Frank Villani is a certified sommelier whose passion for Italian wine sparked during his university years, leading him to complete his sommelier education in 2009. A special tour to see how Seville artisans use centuries-old techniques and lifelong expertise to produce exquisite pieces for religious events and rituals. 

Act 1: Bordado (Embroidery): Visit the workshop of a renowned artisan to witness the meticulous restoration of ceremonial vestments and regalia for processions of the Catholic fraternities in southern Spain, mainly centred around Semana Santa (Holy Week).

Act 2: Orfebrería (Silversmithing and Goldsmithing): You’ll meet a highly skilled orfebrero (silversmith) and learn about the various stages in creating elaborate embossed silver pieces such as candlesticks and decorative panels for pasos (floats) which carry the religious statues in the Semana Santa processions, all chiseled by hand.

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Aldeia José Franco, located in the village of Sobreiro between Lisbon and Mafra, is an enchanting open-air museum that brings Portuguese rural life and traditions vividly to life. Created by potter José Franco in the 1940s, this miniaturized village features authentic replicas of old Portuguese homes, mills, workshops, and shops that reflect the customs and everyday lives of the Portuguese countryside.

Highlights of Aldeia José Franco:

1. Explore a charming miniature village that recreates rural Portuguese life with attention to detail. You’ll find scaled-down houses, churches, schools, and windmills, each showing different aspects of traditional Portuguese architecture and the everyday lives of past generations.

Soğanlı Valley offers a peaceful escape into nature and history, far from the more crowded tourist spots. Its serene trails and ancient rock-cut churches make it a haven for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
1. Hiking Trails: Enjoy well-maintained trails that wind through a lush valley dotted with rock formations and caves. The quiet surroundings make this a meditative experience.
2. Rock-Cut Churches: Discover centuries-old churches carved into the cliffs, featuring faded but intricate frescoes that reflect the valley’s spiritual heritage.
3. Secluded Atmosphere: Relish the tranquility of this off-the-beaten-path location, ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat into nature.
