With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. Museo de Bellas Artes

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.

Mining the Past

Peloponnese, Greece, is home to the legendary Mycenae Archaeological Site, one of the most important ancient sites in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the heart of the powerful Mycenaean civilization (1600–1100 BCE), this ancient citadel was famously linked to King Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks in Homer’s Iliad. Today, visitors can walk through the remnants of this Bronze Age city, exploring its massive stone walls, royal tombs, and iconic Lion Gate, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding Argolid countryside.

1. The Lion Gate, adorned with a pair of stone lions, serves as the monumental entrance to the citadel and is one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Greek architecture.

2. The Treasury of Atreus (or Tomb of Agamemnon), a massive beehive-shaped tomb, impresses visitors with its monumental scale and perfectly preserved corbelled dome.

3. Inside the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, visitors can see pottery, tools, and intricate gold artifacts, including replicas of the famous Mask of Agamemnon.

Mycenae Archaeological Site

The Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna are a magnificent display of early Christian art, dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. These mosaics, housed in several churches and monuments across the city, represent some of the finest examples of Byzantine craftsmanship in the world. Declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Ravenna’s mosaics are celebrated for their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and profound religious significance, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s storied past as a center of the Western Roman Empire and later Byzantine rule.

Highlights of Ravenna's Byzantine Mosaics:
1. Basilica of San Vitale: This church is home to Ravenna’s most famous mosaics, depicting Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora surrounded by attendants. The mosaics’ vivid purples and golds demonstrate the power and divine right of the rulers.

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

4. Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha: This chapel, perched on a dramatic clifftop overlooking the Atlantic, is a site of historical significance and mystery. Its exact construction date remains unknown, but it forms an integral part of the town's identity.
5. Wine and Gastronomy: The town offers a range of dining experiences, from traditional Portuguese cuisine to international flavors, complemented by locally produced wines.
Porches is easily accessible by car, with its location between Lagoa and Albufeira. The town’s pottery shops are a must-visit, offering a unique shopping experience. For those looking to explore the wider Algarve region, Porches serves as a convenient base with several accommodation options available.
