During the rainy season (January to April), the Capo Nieddu waterfall plunges directly into the sea 40 meters down a steep cliff, creating a breathtaking spectacle. This two-hour experience takes place in the studio of celebrated tango dancer and choreographer Gisela Vidal. Through a private workshop, you’ll explore the fundamentals of tango—from musicality and posture to the nonverbal connection between lead and follow. Gisela’s approach makes space for both technique and emotion.

After dancing, you’ll sit with Gisela over mate (herbal infusion) or wine to reflect on tango’s evolution, her global career and the emotional qualities that make tango a living art. The final part of the experience offers a window into Gisela’s creative practice as a jewelry designer. You’ll explore how tango’s gestures, shapes, and symbolism have influenced her tango-inspired jewelry—shaped by the same rhythm, elegance and emotional nuance she brings to her dance. She’ll share how her designs emerged from her years on stage as a creative response to the movement and symbolism of tango. Each guest receives a small pin designed by Gisela to mark the moment.

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip.

During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

This walk explores a different side of Florence, away from the museum circuit and into San Niccolò and the Oltrarno, where medieval streets, artisan workshops, wartime history, and Renaissance churches still shape life today. With Guido, you begin in San Niccolò, among small workshops and streets known for perfume makers and local trades. You stop for a hot slice of pizza and a glass of wine at a neighborhood bakery before heading towards the river.

Along the Lungarno, Guido traces the Second World War through this part of the city, explaining what happened here during the German occupation and why Ponte Vecchio, the gold trade, and the Vasari Corridor matter to that story. From there, the route continues into the Oltrarno, through streets overlooking the Arno and towards Palazzo Pitti, Santa Felicita, and Santo Spirito. The walk ends with the friars’ cloister and Michelangelo’s wooden crucifix, where Guido introduces the artist’s anatomical studies.

In Lalibela, I am moved by the devotion and faith of pilgrims who have walked for weeks, and hundreds of miles across the country, to celebrate Genna - Ethiopia’s Christmas - on January 7. Here, the year is 2011, since Ethiopia still observes a pre-Julian calendar. I am immediately taken in by the idea of being 7 years younger, albeit for a fleeting moment.

Pilgrims arrive early - between midnight to 5 am -  to get a prized standing spot inside the tiny but iconic Biete Gyorgis. As I watch pilgrims read from their bibles, often from inside their shroud, using a candle or torch, I realize I’ve never seen such fervor in worship.

By 6:30 am, Biete Giyorgis, the iconic rock-hewn church of Lalibela, has no more standing space, so these pilgrims huddle outside and around trees and pray from their copies of the Bible, guided by the chanting from the church, that fills the air with spirituality. It’s poetic and beautiful.

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and history. This church complex and Dominican convent are globally renowned for housing Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, "The Last Supper," within its refectory. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, it continues to draw global visitors. Key highlights:
1 - The foundation of Santa Maria delle Grazie dates back to 1459, when Count Gaspare Vimercati donated land to the Dominican friars of Sant'Eustorgio. The construction of the convent and church commenced in 1463, under the chief architect Guiniforte Solari. Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, later played a pivotal role in expanding and beautifying the complex, transforming it into a mausoleum for the Sforza family. 
2 - The church features seven chapels dedicated to the Virgin of Graces, adorned with artworks like Antonello da Messina's sculptures and frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari. The church's northern side houses the ancient Chapel delle Grazie and the library, while the southern side boasts the refectory with da Vinci's fresco and Montorfano's "The Crucifixion." 
3 - Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper": This is the centerpiece of the church's appeal. Painted between 1495 and 1497, this iconic mural has endured time, including ham-fisted restorations and war damage. The painting depicts Christ revealing a forthcoming betrayal, a scene etched with horror and disbelief. Despite its deterioration over time, recent restorations have revived its colors and details.
4 - The church's neighborhood is a treasure trove of history and culture. It's close to Milan's Triennale, Castello Sforzesco, and other significant sites like the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio and the Archaeological museum.

Santa Maria delle Grazie

Chile’s Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is one of the best places in the Atacama Desert to see flamingos in their natural habitat. Located within the vast Salar de Atacama, this shallow, mineral-rich lagoon attracts three species of flamingos—Chilean, Andean, and James’s flamingos—along with other unique birdlife. The salt-crusted landscape, mirror-like waters, and distant Andes Mountains create a truly surreal and unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise or sunset.


1. Flamingo spotting – Watch hundreds of flamingos wading gracefully through the shallow waters, feeding on microscopic algae and crustaceans.

2. Breathtaking reflections – The lagoon’s still waters create stunning mirror-like reflections of the flamingos, the deep blue sky, and the snow-capped Andes.

3. Salt-crusted terrain – Walk along designated paths through the unique, rugged landscape of the Atacama salt flats, which stretch as far as the eye can see.

4. Other bird species – Look out for Andean avocets, puna plovers, and other rare high-altitude birds that thrive in this extreme environment.

5. Spectacular sunsets – The lagoon transforms at dusk, with the sky turning shades of pink, orange, and purple, making for breathtaking photography.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and most active flamingo sightings. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun is intense, and respect the marked trails to help preserve the fragile ecosystem.

Tanzania

"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

Walking with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen of the Makgadikgadi Plains in the Central Kalahari, quintessential hunter-gatherers, I learned several things that I hope never to have to use - how to pronounce first names that are laden with clicks, collect plants for medicinal recipes, dig for scorpions, and make a fire with twigs and leaves.

Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Thanks to Jack’s Camp for organizing this visit, they have longstanding connections with the local people.

Walking with Zu/’hoasi

Valencia, Spain, is home to Gulliver Park (Parque Gulliver), a one-of-a-kind playground where visitors of all ages can experience the world as a Lilliputian.
