This Spanish celebration for the Holy Week dates to the 16th century, and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn Catholic processions wind through narrow streets, organized by around 70 of Seville's church brotherhoods, featuring floats adorned with intricate statues of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and scenes from the Passion of Christ known as misterios. In Seville, it was tradition to enjoy these festivities from privileged private balconies owned by local families, offering a splendid vantage point. A local Seville "ambassador" will provide insights into the traditions, history, and significance of Semana Santa. Immerse yourself in this captivating spectacle for about 90 minutes to observe one or two processions.

The Semana Santa processions have grand pasos, or floats, intricately depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ. We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. This is where the tour starts and ends. Burano is a charming and colorful island in the Venetian Lagoon, known for its brightly painted houses and long-standing tradition of lace-making. Located about 7 kilometers from Venice, a 25 minute water taxi (to be arranged via your Venice hotel) or a 40-minute vaporetto (water bus) ride can transport you to this picturesque locale from Venice. Historically, Burano was a fishing village, and this heritage is evident in its culture and cuisine, with seafood being a prominent feature in local dishes.

You can also stay overnight at Venissa or Casa Burano. It's amazing to wake up early on the island before the tourists get here and wander around.

Japan

In this experience, your guide Rio will introduce you to Asagaya, a quiet neighborhood of western Tokyo where the pace of change has been much slower than in the central city. This is Rio’s neighborhood where he’s learned the names and faces of shopkeepers, artists, and regular customers and is happy to introduce them to visitors.

You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends. 

You’ll enjoy a retro-style lunch at an old shop specializing in okonomiyaki, a savory pancake before exploring the unique shops along the shotengai including a knife shop, tea shop, and a second-hand kimono shop. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with shopkeepers, and learn more about the rich history of the Asagaya area.

You will conclude your tour at a standing sake bar for drinks and conversation, and perhaps share a friendly “kampai!” cheers with new friends.

The heart of this experience is about people – not just the people you travel with but also those you meet along your journey. Your host Rio has deep roots in this neighborhood. He’ll introduce you to the shopkeepers and local artisans he has known for years, and strangers from the neighborhood he only just met. 

You’ll also taste freshly made taiyaki or dorayaki — nostalgic treats filled with sweet bean paste that remain beloved staples of Tokyo street life. Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

This avifauna safari is designed exclusively for birders, ornithophiles, and twitchers at all stages on their mission to encounter the world's rarest and most unique species. It all starts with the host, Valeria, who is a fountain of knowledge about the Atacama's fauna and whose passion for the desert's fragile ecosystems is unbridled. Valeria knows that birding requires patience, so her tour is delivered at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for you, the birder, to experience the joy of mindful discovery. 

While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. This is also a hotspot for puna plovers and Andean avocets. Visiting quieter canyons and wetlands allows for a mindful connection with birds and studying their behaviors.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”
