This curated half-day tour begins at the edges of Arashiyama, away from the crowds, in a moss-covered temple filled with 1,200 small stone figures. Each has a different expression — some joyful, some quietly watching. They were carved by ordinary people under the guidance of a Buddhist sculptor. You’ll visit Giōji Temple, a quiet sanctuary tied to the Heike Monogatari, where a once-famous dancer became a nun. The moss garden and bamboo groves here feel like a story being slowly told.

From there, you walk through the preserved district of Saga Toriimoto, where Meiji-era townhouses now hold small family-run craft shops. You’ll visit two: a papermaker using mulberry bark and centuries-old techniques and an indigo-dyeing store.

Step into a Kurdish family home in Istanbul for an intimate Dengbej storytelling and dinner experience. The story created for you intertwines the history of the locality, Dubrovnik renascence villas in general, the customs of the Dubrovnik countryside villages throughout history, explanation of olive oil production by the villa olive mill, interesting information about the diversity of plants, their usage & myths, biology and beauty. For families with children throughout the visit the tour is adjusted with interactive and creative content through which kids learn about nature and have fun at the same time.

Join a vibrant carnival buzzing with excitement! On Shrove Tuesday 9, February, the grand parade of the Carnevale of Tempio Pausania unfolds, culminating in the dramatic trial of Re Giorgio, accused of the city's woes. Thousands gather in the square as the float representing the king meets its fiery fate, marking the end of an exhilarating Carnevale.

After a traditional lunch, and led by local photographer Gianmario Pedroni, you'll cross streets filled with colorful guests—flag-wavers, majorettes, and musicians—each adding to the spectacle. Costumed performers dance energetically, their masks telling stories of tradition and playful anonymity.

Among the masks, you'll see the enigmatic Domino, a black cloaked mask exclusive to Tempio Pausania, used to tease friends or approach a long-desired love. You'll also meet the raucous “lu traicogghju”, echoing the carnival's wild past, and “lu linzolu cupaltatu”, a local mask created from a bedsheet.

This experience is very exclusive: Led by the official photographer of the event, Gianmario Pedroni, you will be able to access special areas closed to the public to see and photograph the parade up-close. As the son of a local float constructor, Gianmario shares insight into behind-the-scenes stories of the artisans and their work. Starting the tour at his studio allows you to see and hear the stories of his work. 

Shrove Tuesday in Tempio Pausania reaches its pinnacle with the dramatic trial of King Giorgio, culminating in the fiery end of his float. This captivating spectacle attracts thousands, seamlessly blending tradition and entertainment in a vibrant atmosphere.

A Passage Through Morocco

A Morocco 2 week itinerary from Fes to Marrakesh with culture, coast, and Atlas Mountains.

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

The Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) is one of Seville’s most iconic landmarks, situated along the banks of the Guadalquivir River. This 13th-century dodecagonal tower was originally built by the Almohads as a military watchtower and was later used to control access to the river. Its name, “Tower of Gold,” is believed to stem from the golden gleam it once reflected off the river or possibly from the gold brought from the New World that was stored in its vaults. Today, the Torre del Oro is a maritime museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Seville's rich naval history.
 Highlights of Torre del Oro:

1. Panoramic Views: Climb to the top of the tower for stunning 360-degree views of Seville’s skyline, including landmarks like the Giralda and the cathedral. The vantage point also offers a unique perspective of the Guadalquivir River.

2. Maritime Museum: The tower houses a small museum that tells the story of Seville’s naval history, featuring ancient maps, ship models, and artifacts that highlight the city’s role during Spain’s Age of Exploration.

Torre del Oro

Tanzania

"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

1. The Temple of Debod was initially built by the Kushite king Adikhalamani in Nubia, close to the religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis. It was dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun and later expanded and dedicated to Isis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
2. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several expansions and renovations. Prominent Roman emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations, adding to its historical and artistic significance.
3. In 1960, due to the Aswan High Dam's construction, UNESCO made an international call to save several historical monuments. As a token of gratitude for Spain's aid, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain. It was meticulously dismantled, transported, and reconstructed in Madrid's Parque del Oeste, opening to the public in 1972.
4. The temple, surrounded by a pool of water, comprises three main reconstructed monuments. It retains its original stone-built enclosure wall, pylon gateways, and the sanctuary of Amun. The layout and decorations provide insight into ancient Egyptian religious practices and architectural styles.
5. The temple's continued exposure to the elements has been a subject of concern. In response, Madrid's city council decided in 2020 to accelerate plans to protect and preserve this unique historical monument.

Casa Pilatos is one of our favorite places in Seville. Nestled in the historic Santa Cruz district, it’s a paragon of Andalusian architecture, blending Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles into a stunning palatial residence. It’s a 16th-century edifice that serves as a living museum, showcasing the grandeur of Sevillian nobility. Today, it remains a semi-private residence, partly inhabited by the 18th Duchess of Medinaceli and her family. Here are the Top things to check out:
1. Enter through a Renaissance-style marble gate to discover a courtyard adorned with a collection of busts from Roman emperors to Spanish kings, set against the backdrop of exquisite azulejo tiles. Santa Maria del Mar, known as the "Cathedral of La Ribera" in Barcelona, is a sterling example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture, distinguished by its harmonious proportions and serene ambiance. Completed rapidly for a medieval church, between 1329 and 1384, it maintains a stylistic purity rare for the era due to its construction within just 55 years. The church's interior, marked by its vast, open spaces and the widest column spacing of any Gothic church in Europe, creates an impression of sublime width, height, and airiness​​​​. It’s our favorite church in Barcelona, here’s why:
1: The church's interior is notably sparse in imagery, a result of damage from a fire in 1936 during anticlerical disturbances. Despite this loss, including the destruction of the Baroque retable by Deodat Casanoves and Salvador Gurri, some stained-glass windows from various periods have survived, contributing to the church's luminous atmosphere​​.
2: The basilica's design boasts very tall slender columns that are 13 meters apart, supporting three naves of equal height. This unique structural approach contributes to the church's feeling of spaciousness, with its maximum height matching its total width at 100 medieval feet​​​​.

Very different from 1000 years ago as Vikings stood here and declared the laws of the land ... the oldest continuous two weeks in the summer parliament. People heard from their leaders, settled disputes and traded.

The best part of the Golden Circle circuit, Thingvellir National Park has hiking trails, waterfalls, summer cottages for the affluent (singer Björk has a home) and the Silfra fissure divers can explore between the American and Euroasian tectonic plates.

The sky is changing color. We should leave, we tell each other ... but we are drawn to the scenery like a moth to the flame.
