This hands-on craft experience is hosted a kintsugi artisan, Satoko, who has been teaching the art and philosophy of this traditional Japanese technique in Kyoto for several years.

The workshop begins with a relaxing tea time, during which you'll be able to get to know your host and learn about her background in kintsugi. From there, you'll learn the history and aesthetics of kintsugi while handling finished pieces created by your host. As you admire the gold-lined cracks, Satoko will walk you through each step of the process and introduce the traditional tools and materials you’ll use — including some that you’ll prepare by hand.

Then, it’s time to practice. You’ll repair a broken ceramic piece using lacquer and real gold powder — that draws the eye to the details. Throughout the session, your hosts offer individual guidance to ensure your piece becomes a personal and beautiful expression of this philosophy.

Set in a private room in a Kyoto restaurant, this experience is completely private for you to enjoy the traditional kintsugi process. Your host has extensive experience as a kintsugi artisan and is a dedicated teacher who has introduced international guests to kintsugi through years of patient, thoughtful instruction.

Satoko Naito spent a formative eight-year period in Europe and speaks French, English, and Japanese. She discovered kintsugi after that, and for a decade since, she has devoted herself to mastering this art of repair. She regards kintsugi as a philosophy — a poetic expression of imperfection and renewal. Today, she is delighted to share it not only as a craft, but as l'art de vivre (the art of living).

Satoko emphasizes traditional kintsugi — using natural urushi lacquer, patient curing times, and deliberate methods rather than shortcuts — to offer students an authentic, slow, and deeply rewarding experience. In this workshop, she ensures you work with thoughtfully prepared materials and receive guidance at every stage. Your finished piece will reflect the beauty and resilience found in restoration.

Morocco

This unique, art-centered experience in an artist's studio offers a rare and exclusive opportunity to explore the Moroccan contemporary art scene. During a round-trip day visit from Marrakesh, accompanied by a Comptoir des Mines Galerie curator, you will travel to an artist's studio for an intimate exploration of art and creativity. Along the way, the curator will share the gallery's story and provide background on the artistic journey ahead.

You will be invited on a detailed guided tour of the artist's studio, personally led by both the artist and the curator. This part of the experience is rich with insights, as you'll learn about the artist's journey, techniques, the deeper messages behind their work, and the cultural and historical influences that shape their art. This day-long tour takes travelers to Magdalena de Kino, Sonora—a historic pilgrimage town with deep cultural and spiritual significance. You’ll explore the legacy of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, Jesuit missionary, explorer, and advocate for Indigenous communities.

You’ll visit his resting place, explore mission-era churches, and learn how the region’s Indigenous and colonial histories continue to shape the cultural fabric of northern Mexico. The tour follows historic routes—many originally carved by Indigenous peoples and later adopted by missionaries and settlers.

Through guided interpretation, conversations with residents, and time spent in plazas, chapels, and markets, you’ll gain a vivid sense of life in a Mexican border town. You'll also explore the surrounding Sonoran Desert, home to the iconic saguaro cactus.

Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border.

Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico.

Rocío is a graphic designer who has managed communications projects for a range of institutions, including government agencies and nonprofits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She loves sharing the diversity and richness of the region through visual storytelling.

Set around Monte Pulchiana, Europe’s largest granite monolith and a designated natural monument, this experience leads you across a terrain shaped by wind, water and time. Jaime (also known as Ja Cariocandino) will introduce you to the city’s layered identity through a tour structured around ten public spaces that—in his expert opinion—are architecturally remarkable. The tour includes transport by private vehicle, punctuated by short walks designed to deepen your understanding of the urban landscape and local community.

Valparaíso's distinctive topography—with steep hills surrounding a narrow coastal plain—has shaped how people live, move, and build here. Rather than focusing on tourist hubs, Jaime’s route centers on spaces that have emerged organically through civic use and historical need. Highlights include plazas, markets, housing developments, and hidden side streets that form the city's lived core. He’ll explain how these spaces emerged with the expansion of the flat part of the city: El Plan, or the “Horn” of Valparaíso.

Having studied every corner and curve of this place built on 45 hills, he shares the cultural story behind each edifice. His career took him to Brazil, where he published papers and conducted further research into the landscape of urban design. Upon returning to Valparaíso, Jaime established his own architectural firm.

Jaime never leaves home without his sketchbook and trusty pencil. His mission is to inspire creativity in every traveler who sets foot in his home city and to encourage them to look beyond the surface. A rich storyteller with a passion for people and place, his sketching and architectural experiences are filled with captivating tales.

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.
