This full-day photography excursion takes you to two contrasting natural wonders in the Atacama Desert of Chile: the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) and Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoiris). It is hosted by Mirko, a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and wildlife and a licensed guide. Upon leaving San Pedro de Atacama, Mirko will pull over at one of his favorite viewpoints to appreciate the sunrise over the Andes mountain range. While sipping coffee and sharing a breakfast of marraqueta bread rolls, you'll warm up your photography skills for the day by shooting the soft morning light. 

You will then explore the ravines and dunes of Moon Valley, coming to understand how it earned its name. After lunch at a local restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, you'll head to the Cordillera Domeyko to study the 3,000-year-old petroglyphs of Yerba Buenas before ending the day in the multi-colored Rainbow Valley.

Mirko has selected these two locations for their contrasts. The morning is spent exploring the salt mines, rugged amphitheaters, and sweeping dunes of Moon Valley where Mirko will explain the geological anomalies. By visiting early in the day, you're spared the inevitable afternoon crowds and have a more relaxed photographic experience. 

The afternoon takes place at two of the Atacama Desert's hidden treasures: Yerbas Buenas and Rainbow Valley. Yerbas Buenas (Hierbas Buenas) is an open-air exhibit of pre-Columbian rock carvings which provide insight into ancient Indigenous cultures. Mirko will explain the symbolism behind the petroglyphs and how these served as more than pretty pictures! In Rainbow Valley, the mountains are painted hues of red, green, white, yellow, and blue as a result of the oxidation of different mineral deposits over millions of years. You will arrive in time to catch the soft light of the waning sun. Lunch in town serves as a way to chat informally with Mirko.

Enchanted: Lokrum Island

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

Palazzo Massimo

Cádiz, Spain, is home to the Cádiz Museum, a fascinating institution that chronicles the city’s 3,000-year history, making it one of the most important museums in Andalusia. Located in Plaza de Mina, this museum houses an impressive collection of Phoenician artifacts, Roman sculptures, Baroque paintings, and Andalusian folk art. Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, has a rich and diverse past, and the museum brings it to life through archaeological discoveries and artistic masterpieces.

Cadiz Museum

Argentina

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

Cycling through Buenos Aires

Colombia

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Museum, one of the most renowned museums dedicated to preserving and showcasing Greek folk art, culture, and traditions. Peloponnesian Folklore Museum

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Chile’s Tara Salt Flats (Salar de Tara), located in the Atacama Desert, is a breathtaking, otherworldly landscape of vast white salt plains, towering rock formations, and flamingo-filled lagoons. Situated at an altitude of over 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), this remote destination offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers. The journey to Salar de Tara, through volcanic plains and surreal rock formations, is just as spectacular as the destination itself.


1. Expansive salt plains, stretching endlessly beneath the deep blue sky, create a dramatic and surreal contrast for photography.

2. The Monks of the Pacana (Los Monjes de la Pacana)—towering volcanic rock formations sculpted by erosion—resemble silent guardians in the desert.

3. Lagunas filled with flamingos, where Andean, James, and Chilean flamingos wade through shallow waters, offering incredible wildlife photography opportunities.

4. Panoramic views of the Andes and surrounding volcanoes, including the mighty Licancabur Volcano, provide an unforgettable backdrop.

5. Remote, untouched nature, far from tourist crowds, makes this an ideal spot for peaceful exploration and reflection.

Visitor Tip: Due to the high altitude and rough terrain, it’s best to visit with a guided 4x4 tour. Bring warm layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water to combat the harsh desert conditions.
