The experience begins Luca’s family home in the heart of Mamoiada. After a brief introduction in this 19th-century house, you’ll head to the vineyard just outside the village—a landscape shaped by vines, granite, and centuries of tradition.

There, among Cannonau rows and sweeping hills, stands a nuraghe: a prehistoric stone tower built by Sardinia’s ancient people, still intact after thousands of years. Beside it is a small farmhouse and a wooden patio overlooking the vines—your table for a guided tasting of three wines, including Luca’s rare Cannonau Bianco, made from an ancient cross between Cannonau and Gallòpu.

This white grape, known as Gallòpu, is now produced only by Luca in all of Barbagia. The tasting is followed by a traditional lunch: local appetizers, handmade ravioli with ragù, and slow-cooked sheep stew—a moment of pure Sardinian depth.

Luca is the only winemaker in Barbagia producing Gallòpu, an ancient white grape once nearly lost. His Cannonau Bianco is not just rare—it’s a symbol of his vision: to innovate without erasing the past, to make wines that speak both of place and of intention.

Alongside him is his father, who still tends the vines with the same hands that shaped them decades ago. Their work isn’t rushed; it follows the rhythm of the soil, the altitude, the granite. Luca Gungui is a winemaker and native of Mamoiada, a small village in the heart of Sardinia where wine is a family tradition and a way of life. He represents the third generation of a lineage rooted in this land, where viticulture is passed down like a story. After years of working in communication, Luca chose to return to his origins and dedicate himself fully to wine, blending modern sensibility with deep respect for ancestral knowledge.

He produces his wines from native Sardinian varieties grown in high-altitude vineyards between 500 and 850 meters above sea level. Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border.

Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico.

Rocío is a graphic designer who has managed communications projects for a range of institutions, including government agencies and nonprofits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She loves sharing the diversity and richness of the region through visual storytelling.

This walking and photography tour takes you through the soulful backstreets of Alfama—Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. Starting at the base of Elevador do Castelo, you’ll ascend into a maze of cobbled alleys, tiled façades and sunlit balconies where laundry sways in the wind.

Led by a seasoned photographer, you’ll move through lived-in corridors and quiet courtyards that retain the rhythm of daily life. Along the way, there’s a relaxed café stop where you’ll try pastéis de nata and other traditional pastries. Tavira's unique blend of historical influences, from its Moorish occupation to the Christian reconquest, has left a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Top 5 highlights:
- Tavira was a significant Moorish stronghold from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The town still reflects this era with its whitewashed buildings, distinctive Moorish-style doors, and rooftops. Timeless Charm: Tavira

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

Volcano Climbing

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

The Old Town of Faro is the historic heart of this coastal city in the Algarve region of Portugal. Encased within ancient Roman walls, this quaint district offers a stunning journey through Faro’s layered history, with remnants of Roman, Moorish, and medieval Portuguese influences. 

Highlights:
1. Begin your exploration at the Arco da Vila, a beautiful neoclassical archway that serves as the grand entrance to the Old Town. Built on Moorish foundations, this gate dates back to the 19th century and is a picturesque starting point for visitors to enter Faro’s walled historic center.

2. Situated in the central Largo da Sé square, Faro Cathedral is a must-see, with its Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Climb to the top of the bell tower for stunning views over the Ria Formosa lagoon and the city’s terracotta rooftops, or admire the intricate azulejo tiles that decorate its interior.

3. Housed in a former convent, this museum boasts a collection that spans centuries, from Roman artifacts to Moorish and medieval pieces. Don’t miss the Roman mosaic that depicts Oceanus, a standout piece in this fascinating museum.

4. Visit Igreja do Carmo (Church of Carmo), an ornate Baroque church famous for its Chapel of Bones, a hauntingly beautiful crypt adorned with the skulls and bones of monks, serving as a striking reminder of life’s transience.

5. Just steps from the Old Town, this protected coastal lagoon is ideal for a relaxing end to the day with a sunset walk or a boat trip, offering glimpses of the Algarve’s rich biodiversity.

To fully capture Faro’s Old Town, a camera is essential to preserve the magic of its streets and architecture. Visit early or in the late afternoon to enjoy a quieter atmosphere and beautiful lighting.

Aldeia José Franco, located in the village of Sobreiro between Lisbon and Mafra, is an enchanting open-air museum that brings Portuguese rural life and traditions vividly to life. Created by potter José Franco in the 1940s, this miniaturized village features authentic replicas of old Portuguese homes, mills, workshops, and shops that reflect the customs and everyday lives of the Portuguese countryside.

Highlights of Aldeia José Franco:

1. Explore a charming miniature village that recreates rural Portuguese life with attention to detail. You’ll find scaled-down houses, churches, schools, and windmills, each showing different aspects of traditional Portuguese architecture and the everyday lives of past generations.

2. Step inside workshops where skilled artisans, following traditional methods, work with pottery, weaving, and woodcrafts. These displays offer a glimpse into the old trades that sustained Portuguese communities and allow visitors to witness how handicrafts were made before the industrial era.

Pitti Palace, Florence's most significant palace, exemplifies the city's artistic and historical richness. Originally built by the Florentine banker Luca Pitti in the 15th century, it was acquired by the Medici family and became a symbol of their power. Top 5 highlights:
