Hosts Paula and George welcome you into their “stone kitchen” to roll up your sleeves and take part in a hands-on preparation of a classic Greek feast, side by side with your hosts.

Guided by Paula and George, you’ll chop, roll, stir, and season while learning the stories behind time-honored recipes, from tzatziki to tomato fritters to melt-in-your-mouth main dishes. The menu changes with the seasons, and so does the energy—it’s part cooking lesson, part gathering.

Paula and George are a joyful couple who fell in love in Santorini and with Santorini. United by their passion for Greek food and culture, they have turned their cave house in Megalochori into a welcoming home where guests can cook, share, and connect.

Italy

Your journey begins in Chioggia aboard a topa — a traditional flat-bottomed boat restored by your host, Damiano. Known as “Little Venice,” Chioggia has long lived in the shadow of its famous neighbor — but with its own traditions and tempo. As you glide down Canal Vena and under low bridges, daily life in the lagoon unfolds from a water-level view: fishermen docking, laundry hanging above the canals, neighbors chatting across boats. Damiano, who lives here, shares the rhythm of his hometown and points out the markers of its past and present.

From Chioggia, the topa crosses open water toward Pellestrina. Mussel farms stretch out across the lagoon; wooden stilt houses rise above the tide. Pellestrina sits on one of the barrier islands that protect the lagoon from the Adriatic — a working village shaped by water, with a low skyline and painted facades that glow under the sun. The return route traces slower canals with wide lagoon views.

Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Reflecting on her childhood, she recalls the close-knit neighborhood where people relied on one another. Carnival—an annual February tradition—was central. Lucía remembers it too; her grandmother was a seamstress who hand-stitched elaborate costumes each year.

Monasterio de la Cartuja

This city known for its wine is just gorgeous. Though hot in summer, it is stunning! Definitely worth a visit and if you have time the surroundings small town also known for their wine. 

In Bordeaux, be sure to walk down rue sainte Catherine, the longest pedestrian street in Europe! There will be plenty of shopping to do, and the main square with the cathedral is also a must see. The bell tower is not attached to the church and is able to be climbed for gorgeous views.

Known for its breathtaking beauty, Alqueva is a certified Dark Sky Reserve, providing one of the best stargazing experiences in Europe. The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

The Guadalquivir River Walk in Seville offers a peaceful yet vibrant way to experience the city’s charm while enjoying scenic views along one of Spain’s most historic rivers. Stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir, this popular promenade links some of Seville’s most famous attractions, offering a blend of history, culture, and leisure activities. The river itself played a key role in Seville’s development, once serving as the main conduit for trade with the New World. Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

Highlights of the Guadalquivir River Walk:

1. Torre del Oro: Begin your walk near this iconic 13th-century tower. Its golden glow and rich history make it a perfect starting point. From here, enjoy views of the river and the surrounding monuments.

2. Triana Bridge and Market: Cross the picturesque Puente de Triana to visit the traditional Triana neighborhood, known for its flamenco roots and lively market. The market is a great spot for fresh produce, local crafts, and authentic tapas.

Guadalquivir River Walk

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Chile

Chile’s Puritama Hot Springs are a hidden oasis in the Atacama Desert, offering a series of geothermal pools surrounded by lush vegetation in an otherwise arid landscape. Located about 30 km (19 miles) from San Pedro de Atacama, these natural thermal baths are rich in minerals and maintain a soothing temperature between 28–33°C (82–91°F). With wooden walkways connecting the pools and breathtaking canyon views, Puritama provides a relaxing and rejuvenating experience in the heart of the desert.


1. Eight natural geothermal pools, each with different temperatures, offer the perfect mix of relaxation and revitalization.

2. Mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic benefits, helping to relieve muscle tension and improve circulation.

3. A scenic desert canyon setting, where the contrast between the green riverbanks and the surrounding dry hills creates a stunning backdrop.

4. A peaceful atmosphere, far from the crowds, makes it an ideal place for a mid-day retreat after exploring the high-altitude landscapes of the Atacama.

5. Well-maintained wooden walkways and resting areas, allowing easy access to the pools while preserving the natural environment.

Visitor Tip: Arrive early to enjoy a more private experience, as it can get busier in the afternoon. Bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and water, as there are limited facilities on-site. Some guided tours include Puritama as part of a relaxation day in the Atacama Desert.

Puritama Hot Springs

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.

Vinsanto

Portugal’s Fluviário de Mora, located in the heart of the Alentejo region, is a unique freshwater aquarium dedicated to the rivers and aquatic ecosystems of Portugal and beyond. Opened in 2007, it offers an educational and immersive experience, showcasing native and exotic freshwater species while raising awareness about the importance of freshwater conservation. With its interactive exhibits, family-friendly atmosphere, and focus on environmental sustainability, it’s a great stop for nature lovers and curious minds alike.


1. Diverse freshwater species, including native Iberian fish like sturgeon, barbel, and lamprey, as well as exotic species from the Amazon and African rivers.

2. Otter habitat, where visitors can observe playful Eurasian otters in a naturalistic setting, learning about their behavior and conservation efforts.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the morning for a quieter experience and better chances of seeing the otters active. Pair your visit with a stop at the nearby Gameiro Ecological Park, which features a river beach, walking trails, and a suspension bridge.
