Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

After a local lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum with Delsi, applying what you’ve learned to objects on display. This museum visit, with an archaeologist at your side, allows for deeper engagement with Cusco’s archaeological heritage.

I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Beginning in Bilbao, you explore how contemporary art and traditional cuisine coexist in a city reinvented without losing its soul. DAY 1 – BILBAO | Arrive the day before to fully enjoy your first day. The morning explores how a single building reshaped Bilbao’s identity. Day 5 – ARRIVAL IN BORDEAUX | Crossing into France, Bordeaux greets you with elegance layered over complexity. Dark Tales of Bordeaux uncovers histories of power, trade, and moral ambiguity hidden beneath grand façades. Familiar streets take on new meaning as wealth, ambition, and exploitation come into focus, setting a reflective tone.

Day 6 – BORDEAUX | Morning centers on restoration and continuity in one of Bordeaux’s historic districts, revealing how the past is carefully tended rather than erased. Basque Coast to Bordeaux

A road trip itinerary from the Basque Country to Bordeaux, tracing art, culture, and the Atlantic.

A short hike gets you to the picturesque pique which is gorgeous. Very pretty and worth seeing if on Maui.

Iao Valley

Antelope Canyon may be the most famous of Utah’s slot canyons,  but if you want to avoid the large crowds, go to Buckskin Gulch - harder to reach but possibly, more enjoyable.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.

Through the Wire

Corfu, Greece, is home to the Church of Agios Spyridon, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and a revered religious site dedicated to Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. Built in the 16th century, this Venetian-style church is known for its distinctive red-domed bell tower—the tallest in Corfu—and its rich history of miracles attributed to the saint. Housing the relics of Saint Spyridon, the church is both a place of deep spiritual significance and an architectural gem in the heart of Corfu Town’s old district.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning for a quieter experience, and dress modestly out of respect for the religious setting. Nearby, you can also enjoy local treats like kumquat liqueur or Corfiot ginger beer at nearby shops.

Church of Agios Spyridon

A walk along the oceanfront to the Castle of San Sebastián in Cádiz is a captivating experience that combines stunning coastal views, rich history, and the serene beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the small La Caleta Beach, the castle stands at the end of a long promenade stretching out into the sea. Built on a small islet, the Castle of San Sebastián has protected Cádiz since the 18th century and now offers visitors a chance to explore its ancient fortifications while enjoying panoramic ocean views.

Highlights of the Oceanfront Walk:

1. La Caleta Beach: Begin your walk at La Caleta, one of Cádiz’s most picturesque beaches. With its golden sands and calm waters, this spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing dip. The beach is framed by the Castle of San Sebastián and Castle of Santa Catalina, creating a beautiful coastal scene.

2. The Promenade: The scenic walkway leading to the castle is a peaceful stretch, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic on both sides. As you walk along, you’ll feel the cool ocean breeze and hear the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore.

Oceaside Walk to San Sebastián

The Chora Church, now the Kariye Mosque, is a breathtaking testament to Byzantine artistry and architecture, tucked away in the quiet Edirnekapı neighborhood of Istanbul. Originally built as a monastery church, this historic gem captivates visitors with its magnificent mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Though less frequented than Istanbul’s more famous sites, it offers an intimate and awe-inspiring glimpse into Byzantine art at its zenith.

Kariye Mosque

Valencia, Spain, is home to the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias), an architectural and cultural masterpiece designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. This futuristic complex, set within the scenic Turia Gardens, is one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks. Combining science, art, and entertainment, the complex features striking white structures, reflective pools, and cutting-edge exhibitions—making it a must-visit destination for travelers, photographers, and families alike.

1. The Hemisfèric, shaped like a giant eye, houses an IMAX cinema, planetarium, and laser show—a must-visit for science and astronomy enthusiasts.

2. The Oceanogràfic is Europe’s largest aquarium, featuring immersive marine habitats from Arctic waters to tropical seas, and a stunning underwater tunnel where sharks swim overhead.

Finland

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.
