This is a day trip journey from Guadalajara to the Western Sierra, focused on coffee, artisans, myth, and mountains, guided by an anthropologist, exploring people and place. 

You leave Guadalajara early, tracing the road west into the Western Sierra — scenic landscapes of red earth and pine slopes. Your first stop is Amacueca. Here, farmers show how cherries are hand-picked, pulped, roasted — the scent is warm and nutty. You taste a cup brewed on the spot.

The route continues to Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico of whitewashed walls and timber balconies. You wander its plaza and visit selected artisans. 

Later, at the Enigma Valleys, giant stones stand scattered. Alejandro shares local legends — of spirits, giants, storms — that have made this site both sacred and mysterious. You understand why these boulders are more than geology: they’re reminders of endurance.

It’s a full day — mountain air, conversation, cultural heritage, and a sense that Jalisco belongs to those who live its rhythm. 

Alejandro expertly connects what you see to the historical and cultural context: how geography shaped coffee in Amacueca, why Tapalpa’s craft traditions endure, and how Enigma Valleys reveal belief systems.

In Amacueca, you join growers for tastings and roasting demonstrations, you learn what the grower looks for when judging a good harvest, how scent signals readiness. In Tapalpa, Alejandro introduces artisans he selects for their quality, people he has long trusting relationships with — you see leather tanned with natural oils, clay that fires to a deep rust tone, maguey fibers hand-braided for strength. At the Enigma Valleys, surrounded by stones worn smooth by time, Alejandro recounts oral histories linking the rocks to ancient storms and deities, legends and spiritual significance, while you stand amid the same winds that shaped them.

The first stop is Amacueca, a tranquil highland town nestled in Jalisco’s Western Sierra known for its pitayas –(cactus fruit), centuries-old Catholic heritage (the oldest Catholic temple and convent in western Mexico), and emerging coffee culture. Here, faith, agriculture, and artistry have intertwined for generations.

You’ll walk through the cobbled streets to a family-run coffee farm and roastery, where the scent of roasting beans mingles with the mountain air. Here, you explore small-scale coffee plots, learn about hand-picking and roasting, and see how altitude and microclimate influence flavor.  Of course, you’ll sit for a cup brewed fresh from the local roast.



The Western Sierra de Amacueca region produces shade-grown arabica coffee with mild acidity and chocolate/nutty notes. It is one of western Mexico’s most authentic coffee regions, its small farms overshadowed by Jalisco’s more famous agave fields but no less remarkable in craftsmanship. In this stop, you step directly into that continuity — from colonial spirituality to contemporary agricultural artistry.

Your guide, an anthropologist, ties these threads together: how the first missionaries built the convent that still anchors the town; how Catholic rituals merged with indigenous cycles of rain and harvest; and how today’s farmers use traditional shade and hand-roasting techniques to sustain biodiversity and quality.

Crafts in a Pueblo Mágico

The road from Tapalpa climbs gently toward the Valle de los Enigmas, also known as the Valle de las Piedrotas — this is the highlight of the tour. Here, colossal monolithic Giant Stones stand as silent guardians in a vast natural amphitheater, inviting visitors to marvel at their intriguing shapes and legends. Each is the size of a house, weathered into shapes that seem both natural and intentional.

No one knows for certain how these stones arrived here. Geologists suggest ancient volcanic activity — basalt expelled and sculpted by erosion. Locals tell other stories: that the rocks were meteorites, or that giants once played here, leaving the stones as toys abandoned mid-game.

As you walk among the stones, Alejandro shares both science and legend — oral histories passed down through local families, theories from archaeologists, and the meanings that still endure in the stories told today. It’s an arresting final stop — a conversation between land, myth, and time itself.

His research and work have taken him across Mexico and South America – from urban neighborhoods to rural towns and indigenous communities. Now based in Guadalajara, he collaborates with a local cultural project that shares territorial routes and deep-rooted stories of the region with travelers. Alejandro brings academic insight, lived experience and a grounded respect for place. His work offers a view into how land, tradition, and identity continue to shape western Mexico today.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. By supporting this artisan and her family, you’re also helping to preserve a living legacy.

Your set meal will be a continuation of local culture at a sublime choice for traditional fare in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, which will include one mezcal or one beer person, for those who wish.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

France

This is a 2.5-hour introduction to the land, craft, and wines of a family-run estate in the Aquitaine countryside. It begins with a relaxed horseback ride through the vineyards — no experience needed. Your guide points out grape varieties and how slope, soil, and season shape each vine, while moving at an easy rhythm between vine rows that stretch across the landscape.

Back at the château, you’ll tour the production area and barrel cellar, discovering how heritage and craft are intertwined. Then, you'll taste four wines selected to highlight different expressions of terroir and show how choices in the cellar shape character in the glass.

The experience ends with a quiet picnic — regional specialties and a bottle of wine that the hosts will set up in the vines or on the estate grounds for you to enjoy on your own. This experience, shorter than Nathalie's 4-hour "Saddles and Cellars", is designed for travelers who want a vineyard experience without committing to a full afternoon.

Step into a historic bookbinding workshop near Cagliari, Sardinia, where Gaia will welcome you into her family’s 50-year-old artisan space. In this hands-on experience, you'll craft your own travel notebook using traditional bookbinding techniques and authentic Sardinian fabrics.

No prior skills are needed—just a desire to create something by hand and take home local stories and memories. From selecting textiles to stitching pages by hand with a needle and thread, you'll be guided through each step of this ancient craft. A passionate traveler, Gaia has explored Eastern Europe and the Maghreb solo since 2018, drawing inspiration from places like Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, and beyond. Chile

This 6.5-hour, truly exclusive experience intertwines poetry, cuisine, and dialogue in a highly personalized setting in Santiago, Chile. Starting with a sensory journey through the La Vega and Mercado Central food markets, you will procure the freshest ingredients for the grand finale. But before then—a rendezvous at the former address of Chile's most famous denizen of the past. Now a museum, La Chascona was where Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda worked magic both as a writer and gourmand.

The main course of the experience is served at the home of your host in Barrio Bellavista, where the morning's haul is transformed into Caldillo de Congrio (conger chowder), accompanied by premium Chilean wines. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

İzmir Wildlife Park

Staying at the Inn at Death Valley, we thought we would be able to get up just before sunrise and make a dash over to Zabriskie Point. In hind sight, we should have woken up a good 60 minutes earlier, since the viewpoint was packed with people as we got there. 


The stunning views of the badlands slowly fill up with yellow, orange, purple and brown colors - and every hue in between - as the sun comes up, totally makes up for the early rise. Once the sun has finished painting the badlands, it reaches out to color in the Panamint Range across the valley with gorgeous pinks and purples. If you want to avoid the crowds, do the 2.5 mile Badlands Loop hike. Right after the walk, you can drive the short 3 mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon loop drive before returning to Stovepipe Wells for breakfast. 

We had been told that the Death Valley National Park is all about extremes - and the Zabriskie Point is a visual representation of that.

Painting with Light

Chile’s Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile, stretching over 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) in the heart of the Atacama Desert. Framed by the Andes Mountains and home to spectacular salt-crusted landscapes and vibrant flamingo-filled lagoons, this surreal environment offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike. The salt flat’s cracked surface, mineral-rich pools, and reflections of distant volcanoes create a breathtaking scene, especially at sunrise or sunset.


1. Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is one of the best places to spot Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos, which feed in the shallow waters.

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.
