Enchanted: Lokrum Island

Rising from the desert plains like a vision from another time, Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved ksars (fortified villages). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning earthen settlement along the former trans-Saharan trade route has been a backdrop for countless films and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. With its towering mudbrick kasbahs, labyrinthine alleys, and breathtaking mountain views, Aït Benhaddou is a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts.

1. A walk through the ancient ksar winds past traditional mudbrick homes, narrow alleyways, and merchant stalls, offering a glimpse into centuries-old Moroccan architecture and way of life.

2. A steep climb to the granary at the top rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and the winding Ounila River, making it a perfect spot for photography.

3. A visit to a family home inside the ksar provides an intimate look at how locals maintain and preserve these historic structures, keeping Berber traditions alive.

Aït Benhaddou

Monolithos Beach, located on the eastern coast of Santorini near the airport, is a quiet and family-friendly destination ideal for relaxation. Known for its soft black sand and shallow waters, this beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying a peaceful day away from the island’s busier spots. With its laid-back atmosphere and convenient amenities, Monolithos Beach is a great choice for families and travelers seeking tranquility. 
1. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for swimming and safe for families with children, offering a stress-free beach experience. 
2. The soft black sand typical of Santorini’s volcanic beaches provides a comfortable place to relax under the sun. 
3. There are organized sections with sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as quieter, unspoiled areas for those seeking privacy. 
4. Beachside tavernas and cafés serve fresh seafood and local dishes, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal or snack with a view. 
5. The area features sports facilities, including a playground and volleyball courts, adding to its appeal for families and active travelers. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 2–3 hours at Monolithos Beach for a leisurely swim and relaxation. It’s less crowded than Santorini’s more famous beaches, so it’s a great option for a laid-back outing. Bring water shoes for comfort on the volcanic sand, and enjoy a meal at one of the nearby tavernas.

Jamaica

1942: Errol Flynn popularised rafting down the river Rio Grande in Jamaica on bamboo rafts, made of long logs bound together. Fast forward: I'm on a raft for a 3-hour ride and sensory overload: ferns, birds, rapids, butterflies, serenading raft captain. But here’s my favorite part —

After an hour on the river, we dock at Belinda’s Riverside Restaurant, a rustic gem nestled by the Rio Grande. How does this place even exist in the middle of nowhere? Turns out Belinda and team hike a couple of hours across the hills, ingredients in tow, to set up shop each time, serving up Jamaican-style curry goat and fish (take your pick: fried, steamed, or escoveitched). Prepared with love and served alongside rice or bammy. One of my best meals in Jamaica. Call ahead to make sure Belinda’s is open on the day you visit.

Nestled in the Atlas Mountains, Ouzoud Waterfalls is one of Morocco’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Plunging over 100 meters into a lush canyon, these multi-tiered falls create a stunning contrast between the red rock cliffs, green olive groves, and the misty waters below. A favorite destination for nature lovers and photographers, Ouzoud offers scenic hiking trails, boat rides, and the chance to spot playful Barbary macaques. Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, this spectacular waterfall is a must-visit.

1. A hiking trail to the base of the falls winds through olive groves and offers breathtaking viewpoints, making it a rewarding trek with stunning photo opportunities.

2. A boat ride across the turquoise pool takes visitors close to the cascades, where the mist and roaring water create an exhilarating experience.

3. A colony of wild Barbary macaques inhabits the surrounding forest, often seen playing in the trees or approaching visitors in search of snacks.

4. A series of traditional cafés along the river provides a peaceful setting to enjoy a Moroccan meal while listening to the soothing sound of cascading water.

5. A rainbow effect in the mist appears on sunny days, adding to the magical atmosphere and making it a dream location for photographers.

Technopolis City of Athens

San Giusto Castle, a historic fortress in Trieste, stands majestically on the hill of the same name. Built on the ruins of a Venetian castle, its origins date back to the 15th century. The castle offers a vivid retelling of Trieste's history, from Roman times to the present day. Roughly 300 years older than Miramare Castle, it offers a panoramic view of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding mountains​​. Why visit?
1 - Architectural Grandeur: The castle, a blend of medieval and renaissance architecture, showcases the transformation of Trieste through different historical periods. It features an array of rooms, including the 15th-century Captain's House, the Sala Caprin, and the late-Gothic Cappella di San Giorgio, each narrating a unique aspect of Trieste's past.
2 - Walk Through History: The castle grounds host the Tergestino Lapidarium, with inscriptions, sculptures, and fragments of Roman architecture. The panoramic terrace and the vast Cortile delle Milizie (Militia Courtyard) offer breathtaking views of the city and the Gulf of Trieste.
3 - Museum of Armoury: A significant attraction within the castle is the Museum of the Castle of San Giusto Armoury. It displays a wide range of European weaponry from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, along with chests from the same periods and Venetian traditional furniture.
The castle is easily accessible from the Trieste Centrale railway station, with the closest bus stop on Via Giuseppe Rota.

Finland

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.

4. Rotating temporary exhibitions bring fresh perspectives, often focusing on contemporary art, photography, or specific historical themes. 
5. The Museum Café and Shop are perfect for a relaxing break, offering views of the National Garden and unique Greek-inspired gifts. 
Visitor Tip: Allocate at least 2–3 hours to fully appreciate the museum’s extensive collection. Visit on Thursday evenings, when the museum stays open later, and enjoy discounted admission.
