In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia raised his cross upon this volcanic outcrop, thus founding Santiago as a bastion of empire. This is a full-day photography journey to the high Andean salt flats on the Chilean Altiplano. Located in the northeastern corner of the Atacama Desert near the border with Bolivia, Quepiaco, Quisquiro, and Tara are among the most visually striking and ecologically unique landscapes in the region. These salt flats—salars—sit at elevations between 4,000-4,500m (13,000-14,800 feet) above sea level and are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Bounded by volcanoes and inhabited by flamingos and vicuñas, this is a remarkable setting for both landscape and wildlife photography.

At each salt flat, Mirko will explain the geological features of the wetlands and salt crusts, point out native wildlife, and provide practical instruction on how to photograph it. Because of the high elevation, this tour is best scheduled for your third day or later in San Pedro de Atacama, after you’ve had time to acclimatize.

This experience starts with a thrilling drive through the Martian landscapes of the Atacama Desert. This is a prime opportunity for quizzing Mirko about the region: it's natural history, its cultural legacy, and its wildlife. Salar de Quepiaco, Salar de Quisquiro, and Salar de Tara straddle the border between Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. They provide a habitat for all three species of South American flamingos (Andean, Chilean, and James’s) as well as llamas, vicuñas, and Andean foxes. Philippe Mevel is a Paris-based antiques specialist and art dealer who leads private visits through the Saint-Ouen flea markets, antique boutiques, and art galleries. He trained in Switzerland and France before moving to the United States in 1999.

From 2000 to 2006 he worked with Gasiunasen Fine Arts in Palm Beach, collaborating with prominent collectors. Since 2007 he has worked independently as an art advisor and dealer, with acquisitions that have included works by Picasso and Chagall.
