Your journey begins in Chioggia aboard a topa — a traditional flat-bottomed boat restored by your host, Damiano. Known as “Little Venice,” Chioggia has long lived in the shadow of its famous neighbor — but with its own traditions and tempo. As you glide down Canal Vena and under low bridges, daily life in the lagoon unfolds from a water-level view: fishermen docking, laundry hanging above the canals, neighbors chatting across boats. Damiano, who lives here, shares the rhythm of his hometown and points out the markers of its past and present.

From Chioggia, the topa crosses open water toward Pellestrina. Mussel farms stretch out across the lagoon; wooden stilt houses rise above the tide. Pellestrina sits on one of the barrier islands that protect the lagoon from the Adriatic — a working village shaped by water, with a low skyline and painted facades that glow under the sun. The return route traces slower canals with wide lagoon views.

This is Rio’s neighborhood where he’s learned the names and faces of shopkeepers, artists, and regular customers and is happy to introduce them to visitors.

You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends. 

You’ll enjoy a retro-style lunch at an old shop specializing in okonomiyaki, a savory pancake before exploring the unique shops along the shotengai including a knife shop, tea shop, and a second-hand kimono shop. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with shopkeepers, and learn more about the rich history of the Asagaya area.

This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. After drying off, you will visit the Tebenquinche Lagoon to study the salt deposits from the lakeside. There is a relaxed lunch interlude in the town of Toconao where you will tour its main square and side streets. The afternoon concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat in the Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos wade in the shallows for shrimp. Throughout the day, photography remains the priority. 

This is an immersive exploration of the flora and fauna of the Salar de Atacama focusing on photography. Mirko—schooled in the geology and geography of the region—will impart knowledge sharpened by years of living in San Pedro de Atacama. He will explain the fragility of the ecosystems and provide insight into why the Indigenous Licanantay people consider the lagoons and volcanoes sacred. As a professional photographer, he will train your eye to capture the smallest of details and mentor you through the stages of capturing landscapes and close-ups.

The experience also includes the option to swim in Cejar Lagoon; a thrilling experience which fosters a deeper connection with the environment and supports with acclimatizing to this parched landscape. Alcázar of Jerez

Lagos, Portugal, offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and coastal charm. Known for its role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery, Lagos boasts a rich history seen in its cobbled streets, ancient city walls, and beautifully preserved architecture. 

Highlights:

1. Wander through narrow streets lined with whitewashed buildings, colorful tiles, and decorative iron balconies. Key landmarks include the 16th-century Fortress of Ponta da Bandeira and the Church of Saint Anthony.

2. Visit one of Europe’s first slave markets, now a small museum (Mercado de Escravos) offering insight into Lagos’s role in the 15th-century Atlantic slave trade. Exhibits provide historical context, fostering awareness of this period’s lasting impact.

3. The city center is a canvas of local art. Vibrant murals, sculptures, and galleries showcase works by contemporary Portuguese artists, celebrating the creativity and spirit of Lagos. Don’t miss the LAC – Laboratório de Actividades Criativas, an arts center in a former prison.

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Naples, Italy, is home to the extraordinary Sansevero Chapel, a hidden gem of Baroque art and mystery, located in the heart of the historic center. This small yet breathtaking chapel is most famous for the Veiled Christ, a marble masterpiece by Giuseppe Sanmartino that astounds visitors with its delicate, lifelike depiction of Christ covered in a translucent shroud. The chapel, commissioned by the enigmatic Prince Raimondo di Sangro, is also filled with symbolic sculptures, intricate decorations, and scientific curiosities, making it one of the most fascinating attractions in the city.

1. In the center of the chapel, the Veiled Christ stuns visitors with its remarkable realism, as the finely sculpted marble veil appears almost weightless over Christ’s lifeless body. The level of craftsmanship makes it one of the most admired sculptures in the world.

2. Along the chapel’s walls, intriguing allegorical statues represent virtues such as Modesty and Disillusionment, each intricately carved with unique artistic techniques that showcase Baroque genius.

3. Beneath the chapel, the mysterious "anatomical machines" display eerily preserved human circulatory systems, adding an unexpected scientific and alchemical element to the visit.

4. Every detail of the chapel’s interior, from its ornate ceiling frescoes to its intricate marble floor, reflects the artistic vision and esoteric interests of Prince Raimondo di Sangro, a patron of the arts and a scientist.

5. The chapel’s intimate and atmospheric setting enhances the mystical experience, drawing visitors into a world of beauty, faith, and mystery unlike anywhere else in Naples.

Visitor Tip: Book tickets in advance, as entry is limited and the chapel is one of Naples’ most sought-after cultural attractions. Photography is not allowed inside, so take time to truly absorb the details.

Veiled Christ

Guatemala

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal
