigious wine traditions. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Istria, Croatia, is home to the picturesque Motovun Hilltop Town, a medieval fortress perched high above the Mirna River Valley. Surrounded by rolling vineyards and dense truffle-rich forests, Motovun is one of the most charming and best-preserved hilltop towns in Istria. Its cobbled streets, ancient stone walls, and breathtaking panoramic views make it a dream destination for photographers and history lovers alike. With its rich Venetian heritage, world-famous truffles, and an internationally acclaimed film festival, Motovun is a true cultural and gastronomic gem.

1. At the top of the town, ancient stone walls offer spectacular 360° views of Istria’s vineyards, forests, and the meandering Mirna River, making it one of the most scenic spots in Croatia.

2. The historic Church of St. Stephen, built in the 17th century, features an elegant bell tower and an interior adorned with Baroque artwork, adding to the town’s timeless beauty.

3. Every summer, the Motovun Film Festival transforms the town into an open-air cinema, attracting filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world for a unique cinematic experience under the stars.

Motovun Hilltop Town

La Scala in Milan is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. It’s a symbol of cultural and historical opulence. Since its opening in 1778, it has been a hallowed ground for opera and ballet, drawing aficionados from around the world. What to look for when visiting:
1 - Since its commission by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, La Scala has been a focal point for Italian opera. Designed by Piermarini, it has premiered works of legendary composers like Bellini and Verdi, and hosted luminaries such as Nureyev and Callas. La Scala's inaugural performance in 1778 was marked by an incident where the chandelier crashed to the ground, fortunately without causing injuries. This dramatic start did not hinder its rise to prominence as a central figure in Milanese culture.

2 - The theater has undergone various renovations that improved acoustics and seating. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior of La Scala is a blend of neoclassical style and modern comforts, with the individual boxes once decorated according to the owner's tastes. The auditorium is adorned with plush red velvet and gilded accents.

3 - Renowned for its near-perfect acoustics, La Scala is a challenging yet prestigious stage for the world’s most talented performers. The acoustics are so fine-tuned that even the type of rope used backstage is chosen for its sound qualities. La Scala was also a pioneer in lighting technology, being the first building in Milan to have electric lights. 

4 - The La Scala Museum, part of the opera house, offers insights into its rich history and is included in the tour of the opera house. It’s a trove of operatic history, showcasing costumes, set designs, and rare artifacts. It provides a deeper understanding of the theater's impact on the arts.

Tickets should be booked well in advance, especially for popular performances. The upper gallery seats offer a great view and acoustics at a lower price.

Teatro alla Scala

Canada

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

Dancing Dragons Across The Sky

Pitti Palace, Florence's most significant palace, exemplifies the city's artistic and historical richness. Originally built by the Florentine banker Luca Pitti in the 15th century, it was acquired by the Medici family and became a symbol of their power. Top 5 highlights:
1 - The Palatine Gallery: Hosting an array of masterpieces by artists like Raphael, Titian, and Rubens, the Palatine Gallery is situated in the palace's state rooms. The artworks, arranged as part of the decor rather than chronologically, offer a unique insight into Renaissance and Baroque art styles.
2 - Gallery of Modern Art: Occupying the second floor, this gallery provides a comprehensive overview of 19th and early 20th-century Tuscan and Italian painting, including works from the Macchiaioli School. It is a testament to Italy's evolving artistic landscape, showcasing a chronological progression from Neoclassicism to the 1920s.
3 - Fashion and Costume Galleries: These galleries, added in 1983, display a vast collection of historical costumes and modern fashion, including works by renowned designers like Versace and Armani. The items, showcasing sartorial evolution from various centuries, are periodically rotated due to their delicate nature.
4 - Royal Apartments and Silver Museum: The royal apartments display opulence and Baroque styles from different eras, preserving the original furniture arrangements. The Silver Museum, located on the ground floor, houses a collection of precious metals, jewelry, and Medicis' treasures.
5 - Boboli Gardens: A magnificent example of classical European parks, the Boboli Gardens, dating back to the mid-16th century, provide a refreshing escape. Filled with sculptures, fountains, and breathtaking views of Florence, the gardens are an integral part of the Pitti Palace experience.
A quick tour of the palace's highlights and the main part of the Boboli Gardens takes about three hours.

Pitti Palace Treasures

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain

Colombia

Alghero Old Town, located on the northwest coast of Sardinia, is a charming and historic seaside district brimming with Catalan influence. Known as “Barceloneta” or “Little Barcelona,” this medieval town enchants visitors with its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and stunning sea views. Surrounded by well-preserved fortifications and bastions, Alghero offers a blend of cultural heritage, Mediterranean charm, and culinary delights. 
1. The Catalan-Gothic architecture reflects the town’s rich history, particularly in landmarks like the Cathedral of Santa Maria and Palazzo Guillot. 
2. The sea walls and bastions, such as the Bastione della Maddalena, offer picturesque promenades with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, especially during sunset. 
3. Narrow cobblestone streets lead to charming squares, artisan shops, and boutiques selling local crafts, coral jewelry, and Sardinian delicacies. 
4. The Tower of Sulis and other historic watchtowers tell the story of the town’s strategic significance and provide great photo opportunities. 
5. Alghero’s lively atmosphere is enhanced by its cafes, gelaterias, and seafood restaurants, where visitors can enjoy Sardinian specialties like aragosta alla catalana (Catalan-style lobster). 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 2–3 hours wandering the old town, with extra time for dining or enjoying a sunset stroll along the sea walls. Visit in the evening for a magical ambiance when the streets come alive with lights and activity.

Alghero Old Town

A walk along the oceanfront to the Castle of San Sebastián in Cádiz is a captivating experience that combines stunning coastal views, rich history, and the serene beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the small La Caleta Beach, the castle stands at the end of a long promenade stretching out into the sea. Built on a small islet, the Castle of San Sebastián has protected Cádiz since the 18th century and now offers visitors a chance to explore its ancient fortifications while enjoying panoramic ocean views.

Highlights of the Oceanfront Walk:

1. La Caleta Beach: Begin your walk at La Caleta, one of Cádiz’s most picturesque beaches. With its golden sands and calm waters, this spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing dip. The beach is framed by the Castle of San Sebastián and Castle of Santa Catalina, creating a beautiful coastal scene.

2. The Promenade: The scenic walkway leading to the castle is a peaceful stretch, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic on both sides. As you walk along, you’ll feel the cool ocean breeze and hear the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore.

3. Castle of San Sebastián: Once you reach the castle, explore its fortifications and take in the sense of history that surrounds you. Originally built as a defensive structure, the castle is now used for cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts, and provides a spectacular vantage point for watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

4. Sunset Views: The castle's location offers one of the best spots in Cádiz for viewing the sunset. The golden light reflecting on the water and the ancient walls creates a magical atmosphere.

Tip: Visit during the evening to catch the sunset, and don’t forget your camera for some stunning coastal shots! Entrance to the castle is often free, but check for events that may add to your visit.

Naples, Italy, is home to the serene Santa Chiara Cloister, a breathtaking oasis of history and artistry hidden within the bustling city. Part of the larger Santa Chiara religious complex, this 14th-century cloister is a masterpiece of Neapolitan craftsmanship, famous for its majolica-tiled columns and benches that depict scenes of daily life. A visit here offers a peaceful retreat, where visitors can admire exquisite frescoes, walk through a tranquil garden, and explore the site's fascinating history.

1. In the center of the cloister, a stunning courtyard features majolica-tiled columns and benches, decorated with vibrant blue, yellow, and green ceramics depicting pastoral and mythological scenes. The tiles, created in the 18th century, are a highlight of Neapolitan artistry.
2. Along the perimeter, ancient frescoes cover the walls, illustrating religious narratives and glimpses of medieval life. Some of these delicate paintings date back to the 14th century.
3. A peaceful garden filled with citrus trees and fragrant flowers offers a quiet escape from Naples' lively streets. The combination of greenery and historic architecture makes for a picturesque and relaxing visit.
4. The on-site museum and archaeological area contain remnants of ancient Roman baths and medieval artifacts, revealing the site’s deep historical significance.

Nestled about 10 km east of Lagoa, Porches offers a blend of historical intrigue and artistic creativity, with a population of just over 2,000 residents. Its history stretches back to Neolithic times, and the town's architecture and crafts reflect centuries of cultural evolution. Top 5 highlights:
1. Ceramics Tradition: Porches is famous for its pottery, a tradition revived in the late 1960s by Irish artist Patrick Swift and Lima de Freitas. Today, you can explore numerous workshops along the EN125, witnessing artisans creating hand-painted ceramics, a testament to the town's artistic legacy.
2. Historic Architecture: The town boasts unique architectural features, such as the typical Porches chimneys, each reflecting the wealth of its owner. These chimneys are original, colorful, and very old, with some dating back to the 18th century, showcasing the town's historical depth.
