Semana Santa in Seville dates to 16th century and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn processions wind through narrow streets, organized by 70 of Seville’s church brotherhoods carrying large pasos — elaborate floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ or honoring the Virgin Mary. Candles, music, incense and the steady rhythm of processions transform the city throughout the week. In Seville, it has long been customary for local families to watch the processions from private balconies along the route.

The experience lasts about 90 minutes. From this vantage point, and depending on the day, you observe one or two processions pass below while a Sevillian host explains the traditions, symbolism and structure of the processions.

Semana Santa is a deeply rooted tradition. The pasos carried through the streets contain sculptures that are centuries old. Beneath them walk costaleros, who train throughout the year to carry the heavy structures while remaining hidden beneath the float. Around them move the nazarenos, penitents in tall hoods whose presence has been part of the procession for over five centuries. Watching from a balcony is a unique experience. From above you see the formation and choreography of the procession, and its rhythm of movement.

In Seville, balcony viewing during Semana Santa developed because the streets are extremely narrow, the processions move slowly, and crowds became difficult to navigate—even for locals. Families along the route began opening their balconies to relatives and guests. Today many of those same buildings still host balcony viewing along the official procession route. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

For most visitors, the Algarve conjures images of beaches and seafood. But João’s Algarve is more textured—what he calls the “poetic Algarve.” He cites writers like Sofia de Melo Breyner Andresen and José Saramago, who captured the soul of the region in images of sunsets, fruit, wind, and silence. For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Travelers are interested in how we live, how we spend the day, what we do.” This itinerary is João’s answer to that challenge: an immersive route where nature, food, craft, and memory guide the pace.

This 14-day Peloponnese road trip is designed for travelers who enjoy long scenic drives and the freedom of shaping each day on the road. It unfolds through constantly changing landscapes, from urban Athens to fortified coastlines, mountain interiors, remote peninsulas, and fertile wine country. Guided experiences anchor key moments, while the drive itself connects regions, histories, and atmospheres across southern Greece.
DAY 1 – ATHENS TO NAFPLIO | The journey begins in Athens with a guided exploration of the Acropolis, uncovering layers of history. In the afternoon, you collect the car and head south, leaving the city behind. A stop at the Corinth Canal marks your entry into the Peloponnese before arriving in Nafplio by early evening.
DAY 2 – NAFPLIO | Late morning brings a guided wine-focused experience that deepens your understanding of Nafplio and its surrounding region. The afternoon is open for independent exploration along the waterfront or through the old town. With no driving today, the pace resets before longer distances ahead.
DAY 3 – EPIDAURUS FROM NAFPLIO | You travel inland on a guided day trip to Epidaurus, focusing on sacred landscapes and the connection between theater and healing in the ancient world. After lunch nearby, you return to Nafplio in the afternoon, balancing travel with depth.
DAY 4 – NAFPLIO TO SPARTA | Leaving the coast behind, you drive into the interior of the Peloponnese. Olive groves, mountain roads, and quiet villages shape the route toward Lakonia. Arrival in Sparta by early afternoon allows time to settle in after the transition.
DAY 5 – MYSTRAS | With no long drive today, the focus shifts to exploration near your base. You spend the day moving through the hillside ruins of Mystras, discovering its layered Byzantine past before returning to the countryside near Sparta.
DAY 6 – SPARTA TO MONEMVASIA | You head southeast toward the sea as the terrain opens and the coast comes into view. The drive culminates in the dramatic arrival at Monemvasia, where the afternoon is spent on foot among stone paths and elevated viewpoints.
DAY 7 – ELAFONISSOS | In the morning, you drive to the coast and take a short ferry to Elafonissos. The shift in scale is immediate, from fortified town to open shoreline. The day is left unstructured, shaped by water, light, and rest.
DAY 8 – MONEMVASIA TO AREOPOLI | One of the journey’s longest drives takes you north into the Mani Peninsula. Remote landscapes and stone-built settlements define the route, with a pause in Limeni before continuing inland to Areopoli.
DAY 9 – MANI COAST | Today is dedicated to driving along Mani's coastline. You follow the road toward Cape Tenaro, stopping at villages, chapels, and coves as the landscape opens to the sea. The day forms a loop, returning to Areopoli by evening.
DAY 10 – AREOPOLI TO KALAMATA | Leaving Mani behind, you drive west through olive groves and cultivated plains. The road widens as you approach Kalamata, where arrival around midday leaves time to explore the town or walk along the seafront.
DAY 11 – KALAMATA TO PYLOS | You continue along the Messinian coast, stopping at Koroni and Methoni to explore their seaside fortresses. By late afternoon, you reach Pylos, overlooking the calm waters of Navarino Bay.
DAY 12 – PYLOS TO OLYMPIA | The route turns inland again, trading coastline for rolling countryside. Arrival in Olympia around midday allows time to orient yourself before a quieter evening.
DAY 13 – OLYMPIA TO NEMEA | A scenic drive crosses Arcadia’s mountainous interior, with stops in Dimitsana and Stemnitsa revealing stone village life. By evening, vineyards replace mountain roads as you arrive in Nemea.
DAY 14 – NEMEA TO ATHENS | The day begins with a guided experience in Nemea, combining archaeology, wine, and a relaxed lunch.
