At the edge of Granada’s Albaicín neighborhood stands a factory where Fajalauza has been making pottery the same way for over 500 years. Fajalauza is a living record of Granada’s artistic identity, tracing its techniques to the Al-Andalus period and the workshops once clustered near Puerta de Fajalauza. This ceramic tradition blends Islamic, Iberian, Andalusian influences into a style known across Spain: white enamel, cobalt blue and green glazes, and patterns that echo the Alhambra.

This tour, led by a member of the Fajalauza Foundation, opens parts of the site normally closed to the public: kiln rooms, workshop floors, the small museum where archive pieces sit beside recent works. The glazes echo those used for centuries, often inspired by the Alhambra.

Ceramics here were created for daily use: vessels to carry water, preserve food, identify homes, mark graves. Even now, their forms remain largely unchanged. Few places in Spain hold time, rhythm, and tradition in such balance.

Fajalauza is one of few surviving craft lineages in Spain with unbroken continuity from Post-Reconquista era to the present. Fajalauza tiles replaced originals in Patio de los Arrayanes. Still run by the Morales family since the 19th century, its techniques and motifs—heraldic eagles, grenadine sprigs, blue-green latticework—have remained largely unchanged. The factory’s location, firing techniques, and visual language have endured war, exile and mass production. It is here, in the factory, where each piece begins—still shaped by wheel, hand, story.

The Morales family now runs the Fajalauza Foundation which preserves its legacy. This experience offers access not only to the factory but to the people preserving it. The Foundation’s members guide you through kilns, archives, workshops, sharing their stories. The tour is about heritage—but also part of a larger effort to preserve and convert it into a cultural center and school. You become part of that.

This 3-hour cooking class teaches you how to make Argentine empanadas in the home of a local couple in Buenos Aires. Empanadas vary across Argentina, and you’ll want to ask Diego and Camila how the Buenos Aires style differs from those in provinces like Salta, Tucumán, or Córdoba.

This is a food-and-neighborhood experience through Istanbul, tracing the daily routes locals take every day. It begins at the Spice Bazaar, where shelves of saffron, sumac, and dried figs recall the city’s trading past. From there, you’ll board a ferry across the Bosphorus and explore three villages on the Asian side—each with its own rhythm.

In Üsküdar, snack on street simit and stuffed mussels while browsing produce stands that locals frequent. Then hop into a dolmuş (mini-bus) to reach Çengelköy, a waterfront village known for its pickled cucumbers, tea gardens, and hillside lanes. From there, head to Kuzguncuk, where wooden houses lean into each other and synagogues sit beside churches. Corviale is one of the most ambitious and controversial housing projects ever built in Rome. Walking through Corviale today means entering the layered story of a city that, in the 1970s, faced deep social inequality—when a third of its population still lived in shack settlements. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Picturesque Rovinj Harbor

Faroe Islands

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Tumbling Recklessly

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

Megalochori Village is one of Santorini’s most charming and picturesque settlements, offering a serene escape from the island’s busier spots. 2. Its iconic bell towers, such as the one at the entrance of the village square, are among the most photographed landmarks in Santorini. 
3. Megalochori is home to historic mansions and cave houses, many of which have been beautifully restored into boutique accommodations and wineries. 
4. The village is a hub for traditional wineries, where visitors can sample local Assyrtiko wines and learn about Santorini’s winemaking traditions. 
5. Quiet alleys and peaceful squares offer a glimpse into authentic village life, with friendly locals and inviting taverns serving fresh Greek cuisine. 
Visitor Tip: Spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring Megalochori at a relaxed pace. Visit in the late afternoon for softer lighting and fewer crowds, and consider staying for dinner at one of the village’s cozy tavernas.

Shrouded in legend, this partially submerged fortification is believed by some to have inspired Jimi Hendrix’s song “Castles Made of Sand.” As the sun sets, the silhouette of the crumbling tower against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean creates one of the most breathtaking views in Essaouira, making it a must-visit spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.


1. The ruined watchtower, with its weathered stone arches and partially submerged base, creates an atmospheric setting for dramatic sunset photography.

2. The golden light reflecting off the Atlantic Ocean casts a magical glow on the ruins, making for unforgettable panoramic views.

Walking with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen of the Makgadikgadi Plains in the Central Kalahari, quintessential hunter-gatherers, I learned several things that I hope never to have to use - how to pronounce first names that are laden with clicks, collect plants for medicinal recipes, dig for scorpions, and make a fire with twigs and leaves.

Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Walking with Zu/’hoasi

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the most stunning examples of Marinid-era Islamic architecture. Built in the 14th century by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, this madrasa (Islamic school) served as both a center of learning and a place of worship. Unlike many religious sites in Morocco, Bou Inania is one of the few madrasas open to non-Muslim visitors, allowing them to admire its breathtaking zellij tilework, intricate wood carvings, and grand courtyard. A masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, the madrasa is a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and photography.

Bou Inania Madrasa

The Mayan culture is one of the most important indigenous cultures in Southern Mexico. Artifacts from bygone times stretch far across the jungles of Quintana Roos and Chiapas. 

If you want to learn more about how indigenous peoples lived before colonization, don't miss the ruins of Palenque. Arguably the largest Mayan ruins on the continent, they're tucked away, deeply hidden in the Mexican jungle. The highlights of the actual ruins are the numerous temples, a palace and aqueducts, and of course, a guided tour where you can learn all about Mexico's history. If you venture out into the jungle, you'll encounter rare wildlife like monkeys, colorful birds, and giant snakes.

Take sunscreen, plenty of water, and some snacks, as the tour takes at least half a day.

In the mist-covered Blue Mountains of Jamaica lies the enchanting Holywell Park, a hidden gem that whispers stories of nature's wonders. Amidst the lush greenery, we embarked on a long walk with a local guide, seeking tranquility. We wandered through the verdant trails, each turn unveiling a canvas of vibrant ferns, towering trees, and melodious bird songs that filled the air.

Holywell Recreational Park, situated about 3,000 feet above sea level and roughly an hour's drive from Kingston, is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park, part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, is a lush sanctuary that boasts several species of ferns among other flora like wild raspberries, cheeseberries, epiphytes, nasturtiums, impatients, and notable trees including the Blue Mahoe (Jamaica’s national tree), Caribbean Pine, and Milkwood. The park also supports various species of endemic birds. It offers a range of trails with varying difficulties, from easy to moderate, and can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes to complete, providing an immersive nature experience amidst the cooler mountain temperatures.
