This private, archaeologist-led visit to San Francisco Monastery and La Merced Convent explores how Cusco shifted from an Inca imperial capital to a colonial city. At San Francisco Monastery, you notice its Baroque façade giving way to decorated chapels and serene courtyards. Delsi draws your attention to the blend of Indigenous and European architectural elements, explaining how local materials, techniques, and ideas were incorporated into a new religious framework -- where the monastery played a continuous role in Cusco’s spiritual and community life since the 16th century.

Irish-born Daniel O’Shea and Peruvian-born Delsi Espinoza are the co-founders of an archaeological venture that contributes to the preservation of Cusco and the Sacred Valley's cultural heritage. The couple have teamed up on archaeological projects across Cusco's Southern and Sacred Valleys. They run conservation, artifact registry, and site mapping projects—primarily designed for volunteers and students. Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, she has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. Delsi has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
