This ceramics experience takes place just outside the adobe town of San Pedro de Atacama, in a quiet natural setting with views of volcanoes and the Martian-like plains of the world’s driest desert. A short 10-minute drive brings you to the outdoor workshop site, where host Antonia welcomes you with all the materials needed to create your own stoneware piece using ancestral Atacameño clay.

Throughout the session, you’ll shape a personal keepsake inspired by the desert’s landscapes, plants, and animals—guided by Antonia, who shares insights into the cultural and historical roots of ceramics in the Atacama region. The workshop encourages a slower, more mindful engagement with place and craft.

No previous ceramics experience is needed; Antonia offers step-by-step support. Afterward, your piece will be glazed and kiln-fired, then shipped to your preferred address. The session also includes a light breakfast shared with your host Antonia in this striking desert setting.

Antonia Del Pedregal is a ceramic artist based in San Pedro de Atacama. She has lived in the adobe town for six years, spending the past four creating sculptures and functional pieces inspired by the desert landscape. Antonia preserves Indigenous molding techniques while working with a local clay she has adapted to suit her own style and needs.

Before following her heart north, Antonia briefly worked in advertising and later as a pastry chef in Puerto Varas. Although cooking remains one of her passions, she found her true calling in San Pedro after a chance encounter with ceramics and stoneware. Primarily self-taught, Antonia draws inspiration from the stark landscapes, resilient nature, and connections she has built with the Atacameño community. She is passionate about sharing her craft with visitors, offering a window into the land and traditions that shape her work.

Embark on this private walking tour of Istanbul, from the majestic Chora Museum to the historic neighborhoods of Balat and Fener. 

Originally a Byzantine church, the Chora Museum is celebrated for its exquisite mosaics and frescoes that depict intricate biblical scenes. After a coffee break, you'll head to the museum, admiring these masterpieces of Byzantine art. Then you'll move on to the ancient City Walls of Constantinople, where you will witness the enduring strength of fortifications that once shielded the capital of an empire. 

The journey continues to Tekfur Palace, which was once the highest point of Constantinople, overlooking the Golden Horn. This positioning made it a crucial point for defense and governance during the late Byzantine period.

This intimate experience invites you inside the home workshop of a renowned family of artisans in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. Their work is whimsical, tactile and deeply personal—guided by tradition, memory and resilience.

You'll witness how the creations are meticulously crafted using traditional techniques and unique vision. The pieces, celebrated for their intricate details and cultural significance, have garnered international acclaim, and are featured in museums, documentaries and books.

You'll meet the artists, learn about their process, and witness how their hands bring form to feeling. The visit includes time to explore their collection and workshop, as well conversation about how creativity can be a lifeline in the face of adversity. Afterward, you'll stop at a popular roadside comedor for handmade Oaxacan dishes and agua fresca—simple, local, full of flavor.

Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

This experience accommodates a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 people. What’s Included: Transportation from Oaxaca de Juárez to this Zapotec community and back again. A guided visit to the home workshop of a family of artisans. Lunch and agua fresca at a local comedor that is en route back to Centro. 

We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, water and your camera or phone, if you'd like to take photos. If you wish to buy pieces from the makers while in their studio, they accept credit cards, but cash pesos is always preferred. That said, there's no expectation to buy anything outside of what's included in the experience.

Pick up and drop off will be at the front of the Italian Coffee Company at Lic Manuel Ruiz 300A, Reforma, 68050, Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Your host will be there waiting for you 15 minutes before the departure time to enable a prompt departure at the time stated on the booking. Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.
