Holy Week in Málaga is one of the city’s most revered traditions. Each year, the streets become a living stage for devotion, history and collective memory. Over the course of the week, approximately 45 formal processions organized by over forty brotherhoods (cofradías) move through Málaga’s historic center, carrying lifelike wooden sculptures of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

This experience offers an intimate vantage point from a private balcony overlooking the processional route, allowing guests to observe the processions below while immersing themselves in the music and pageantry. Semana Santa in Málaga is distinguished by the scale of its processions through the city’s narrow streets. Here, the floats—known locally as tronos—are monumental platforms bearing sculpted scenes of the Passion of Jesus Christ and images of the Virgin Mary. The tradition of carrying tronos in Málaga spans centuries. These tronos are carried by teams of hombres de trono, men who undergo extensive training to bear extraordinary weight.

From a private balcony on Calle Larios, guests witness the physical and emotional intensity of the procession at close range: the synchronized movement of the hombres de trono, the cadence of drums, and the slow advance shaped by discipline and faith. Nazarenos, dressed in robes and pointed hoods, accompany the tronos—symbols of repentance and humility rooted in medieval tradition.

This private 90-minute mezcal tasting is designed for first-timers curious about agave spirits, as well as longtime fans seeking a short, deeply rooted way to gain new appreciation. Andrea — an anthropologist and longtime resident of Coyoacán with family roots in Guerrero — begins with a brief walk near her studio in a neighborhood shaped by the encounter of colonial and Indigenous cultures — the roots from which mezcal emerged.

Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Each mezcal is paired with locally inspired bites, drawing on the Guerrero heritage Andrea brings to both her cooking and design, and curated to enhance and echo the complexity of the spirits.

Andrea is an anthropologist by training, Master Mezcalier by trade, and a singer. She has fifteen years of experience promoting Guerrero State's mezcal culture and traditions, an area not typically associated with mezcal, but with plenty of flavors that are a joy to discover.

Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally. 

Andrea's knowledge encompasses not only the specific culture of Guerrero, but extends to the diverse traditions that exist throughout the length and breadth of Mexico. She is certified as a Master Mezcalier and as a Leader in Food and Beverage Sensory Evaluation.

This experience explores Bordeaux through its street art, offering a different view of the city beyond its UNESCO status. Led by Fleur, the walk unfolds within the city centre, following traces left by writers and street artists on walls, shutters, and urban surfaces.

At each stop, Fleur introduces the artists behind the works, their inspirations, and techniques they use. The discussion opens onto the relationship between street art and society, and how these works engage with public debate and respond to current issues.

Along the way, Fleur provides broader background, outlining how tagging and graffiti first appeared, how they evolved into street art, and how cities negotiate this form of artistic movement today — between regulation, preservation, and erasure. Drawing on her long-term documentation of Bordeaux’s street art scene and on conversations with local artists, she shares insight into creative process, artistic intention, and how each piece interacts with its surroundings.

Bordeaux is most often framed through eighteenth-century façades and wine estates. This walk shifts attention to a more contemporary artistic expression, bringing attention to voices and ideas rarely included in its public image.

Fleur’s perspective is shaped by years of focused work blogging about and documenting street artists active in Bordeaux. Through direct encounters and interviews, she has explored their themes, working methods, and intentions. Daniel Flores is a Mexican artist and the director of the Producción Gráfica Zanate printmaking workshop. He specializes in graphic arts and printmaking and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally. He has also received several grants for projects focused on graphic and plastic arts production within various communities across the state of Oaxaca. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

DAY 1 – ATHENS TO NAFPLIO | The journey begins in Athens with a guided exploration of the Acropolis, uncovering layers of history. In the afternoon, you collect the car and head south, leaving the city behind. A stop at the Corinth Canal marks your entry into the Peloponnese before arriving in Nafplio by early evening.
DAY 2 – NAFPLIO | Late morning brings a guided wine-focused experience that deepens your understanding of Nafplio and its surrounding region. The afternoon is open for independent exploration along the waterfront or through the old town. With no driving today, the pace resets before longer distances ahead.

DAY 11 – KALAMATA TO PYLOS | You continue along the Messinian coast, stopping at Koroni and Methoni to explore their seaside fortresses. By late afternoon, you reach Pylos, overlooking the calm waters of Navarino Bay.

It was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquista, Pere d'Albalat.

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.

Oh the Places You’ll Go

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.

Chouara Tannery

Tucked away in the High Atlas Mountains, Imlil is a picturesque Berber village and the starting point for some of Morocco’s best mountain hikes, including the trek to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Surrounded by dramatic valleys, walnut groves, and traditional mudbrick houses, Imlil offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and Berber culture. Staying in a Berber guesthouse offers an authentic cultural experience, and packing warm layers is important, as temperatures drop at higher altitudes.

Imlil Village & Hiking Trails

Set in the picturesque Maria Luisa Park within the Plaza de América, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions is a beacon of Andalusian ethnological heritage. Housed in the Mudejar Pavilion, designed by Aníbal González for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, this museum offers a deep dive into the region’s traditional culture. With its rich collection ranging from ceramics to lace and embroidery, it beautifully preserves the customs, crafts, and ways of life that have shaped Andalusia over centuries. 
1. The museum houses the Díaz Velázquez collection of lace and embroidery, one of Europe’s finest, alongside treasures such as the Aguiar costumbrista paintings and the Soria collection of oriental porcelain and ivory, highlighting centuries of Andalusian craftsmanship. 
2. Its ceramics collection is one of the most comprehensive in Europe, showcasing the evolution of Andalusian ceramic art—from traditional techniques to the cultural influences that shaped the craft. 
3. Exhibits explore intangible heritage, including traditional costumes, musical instruments, and agricultural practices, offering a vivid picture of Andalusian life and its deep connection to the land.

Museum of Popular Arts

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.
