Marché des Capucins has been part of Bordeaux for nearly two centuries, and you enter it with Anne, who knows the market through her work as a chef and long-standing relationships with its vendors. They greet her with the ease that comes from years of familiarity.

Stalls overflow with regional cheeses, oysters, fresh produce and charcuterie — a vivid panorama of Southwest French gastronomy. You follow Anne through the aisles as she introduces tastings based on what is best that morning. Each stop focuses on the person behind the product and on the decisions that shape its flavor. Producers talk openly about their routines, sharing skills and memories. Wine pairings accompany the tastings and help you understand how different elements of the region connect.

In a dawn wildlife excursion, you'll canoe the magical canals in Xochimilco with a biodiversity expert. You set out before sunrise with private transport from your hotel. At the launch, board a low canoe and slip into the canals. Your wildlife guide outfits you with binoculars and field ID sheets. Dawn lifts over chinampas — man-made farming islands — while you listen and watch: Great Egret stalking in shallows, American Coot cutting V-shapes, an Osprey circling, the flash of a Blue Mockingbird in willow shade.

Next, at Elvira’s workshop, you’ll transfer your sketch onto a glazed 20x20 cm tile, learning majolica painting techniques. Japan

This rare-access experience is a private photoshoot with a real Maiko — a young woman apprenticing to become a Geisha. Maiko are renowned for their colorful kimono, elaborately styled hair, and refined manners. Most visitors are lucky to catch even a fleeting glimpse of them as they move quickly through Kyoto’s streets between appointments. Recent regulations protect Maiko from unwanted attention from tourists. But in this experience, you’ll have the privilege of spending relaxed, uninterrupted time photographing and engaging with a Maiko.

The photo shoot takes place at a one-of-a-kind heritage house in Kyoto – the perfect, atmospheric backdrop for the session. Under the guidance of a professional expert photographer, you’ll learn how to use both natural and artificial light to create evocative portraits. You'll also practice how to work with a live subject — learning and practicing how to pose and frame your subject to evoke emotion and tell a story through your lens. 

This fully private session offers an extraordinary opportunity to interact with a Maiko while learning professional portrait photography techniques. At the heart of Cuglieri’s Holy Week are traditions that blend raw spirituality with centuries-old rituals. During the solemn Mass, the choir "a cuncordu" performs the Miserere, their voices weaving an ancient polyphonic tapestry of devotion. This distinctive singing style, carried by four male voices (bassu, contra, mesa boghe, and boghe), resonates deeply in the sacred silence, offering unforgettable, evocative moments of connection to a tradition passed down through generations.

The experience reaches its emotional peak during the Procession of the Dead Christ, a solemn parade through the village’s narrow streets. Statues of the deposed Christ and the Madonna Addolorata are carried with reverence, the flicker of candlelight illuminating faces etched with devotion.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.

Exploring the Alhambra

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

How Not to be Templed Out.

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.

Temples and Temples

Rising from the desert plains like a vision from another time, Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved ksars (fortified villages). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning earthen settlement along the former trans-Saharan trade route has been a backdrop for countless films and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
