In this experience, you visit a premier soroban academy near Tokyo that has a reputation for training students who compete at a high level in national soroban competitions. At the academy, you join the class itself, learning the techniques of this mental conditioning tool alongside young students and discovering how this training sharpens concentration, memory, and speed. 

As part of the visit, you assemble your own soroban before class and use it during the lesson, so the experience can continue later as a daily practice.

But João’s Algarve is more textured—what he calls the “poetic Algarve.” He cites writers like Sofia de Melo Breyner Andresen and José Saramago, who captured the soul of the region in images of sunsets, fruit, wind, and silence. For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. We cannot recommend it enough - for these reasons:

2. Beyond its art, the museum itself, originally a monastery, is a masterpiece of Andalusian Mannerist style. Its structure, centered around three patios and connected by a grand staircase to the church, showcases the architectural legacy of Seville.

Top reasons to visit include the bustling atmosphere, the eclectic mix of goods - high and low-priced, and the opportunity to dive into Madrid's vibrant local culture.
1. Start Your Journey at Plaza del Cascorro to immerse yourself in the heart of El Rastro. Here, you’ll find a dynamic mix of stalls selling everything from vintage clothing to funky accessories, setting the perfect tone for your adventure.
2. Diverse Finds on Calle Ribera de Curtidores: This steep hill lined with hundreds of stalls offers an array of products. From kitchen utensils to comic books, clothes, jewelry, art, and furnishings, the variety is endless, ensuring there’s something for every shopper.
3. Venture into streets like Calle de San Cayetano for art, or Calle Fray Ceferino González, formerly known for its live birds, now offering pet accessories and more. Each lane offers its own specialty, creating a treasure hunt experience.

El Rastro: Vibrant Marketplace

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Portugal’s Vila Viçosa, located in the Alentejo region, is a charming town known for its rich royal history, elegant architecture, and marble heritage. Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the Luis Barragán House & Studio (Casa Estudio Luis Barragán), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Designed by Luis Barragán, one of Mexico’s most influential architects, this 1948 residence showcases his signature use of natural light, geometric forms, and vibrant colors, blending Mexican tradition with modernist design. Visiting this house offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a genius who revolutionized contemporary architecture.

Whether you're strolling, shopping, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, these spots offer a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern energy.

1. Along Via Toledo, a mix of designer boutiques, local shops, and historic cafés creates a prime destination for shopping and people-watching. The street is always buzzing with life, offering a true taste of Naples’ energy.

2. Inside Galleria Umberto I, the impressive glass-and-iron dome creates a breathtaking setting for high-end stores, cafés, and restaurants. The architecture alone makes it worth a visit.

5. Traditional Neapolitan street food, including sfogliatella and cuoppo (a paper cone filled with fried seafood or snacks), is available from local vendors, making it easy to grab a delicious bite while exploring.
