Andrea Bustillos, trained in Madrid, previously directed a gallery focused on contemporary painting and now leads a national program supporting Mexico’s Creative Industries. Andrea Villers, educated in Granada with a master’s in Curatorial Studies from UNAM, runs a consultancy that develops exhibition projects and advises on cultural strategy.

Their experience is in-depth and shaped by their knowledge of the local art scene and strong relationships with artists, curators, and institutions. On rare occasions when they are unavailable, their trusted colleagues Jaime and Mario—also seasoned art historians—will host in their place.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

You'll begin in Faro, then move inland through Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, and Alte, before curving west toward Lagos, Monchique, Silves, and Olhão. This is a route shaped by local knowledge, seasonal rhythms, and hands-on experience. Along the way, you’ll meet the people who carry the Algarve’s quieter heritage: cork workers, carob farmers, weavers, bakers, and storytellers. For most visitors, the Algarve conjures images of beaches and seafood. But João’s Algarve is more textured—what he calls the “poetic Algarve.” He cites writers like Sofia de Melo Breyner Andresen and José Saramago, who captured the soul of the region in images of sunsets, fruit, wind, and silence. For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Travelers are interested in how we live, how we spend the day, what we do.” This itinerary is João’s answer to that challenge: an immersive route where nature, food, craft, and memory guide the pace.

The Charming Soul of Lisbon

5 days in Lisbon with palaces, tiles, fado, markets and a day trip to the mountains and villages.

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the Biblioteca Vasconcelos, an architectural masterpiece and one of the most spectacular modern libraries in the world. Opened in 2006, this "mega-library" blends futuristic design with a vast literary collection, featuring floating bookshelves, towering glass walls, and open metal walkways. Named after José Vasconcelos, a key figure in Mexican education and culture, the library offers a serene space for book lovers, students, and photographers alike.


1. Stunning architecture, with suspended bookshelves and steel walkways that create a mesmerizing, maze-like visual effect.

Biblioteca Vasconcelos

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Riad Living

Embark on a historical journey at Silves Castle, a prominent Moorish fortress in the Algarve. - Impressive Structures: The castle features an irregular polygon shape, complete with four towers and seven crenellated posts, linked by walls with battlements. Notable structures within the castle include the Cistern of Moura and the Cisterna dos Cães, both historic water supply systems.
- Historic Interior: The castle's interior is equally fascinating, with halls covered in painted wood and various historic artifacts. The Governor's residence, believed to have been used by Prince Henry, showcases foundations and remnants of a spacious living room with a vaulted ceiling.
- Botanical Garden: Within the old Governor's garden, a botanical garden has been created, reflecting the Portuguese Discoveries period. This garden adds a serene and educational element to the castle visit, blending history with natural beauty.
Silves Castle is open to visitors year-round and the town of Silves itself is rich in history, offering additional attractions such as the Gothic Silves Cathedral and the Archaeological Museum. Exploring the town, you'll find traces of its Moorish past and the impact of the 1755 earthquake. The castle is easily accessible by car, and it's recommended to visit by this means due to limited public transportation options.

Moorish Silves Castle

The Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art (CAAC), situated in the historically rich Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas on the Isla de la Cartuja in Seville, is a premier institution for contemporary art in Andalusia. Established in February 1990, the CAAC aims to foster research, conservation, promotion, and dissemination of contemporary art. The transformation of the former Carthusian monastery into the CAAC's headquarters in 1997 marked a significant development in its mission, blending the rich heritage of the site with the dynamism of contemporary artistic expressions​​. Why visit?
1. The CAAC houses a diverse collection that spans artistic trends from the mid-20th century to the present, featuring works by notable artists such as Luis Gordillo, Candida Höfer, and Louise Bourgeois.
2. The Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, where the CAAC is located, offers visitors not just art but a journey through history. The monastery, with its Mudéjar architecture, showcases the evolution from a religious site to a pottery factory by Charles Pickman in the 19th century, and finally to a contemporary art centre. This site has hosted Christopher Columbus and was a pivotal location in Seville's ceramic industry​​.

CAAC: Modern Meets Monastic

Jamaica

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.

Oh the Places You’ll Go

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts in located inside the ancient Fes Medina and is renowned for its comprehensive display of woodcraft but also for its unique architectural features that make a visit here a memorable experience. Why visit?
1. One of the standout attractions within the museum is the elegant fountain located in the courtyard. Beautifully adorned with intricate wood and tile work, it exemplifies the fine craftsmanship typical of Moroccan artistry and offers a tranquil centerpiece to the museum’s architecture. 
2. The museum's structure itself, an 18th-century fondouk that was once a bustling center for merchants, and has been meticulously restored to showcase the original wooden carvings and tile work. 
3. Each floor of the museum offers a different perspective on the evolution of woodcraft in Morocco, from domestic and architectural to liturgical pieces, providing a comprehensive view of this traditional art form.
4. Amid the chaos of the Medina, the museum offers a peaceful retreat. The rooftop café provides a space to relax and soak in the views of the city.
The museum is accessible with an entrance fee - it’s definitely a place of insight and inspiration, and can be viewed in an hour’s time. 


Nejjarine Museum of Fes

France

There are so many museums and art galleries in Paris that it's hard to decide where to go first. Most tourists want to stand in line at the Louvre, admire Claude Monet, or visit the National Museum of Art – but as so few check out the famous street art of Paris, we knew it was our thing to do.
There is so much history behind each piece of art or painting out there that it is worth investing some extra money and time to immerse yourself in Paris's artistic exploration fully. We did a whole self-organized art walk visiting 7 streets, with an audio tour, and visited the different places on our own (though you can get a personal guide). 
Our highlight was Rue Saint-Maur – a 2km-long street painted mainly by the artist Kashink. The artist plays with classic elements of Parisian street art and combines them with modern political messages.

Colombia

The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, set in a 17th-century palace in the Janelas Verdes area of Lisbon, is a beacon of Portugal's artistic and cultural heritage. Known for housing the most extensive collection of national treasures in Portugal, the museum is a journey through time, showcasing works from the 12th to the 19th century. Top highlights:
1 - Architectural Splendor: The museum's architecture is a masterpiece in itself, with grand arches and soaring ceilings that create a mesmerizing ambience. The building, once the Palácio Alvor-Pombal, is a testament to Portugal's rich history, and its gardens offer a tranquil escape with views of the port and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
2 - Artistic Masterpieces: The museum's extensive collection includes notable works like Hieronymus Bosch's "Temptation of Saint Anthony" and Albrecht Dürer’s "Saint Jerome". It also features the Belém Monstrance, made with gold and gems brought by Vasco da Gama, and fascinating Japanese screens depicting the Portuguese arrival in Japan.
3 - Portuguese and European Works: The museum's Portuguese gallery includes significant works like Gregório Lopes’ “Martyrdom of St. Sebastian” and Domingos Sequeira’s “The Adoration of the Magi”. In the European collection, one can admire paintings by Piero della Francesca, Tiepolo, Van Dyck, and Zurbarán.
4 - The Albertas Chapel and Oriental Art: The Albertas Chapel, part of the original palace, exemplifies Portuguese baroque with its gilt carvings and blue-and-white tile panels. The Oriental Art section displays pieces from India, Japan, China, and Macau, reflecting Portugal's historical trade routes.
The museum is accessible by public transport, with bus and tram options available. General admission is €10.00, and it's free with the Lisboa Card. The museum's location near the charming Santos neighborhood makes it easily combinable with a visit to other local attractions.

Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

In the heart of Fes, the Chouara and Sidi Moussa tanneries stand as enduring relics of the Middle Ages, their practices largely unchanged since that era. Here, the ancient art of leather tanning transforms raw hides into beautifully supple fabrics through a strikingly colorful yet arduous process. As you navigate the narrow alleys leading to the tanneries, the air grows thick with a pungent aroma, a hallmark of this traditional craft. Things to look for:

1. The Chouara Tannery, perhaps the most famous in Fes, alongside Sidi Moussa, offers a rare glimpse into the labor-intensive process of leather production. Hundreds of workers from multiple generations of families toil from sunrise to sunset. They labor over open vats filled with a vivid mosaic of natural dyes and pigeon dung, an essential component in softening the leather. This spectacle of color and effort unfolds beneath the Moroccan sun, casting a palette that feels almost surreal against the earthy tones of the Medina.

2. Visitors are handed a sprig of mint to ward off the overwhelming smells. The sensory overload is part of the experience!

3. Guides explain the dyeing process, pointing out the use of natural ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, indigo, and henna. 

4. After dyeing, the leathers are laid out to dry on the nearby rooftops, creating an iconic and photogenic scene that defines the visual landscape of the tanneries. 

5. A visit to the tanneries is an education in the tenacity and skill of the Moroccan artisans who maintain these centuries-old techniques. Despite modern advancements, these methods have resisted change, preserved by the artisans’ dedication to their heritage. 

As you leave, the sight of the vibrant leathers, the sound of workers chanting in rhythm, and the smell of natural tannins linger, leaving a lasting impression of a craft preserved in time. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes as the area can be wet and slippery.

The Tanneries of Fes

Corfu, Greece, is home to the Church of Agios Spyridon, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and a revered religious site dedicated to Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. Built in the 16th century, this Venetian-style church is known for its distinctive red-domed bell tower—the tallest in Corfu—and its rich history of miracles attributed to the saint. Housing the relics of Saint Spyridon, the church is both a place of deep spiritual significance and an architectural gem in the heart of Corfu Town’s old district.


1. The church’s tall bell tower, visible from across Corfu Town, is an iconic part of the island’s skyline and a popular subject for photography.

2. Inside, visitors can admire exquisite frescoes, gilded iconostases, and ornate chandeliers, reflecting the fusion of Venetian and Byzantine artistic influences.

3. The relics of Saint Spyridon, displayed in a silver sarcophagus, are venerated by pilgrims and are said to have miraculous healing powers.

4. The church hosts several religious processions throughout the year, where the relics are paraded through Corfu Town—a deeply rooted tradition dating back centuries.

5. Located in the bustling heart of Corfu’s Old Town, the church is surrounded by charming cafés, shops, and narrow cobbled streets perfect for exploring.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning for a quieter experience, and dress modestly out of respect for the religious setting. Nearby, you can also enjoy local treats like kumquat liqueur or Corfiot ginger beer at nearby shops.

Church of Agios Spyridon

Phaistos Palace, one of Crete’s most important Minoan archaeological sites, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient civilization without the crowds of Knossos. Perched on a hill overlooking the fertile Messara Plain, the site features well-preserved ruins and sweeping views.
1. The palace offers an authentic experience of Minoan architecture and culture.
2. Visitors can explore ruins of storage rooms, ceremonial areas, and royal quarters.
3. Its hilltop location provides panoramic views of the surrounding plain and mountains.
4. The site is historically significant as the discovery place of the famous Phaistos Disc.
5. The peaceful atmosphere allows for quiet exploration away from larger tourist crowds.

Granada, Spain, is home to the Monasterio de San Jerónimo, a stunning Renaissance monastery known for its exquisite cloisters, intricate altarpiece, and historical significance. Founded in the 16th century by the Catholic Monarchs, this monastery blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, making it one of the most architecturally impressive religious sites in Andalusia. It also holds a deep connection to Spanish history, as it was the final resting place of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the renowned general known as "El Gran Capitán."

1. The main cloister, surrounded by elegant archways and lush gardens, provides a peaceful retreat and showcases the harmony of Renaissance architecture.

2. Inside the church, an opulent altarpiece adorned with gold leaf and intricate carvings stands as one of the most spectacular in Spain, celebrating the military victories of El Gran Capitán.
