Kyoto has long been a center of washi artistry, supplying paper to temples, palaces and traditional arts.

You’ll begin in the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, where you’ll learn about plants that form the base of washi and how the fibers are transformed by hand. From there, Emilie will guide you to artisan studios, offering a close look at traditional techniques and the lived artistry behind them.

Later, you’ll step inside a historic noble residence, where washi-lined walls and shoji screens show how paper softens light and defines space in Japanese design. The walk ends in a curated selection of shops in Demachiyanagi offering handmade washi — a way to see the best in the craft today, and an invitation to take home a piece of enduring culture.

Washi may be everywhere in Kyoto, but without context, it’s easy to overlook. Washi, The Texture of Kyoto

A four-hour private guided experience through Kyoto with Emilie, including curated visits to washi-related sites. 

Where possible, you’ll walk between stops, as the city itself is part of the experience. Short taxi rides and any ticket or entry fees (if applicable) are covered.

This 3.5-hour architectural tour of Valparaíso, Chile, is led by local architect and master of urban planning Jaime Núñez. Jaime (also known as Ja Cariocandino) will introduce you to the city’s layered identity through a tour structured around ten public spaces that—in his expert opinion—are architecturally remarkable. Spain

A calçotada is a seasonal Catalan ritual (November–April) centered on the communal roasting and eating of calçots - sweeter, elongated onion-like shoot cultivated in trenches.  

You’ll depart Barcelona in private car, into the Catalan countryside. Your destination: a working garden where calçots (pronounced kal-sotz) are grown, harvested and prepared over open fire. 

Along the way, you’ll stop at the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus, a medieval Cistercian abbey built in 12th century, with Gothic cloisters, royal tombs and austere architectural purity.  

At the garden, you’ll meet the farming family and learn about the cultivation of calçots. Then comes the feast: calçots grilled until the outer layers blacken, wrapped in newspaper to steam and eaten by hand — peeling away charred exteriors and dipping each stalk into romesco (or a similar sauce). Expect to get your fingers messy, and partake in what is, by design, a convivial, generous meal. This is as farm-to-table fresh as it gets.

A calçotada is a food experience that is sociable, traditional, delicious, and playful. It’s about ritual, regional identity, rural air, fire, laughter, wine, and the earth that grew your food. The ritual of gathering friends for a gluttonous afternoon to eat them defines Catalan winter life in rural areas. Likely meaning “place of coyotes,” Coyoacán was originally a village founded by the Tepanec people in pre-Columbian times. In 1521, it became the first capital of ‘New Spain’ and remained a settlement distinct from Mexico City until the 1850s. Now located in the south of Mexico City (CDMX), Coyoacán is perhaps best known today for being the home of the Frida Kahlo Museum and the impressive colonial-era architecture. 

Bruno, your guide for this tour, is an artist who grew up in Coyoacán. Through his unique perspective, you’ll gain historical, personal, and artistic context for this beautiful neighborhood. In her workshops, Eri welcomes beginners and enthusiasts alike. She shares not only the techniques of shodō — brush, ink, form — but its capacity to cultivate mindfulness and creative presence. Stopping at viewpoints and small villages along the way makes for a more enjoyable and scenic trip.

Tizi n’Tichka Pass

Karagöl Nature Park, nestled in the mountains near İzmir, offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. It’s a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility in nature.

Karagöl Nature Park

Portugal’s Elvas Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, form one of the largest and best-preserved defensive complexes in Europe. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, Elvas played a crucial role in Portugal’s military history, particularly during the Restoration War (1640–1668). The star-shaped fortresses, massive city walls, and underground tunnels showcase the brilliance of 17th-century military engineering, making Elvas a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

1. Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça, an imposing hilltop fortress, offers breathtaking panoramic views and a fascinating history as a former prison and military outpost.

2. Forte de Santa Luzia, another well-preserved star-shaped fort, features an underground passage connecting it to the city, once used for secret troop movements.

3. The Walls of Elvas, an extensive network of Vauban-style ramparts, bastions, and moats, encircle the historic town and are considered a masterpiece of European military architecture.

4. The Amoreira Aqueduct, a stunning 16th-century structure with 843 arches, was built to provide water to the fortified city and remains one of the region’s most impressive sights.

5. Historic center of Elvas, with its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and landmarks like the Elvas Cathedral and Military Museum, offers a glimpse into the town’s rich past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunset for the best lighting over the fortresses and surrounding countryside. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the fortifications involves walking over uneven terrain.

Elvas Fortifications

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

The Guadalquivir River Walk in Seville offers a peaceful yet vibrant way to experience the city’s charm while enjoying scenic views along one of Spain’s most historic rivers. Stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir, this popular promenade links some of Seville’s most famous attractions, offering a blend of history, culture, and leisure activities. The river itself played a key role in Seville’s development, once serving as the main conduit for trade with the New World. Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

Highlights of the Guadalquivir River Walk:

1. Torre del Oro: Begin your walk near this iconic 13th-century tower. Its golden glow and rich history make it a perfect starting point. From here, enjoy views of the river and the surrounding monuments.

2. Triana Bridge and Market: Cross the picturesque Puente de Triana to visit the traditional Triana neighborhood, known for its flamenco roots and lively market. The market is a great spot for fresh produce, local crafts, and authentic tapas.

3. Parque de María Luisa: Along the river, you'll find this lush park, perfect for a rest amidst palm trees, fountains, and beautiful gardens. Nearby is the iconic Plaza de España, another must-see.

4. River Cruises and Water Activities: If walking isn’t enough, hop on a riverboat cruise for a different perspective of the city. Alternatively, rent a kayak or paddleboard for a more active experience on the water.

Tip: Visit during sunset for a magical atmosphere, as the golden light reflects off the water, providing perfect photo opportunities.

Guadalquivir River Walk

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to the Bosques de Palermo, the city’s largest and most beautiful green space, often compared to Central Park in New York or El Retiro in Madrid. Officially known as Parque Tres de Febrero, this urban oasis covers over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) and features serene lakes, lush gardens, and tree-lined walking paths, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature.


1. Rosedal (Rose Garden) – A stunning rose garden with over 18,000 roses, charming white bridges, and elegant statues, offering picture-perfect scenery.

2. Lago de Regatas (Boating Lake) – Visitors can rent paddle boats or rowboats to explore the peaceful waters while admiring the city skyline.

3. Jardín Japonés (Japanese Garden) – One of the largest Japanese gardens outside Japan, featuring koi ponds, red bridges, and tea houses for a tranquil escape.

4. El Planetario Galileo Galilei – A futuristic dome-shaped planetarium, offering interactive astronomy exhibits and stunning night sky projections.

5. Sculptures and Monuments, including the famous "Monumento a los Españoles", a grand marble structure celebrating Argentina’s Spanish heritage.

Bosques de Palermo

Greece

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, perched on the southwestern tip of Santorini, is one of the island’s most iconic and scenic landmarks. Built in 1892, this historic lighthouse is renowned for its stunning views of the Aegean Sea and dramatic sunsets. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers a peaceful and picturesque spot to admire the rugged coastline and soak in the natural beauty of Santorini. 
1. The panoramic views from the lighthouse are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the cliffs of Santorini. 
2. The sunset experience here rivals that of Oia, but with far fewer crowds, making it a more tranquil and intimate spot to watch the day end. 
3. The lighthouse is a historic landmark, representing one of Greece’s oldest and most beautiful lighthouses, with its classic whitewashed design blending harmoniously with the rugged landscape. 
4. The surrounding cliffs and coastline create a dramatic backdrop, perfect for photography and quiet reflection. 
5. The area is easily accessible by car or scooter, and the short walk to the lighthouse offers lovely views along the way. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour at the lighthouse, especially during sunset for incredible views and photo opportunities. Bring sturdy shoes if you want to explore the rocky surroundings and stay for the golden hour to capture the lighthouse and caldera bathed in soft light.

Wander the city

Valencia, Spain, is home to Albufera Natural Park, a stunning wetland reserve just 10 km (6 miles) south of the city. This vast freshwater lagoon, surrounded by rice fields and wildlife-rich marshlands, is the birthplace of paella and a haven for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and photographers. A visit to Albufera offers a chance to experience Valencia’s traditional fishing villages, serene boat rides, and breathtaking sunsets, making it a perfect escape from the urban bustle.

1. The Albufera Lagoon, one of Spain’s largest wetlands, is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including flamingos, herons, and other migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

2. Traditional boat rides on wooden fishing boats (albuferencs) offer a peaceful way to explore the lagoon and enjoy its mirror-like waters reflecting the sky.

3. The park is the birthplace of paella, and the nearby village of El Palmar is famous for serving authentic Valencian paella, made with locally grown rice.

Albufera Natural Park

Seferihisar and Sığacık, Turkey’s first “Cittaslow” towns, offer a peaceful escape from modern hustle. Known for their relaxed pace of life, cobblestone streets, and local artisan markets, they embrace slow living while preserving their rich cultural heritage. The tranquil seaside views and welcoming atmosphere make them perfect for a quiet getaway.

2. Local markets in Sığacık are perfect for exploring handmade crafts and organic products.
3. The historic Sığacık Castle, built during the Seljuk era, is a must-visit landmark.

Seferihisar & Sığacık

The Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Agrigento, Sicily, is a breathtaking testament to Greek civilization in Italy. Spanning over 1300 hectares, this archaeological marvel showcases some of the best-preserved Ancient Greek structures in the world, enveloped in a landscape of olive trees and almond blossoms. Here are the no-miss highlights:

1: The site's most iconic structure is the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples in existence. Erected in the 5th century BC, it stands as a stunning example of Greek architectural prowess and harmony.

2: Another remarkable structure is the Temple of Hera Lacinia, located at the eastern end of the site. Although partly ruined, it offers an evocative glimpse into the past, especially enchanting at sunset when its columns are bathed in golden hues.

3: The remnants of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once one of the largest temples of antiquity, illustrate the sheer scale of ancient religious devotion. Although now in ruins, its past grandeur is still palpable.

4: Beyond these monumental temples, the site includes the Sanctuary of Chthonic Deities, offering insight into lesser-known aspects of Greek religion and rituals.

5: Amidst these ancient ruins lies the Kolymbetra Garden, a lush and peaceful haven. This garden is a living museum of Mediterranean flora and a testament to the ancient system of water management.

The Valley of the Temples is open year-round, with longer hours in the summer. Guided tours are available and recommended to fully appreciate the site's historical context. The entrance fee varies, with discounts for students and seniors. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, as the site spans a large area with limited shade.
