This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. This is also a hotspot for puna plovers and Andean avocets. Visiting quieter canyons and wetlands allows for a mindful connection with birds and studying their behaviors.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Her expertise lies in the region's natural history, from its intricate geology and flora to fascinating wildlife and, in particular, its avifauna. This is enhanced by her active participation in local conservation and environmental education projects. 

Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. She has also deepened her knowledge by attending ROC (La Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile) courses in Bird Physiology, Pelagic Birds, and Shore Birds Conservation. Japan

On this fascinating photowalk of a lesser-known Tokyo neighborhood, photographer Lee Chapman guides you through the changing streets he has been documenting through his photographs for over a decade. Far from the steel and glass monuments of Shinjuku and Shibuya, this low-lying neighborhood in the shadow of Tokyo Skytree has been slowly evolving away from its working-class identity.

Lee introduces you to the main characters of his story, buildings and businesses that have survived decades in this neighborhood. Others survive only in memory, memorialized by Lee's beautiful images that he shows you as you walk, sometimes standing in front of the place that no longer exists.

Lucila Quevedo is a ceramic artist from Mendoza who has been teaching classes in her workshop for seven years. She is passionate about the craft of ceramics and focuses on artisanal techniques. Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. The largest mammals on earth have earned their reputation as the most beautiful, intelligent, and impressive creatures. If you watch the ocean at migration time (either from the shore or on a boat tour), you'll see baby whales leaping and maybe even hear mother whales calling their families together. The baby-whale season is from January until the end of April.

But the Pacific coast is not only known for whales. It's just as beautiful to watch sea turtles hatch. Dom Luís I Bridge

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Sultanahmet Park offers one of the city’s most iconic and photogenic settings. Nestled between two architectural giants—the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque—the park serves as both a peaceful resting place and a central point for exploring the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

2. Throughout the park, well-kept walking paths and benches invite visitors to slow down, relax, and take in the atmosphere of Istanbul’s most historic district.

3. With tulips blooming in spring and colorful flower beds year-round, Sultanahmet Park adds a vibrant and natural contrast to the surrounding stone domes and minarets.

Sultanahmet Park

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Teos Ancient City is a peaceful archaeological site blending history and nature. Once a thriving cultural hub in ancient Ionia, it now offers well-preserved ruins, including a grand theater and the Temple of Dionysus. Its tranquil surroundings, shaded by olive groves, make it a serene spot for exploration.

Teos Ancient City

Karaköy, one of Istanbul’s oldest port neighborhoods, has undergone a vibrant transformation, becoming a hub of creativity and modern culture while retaining its historic charm. Located near the Galata Bridge and along the Bosphorus, this district offers an eclectic mix of street art, trendy eateries, and boutique stores. Karaköy’s energy is contagious, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to experience Istanbul’s dynamic blend of old and new.

1. Street Art Wonderland: Stroll through the district to find walls adorned with bold, colorful murals and graffiti by local and international artists. Each piece adds a touch of modern flair to Karaköy’s historic streets.
2. Boutique Shopping: Explore a variety of independent stores and designer boutiques offering everything from handmade jewelry and stylish clothing to unique home decor items.
3. Trendy Cafes and Eateries: Karaköy is a foodie’s paradise, with artisanal bakeries, chic coffee shops, and restaurants serving innovative takes on Turkish and international cuisine. Don’t miss a stop at Karaköy Güllüoğlu for world-famous baklava.

5. The Waterfront Promenade: Enjoy stunning views of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn from Karaköy’s waterfront, especially at sunset, when the cityscape glows with golden hues.

Visitor Tip: Visit during late afternoon to enjoy shopping and end your day with dinner overlooking the Bosphorus. Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring the cobblestone streets!

Karaköy Neighborhood

This is the view of The Red City, Marrakech’s medina from the panoramic terrace of Maison de la Photographie.

The museum of photographs is fascinating in how it came about – two famous photographers, Patrick Menac’h and Hamid Mergani, brought together their common passion for vintage Moroccan photography, and pooled their photos for the public to admire. Here I realize how black-and-white photos can dramatize the light-and-shadow effects in the medina.

From the terrace, you can have a glass of mint tea, and wonder about the thousands of satellite dishes that dominate the view. 

It’s peaceful here. On a clear day, you can see the snow-clad High Atlas Mountains. But you can’t see the chaos of Djemaa el-Fna, or hear shouts of ‘Balek!’ whenever donkey-carts come through laden with heavy goods. You can’t see the ‘hand of Fatima’ good-luck symbols painted on the carts after they have ambled past you. Or count the number of chickens being transported on the back of a groaning Vespa.

Pausing in the Frenzy

Ria Formosa Natural Park, located in the Algarve region of Portugal, is a unique coastal lagoon renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity.
