Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

A guided visit to the home workshop of a family of artisans. Lunch and agua fresca at a local comedor that is en route back to Centro.

If you wish to buy pieces from the makers while in their studio, they accept credit cards, but cash pesos is always preferred. A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain

Colombia

Ericeira, a charming coastal village just 50 kilometers from Lisbon, is renowned for its scenic beauty, rich fishing heritage, and world-class surfing spots. Known as Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, Ericeira attracts surfers from all over the globe, while also offering travelers a mix of historic charm, vibrant culinary experiences, and stunning Atlantic Ocean views. With its cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, and golden cliffs, Ericeira is a gem of Portugal’s western coastline.

Highlights of Ericeira:

1. Walk through Ericeira’s old town, with its picturesque narrow streets, traditional blue-and-white buildings, and charming squares. This historic center is filled with local boutiques, cafes, and artisan shops, giving visitors a taste of local culture and creativity.

2. Ericeira’s beaches are a must-see, especially Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach, a hotspot for surfers of all levels. With consistent waves and a friendly surf culture, this beach is ideal for surfing enthusiasts and spectators alike, and it also hosts international surfing competitions each year.

3. Try fresh seafood at Ericeira’s many renowned seafood restaurants. The town’s strong fishing heritage is celebrated in dishes such as grilled sardines, octopus salad, and “caldeirada” (Portuguese fish stew), offering a true taste of the Atlantic.

4. Visit the World Surfing Reserve area, stretching from São Lourenço Beach to Empa Beach. This protected area has multiple surf breaks for different skill levels and is known for its natural beauty, drawing visitors to explore its rocky cliffs and pristine coastline.

	5.	Take in panoramic views from the scenic cliffs that surround the town. For a beautiful sunset, head to Pescadores Beach (Fishermen’s Beach).

İzmir Bird Paradise, also known as Kuş Cenneti, is a protected wetland and bird sanctuary home to over 200 bird species. Its marshes and observation towers make it an ideal destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers seeking a glimpse of rare and migratory birds.
1. The sanctuary is rich in birdlife, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons.
2. Seasonal migrations make it possible to spot rare bird species throughout the year.
3. Walking paths allow visitors to explore the wetlands without disturbing the wildlife.
4. Observation towers provide excellent views and opportunities for birdwatching.
5. It is a paradise for photographers, with vibrant bird species and scenic wetlands.
