João's grandfather planted most olive trees, but some have been here for thousands of years. Unlike the super-intensive olive groves common in the area, João's traditional approach relies solely on rainwater and eschews chemical use. This experience delves into the rich history of the farm and the meticulous process of olive oil production.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

The Ortigia Cathedral, or Duomo di Siracusa, located in the historical heart of Syracuse on the island of Ortigia, is a magnificent blend of history, architecture, and art. This cathedral, with its layers of historical and architectural evolution, stands as a testament to the rich and varied history of Sicily. Key highlights include:

1. Originally a Greek Doric temple dedicated to Athena, the structure was transformed into a church when Syracuse became a part of the Roman Empire. Over centuries, it has been rebuilt and modified, incorporating elements of Norman, Byzantine, and Baroque architecture, making it a living museum of architectural styles.

2. The cathedral's current façade is a stunning example of Sicilian Baroque, characterized by its dramatic columns, intricate sculptures, and ornate details, typical of the 18th-century Baroque style prevalent in Sicily.

3. Inside, the cathedral reveals its ancient Greek origins, with Doric columns from the original temple of Athena integrated into the walls, offering a unique blend of ancient and Christian architecture.

4. The cathedral is not just a religious building but a symbol of Syracuse's layered history, from its Greek origins to its role in Christian and Sicilian history.

5. The Piazza Duomo, in front of the cathedral, offers a splendid setting with its Baroque buildings and open-air cafes, making it a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

Visiting the Ortigia Cathedral provides an insight into the diverse cultural and historical influences that have shaped Syracuse, making it a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and the enduring spirit of Sicily.

Ortigia Cathedral

Alghero Old Town, located on the northwest coast of Sardinia, is a charming and historic seaside district brimming with Catalan influence. Known as “Barceloneta” or “Little Barcelona,” this medieval town enchants visitors with its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and stunning sea views. Surrounded by well-preserved fortifications and bastions, Alghero offers a blend of cultural heritage, Mediterranean charm, and culinary delights. 
1. The Catalan-Gothic architecture reflects the town’s rich history, particularly in landmarks like the Cathedral of Santa Maria and Palazzo Guillot. 
2. The sea walls and bastions, such as the Bastione della Maddalena, offer picturesque promenades with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, especially during sunset. 
3. Narrow cobblestone streets lead to charming squares, artisan shops, and boutiques selling local crafts, coral jewelry, and Sardinian delicacies. 
4. The Tower of Sulis and other historic watchtowers tell the story of the town’s strategic significance and provide great photo opportunities. 
5. Alghero’s lively atmosphere is enhanced by its cafes, gelaterias, and seafood restaurants, where visitors can enjoy Sardinian specialties like aragosta alla catalana (Catalan-style lobster). 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 2–3 hours wandering the old town, with extra time for dining or enjoying a sunset stroll along the sea walls. Visit in the evening for a magical ambiance when the streets come alive with lights and activity.

Alghero Old Town

Rising from the desert plains like a vision from another time, Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved ksars (fortified villages). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning earthen settlement along the former trans-Saharan trade route has been a backdrop for countless films and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. With its towering mudbrick kasbahs, labyrinthine alleys, and breathtaking mountain views, Aït Benhaddou is a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts.

1. A walk through the ancient ksar winds past traditional mudbrick homes, narrow alleyways, and merchant stalls, offering a glimpse into centuries-old Moroccan architecture and way of life.

2. A steep climb to the granary at the top rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and the winding Ounila River, making it a perfect spot for photography.

3. A visit to a family home inside the ksar provides an intimate look at how locals maintain and preserve these historic structures, keeping Berber traditions alive.

4. A crossing over the shallow river on foot or by donkey adds to the adventure, especially in spring when the water level rises and the kasbah reflects beautifully in the water.

5. A golden-hour glow at sunset bathes the mudbrick walls in warm hues, creating an unforgettable scene that makes Aït Benhaddou one of the most photogenic spots in Morocco.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for pleasant temperatures. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid crowds and offers the best lighting for photos. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for climbing the steep paths. Bringing cash is useful for small entry fees, souvenirs, and local cafés, as card payments are rarely accepted.
