This is a scenic day hike across the Kik Plateau, perched at approximately 1,800 meters in the High Atlas Mountains. The trek offers sweeping views over terraced farmland, Lake Takerkoust, and distant peaks, including Mount Toubkal. 

Starting from Asni, the route winds through traditional Berber villages built from earth and stone, where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Along the way, you’ll stop for tea with a local family and enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the plateau, surrounded by olive groves and open sky.

This hike is ideal for those who’ve already seen the classic Atlas mountain routes and want to explore the landscape further while engaging with the local communities. 

The walk takes 5-6 hours with stops and is best done in spring or autumn, when the plateau is green and the light is sharp. Though not technically difficult, there are some steady inclines and exposed terrain, so good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

The Kik Plateau offers an expansive, open landscape that contrasts with the steeper, more rugged trails of the central High Atlas. Its distinctive limestone outcroppings and gently undulating terrain give you a different kind of hiking experience—one defined by wide horizons and silence. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Cadiz Museum

Portugal’s Rota Vicentina is a spectacular network of coastal and inland hiking trails along the rugged southwestern coastline of the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Stretching for over 750 km (466 miles), these well-marked trails pass through stunning cliffs, wild beaches, rolling sand dunes, and charming fishing villages, making it one of Europe’s most breathtaking long-distance walking routes. The Rota Vicentina is divided into two main paths: the Fishermen’s Trail, which hugs the dramatic coastline, and the Historical Way, which winds through cork forests, rural farmland, and traditional villages.

Rota Vicentina Coastal Walks

Portugal’s Marvão Castle, perched atop the Serra de São Mamede at 860 meters (2,821 feet) above sea level, offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Portugal. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, this medieval fortress was a key defensive stronghold, guarding the frontier for centuries. Baroque: Dubrovnik Cathedral

The Brancacci Chapel, tucked away in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, is renowned for its frescoes. These masterpieces, primarily by Masaccio and Masolino, mark a pivotal moment in the history of art, showcasing the early Renaissance's break from Gothic conventions - a must-visit for art lovers: 
1 - The Brancacci Chapel's walls are adorned with frescoes that revolutionized Renaissance art. Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Sant’Antioco Island

Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to Templo Mayor, the heart of the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán. Discovered beneath the Zócalo (main square) in the 1970s, this archaeological site and museum showcases the remains of the Aztecs' most sacred temple, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli (god of war) and Tlaloc (god of rain). Walking through the ruins, visitors can imagine the grandeur of the Aztec empire before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

Templo Mayor

Finland

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.
