A passionate traveler, Gaia has explored Eastern Europe and the Maghreb solo since 2018, drawing inspiration from places like Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, and beyond. The French often refer to the Nazi Occupation of France as “the dark years,” not least because of the Vichy government’s complicity in genocide. Walking through Paris and stopping at interpretive remnants of the Second World War — commemorative street placards, sites across the city, and traces embedded in public memory — this experience explores the narratives of bravery, complicity, and collaboration that emerged during the occupation, and the moral fractures revealed between 1940 and 1944.

Led by a novelist and expert in Holocaust Studies, the experience combines historical context with literary insight, drawing on the history of fascism and the psychology of genocide. It examines the Nazi occupation of Paris and how this period has been remembered, misremembered, and mythologized within the city.

Samuél Lopez-Barrantes is a novelist and musician with an MFA in Creative Writing (dissertation: History Is Dead, Long Live History! Postmodernism and Historiographic Metafiction) and an MA in Holocaust Studies (dissertation: The Humanness of Cruelty: Viktor Frankl, Alfred Adler, and the Psychology of Genocide).

He taught creative writing at the Sorbonne for five years before focusing on writing and leading historical walks on modernism, existentialism, and the Nazi Occupation of Paris. His first novel, Slim and the Beast, shares its name with his indie rock band, which has played extensively across Europe. His second novel, The Requisitions, is a work of historical metafiction set in Nazi-occupied Poland.

He is a board member and fiction editor at SOUVENIR Magazine, an arts and literature publication co-founded with his wife, photographer Augusta Sagnelli.

Parque Natural da Ria Formosa

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
