An exclusive access route opens two spaces normally closed to regular visits. At the Bramante Staircase, you’ll see the original 1505 helical ramp built for papal carriage traffic, and when permitted, you could climb it to experience the shallow, continuous slope and feel how it was made to move people and horses. In the Niccoline Chapel, built for Nicholas V, Fra Angelico’s cycles of St Stephen and St Lawrence fill a small room with dense color and gilt stars.

Held at a studio in the Fatih District, this three-hour workshop allows participants to engage with this rare and luxurious technique under the guidance of master artist Şeyma Çınar.

During this session, you will learn the fundamentals of miniature painting, from traditional brushwork to layering vibrant pigments. You will also work with real gold leaf powder, mastering the delicate application techniques that add depth and brilliance to miniature art. The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a master artist specializing in miniature art, Tezhip (Islamic illumination), and floral designs since 1998. With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. She will be accompanied by a translator, allowing everyone to fully engage with her insights and expertise.

Japan

Whether you love to cook or simply appreciate the subtle flavors of Japanese cuisine, this private experience hosted by a Kyoto chef will satisfy your curiosity about the world of dashi, the foundational ingredient in most Japanese dishes. Hosted in his intimate restaurant, Chef Toshihiko Yamamoto will explain the history and importance of dashi in Japanese cooking while together, you prepare a fresh batch of dashi to use for an exquisite meal. You will shave the dried bonito into flakes and boil it with kombu kelp into a broth rich with umami flavor.

Next, Chef Yamamoto will prepare a special meal with a little help from you, creating Western-Japanese fusion dishes to show how easily dashi can be used as an ingredient to your own style of cuisine. As he prepares the meal, feel free to ask questions or take photos and video of the process. After the meal, the chef will prepare a bowl of matcha in the style of Omotesenke tea cermony, the perfect way to wrap up this unique experience.

With nearly a decade's experience working for a dashi company and years as a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, Chef Yamamoto brings a new perspective to the use of Japanese dashi in cuisine from other parts of the world. Rather than focusing solely on traditional Japanese dishes, he will show you how dashi can be used to creatively season other dishes, from wagyu beef to fried cheese.

This interactive experience allows you to participate in the dashi making process while getting a close-up view of a Japanese chef preparing a special private meal in his own restaurant. You'll also help with making some other simple dishes. While Chef Yamamoto speaks limited English, his friendly demeanor and passion for sharing the virtues of dashi with the world will make your time with him a pleasurable memory of Kyoto. This temple, often mistakenly associated with the goddess Diana, is a significant symbol of Roman influence in the region. Its Corinthian-style columns and the architectural design reflect the city's historical importance and one of the few archeological remains of that period. Surrounding the Roman Temple there are several Palaces from different periods, a small romantic garden with a great view and several cultural institutions, such Évora Museum, the Public Library, the Enoteca and Eugénio de Almeida Foundation.

The Square of Condes de Vila Flor is a time capsule regarding different historic-artistic periods. In the center of the square, there's one of the iconic images of Évora -  the Roman Temple, from 1st century BCE. Surrounding it, some preserved medieval walls from the old castle area, but also, the Cadaval Palace, the Lóios Palace, the Vimioso Palace and the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation -  former Inquisition Palace.

The Palácio Dom Manuel I, originally a convent transformed also into a royal palace, showcases a blend of Gothic, Manueline, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles. It's known for its elegant Manueline porch and Mudéjar-style loggia. Today host the Évora interpretive center, exploring the city rich history through distinct chronological periods.

The palace, a significant late medieval and renaissance structure, played a vital role during the 15th-16th century Portuguese Discoveries Age, hosting cultural and political activities, when Évora was one of the Kingdom main city. It's a living testament to the vibrant intellectual life of Évora during its golden age.

The Church of Misericórdia founded in early 16th century by the King D. Manuel I, will be rebuilt and enlarged in1554, as we can see today. The church, with a single nave and sober proportions, features a majestic set of baroque decoration, with tiles and gilded carvings from the 17th and 18th centuries, making it one of the most beautiful churches in the city of Évora.

The white church appears austere and simple from the outside, but inside, it's covered in magnificent tile decoration designed by the Lisbon workshop of master António de Oliveira Bernardes, one of the most famous of that time period.  Seven panels of tiles with blue cobalt and white decoration represents the Works of Mercy  and Spiritual Qualities.

The nave has a group of seven baroque paintings by the Eborense painter Francisco Xavier de Castro. On the main altar, we can see one of the largest set of gilded altarpiece in Évora.

Giraldo Square, the heart of Évora, is surrounded by medieval arches, a historic fountain, and 19th-century elite houses. The square's Renaissance white marble fountain, built in 1571, and S. Antão Church symbolizes the once city's richness and political relevance. Giraldo Square has been a focal point for social and cultural activities for centuries, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Évora throughout history, connecting the present to its past.

Praça do Giraldo is an icon of homage to the medieval christian warrior Geraldo Geraldes, the Fearless, who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167 and became its ruler. The square has architectural references from numerous historical periods: the arcades that adorn it on the side are from the medieval period, the beautiful marble fountain and the Church of Santo Antão, from the 16th century, and the neoclassical and romantic mansions of the Eborense elite are from the 19th century. Nowadays, it's the vibrant center of the city, with its restaurants, cafes, terraces and comercial, religious and cultural activities.

The Évora Cathedral, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. It stands as a symbol of the Christian reconquest and showcases the architectural transitions of the time. Featuring a huge gothic cloister and a unique rooftop walk, the cathedral showcases the blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. 

The Medieval Évora Cathedral was built entirely with austere dark granite- including the  Cloister, but will be  altered in different historical periods - from the 12th to the 18th century, resulting in immensely rich and heterogenic colorful decorated interiors.

The Cathedral terrace is the highest point in the city. From there you can see the entire city, whether the historic city within the walls, with all its heritage, or the new city made up of several neighborhoods all around. Furthermore, there is a vast horizon where you can see the extensive plain and some other historical locations.

The University of Évora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique - last portuguese king of 2nd dinasty, being the second university to be founded in Portugal,  after the University of Coimbra (1537). The university - established by the Jesuits, as the nearby Espírito Santo Church, once positioned Évora as Portugal's second city in terms of intellectual prominence. The university's architecture and the church's design reflect the city's academic, religious and artistic significance during different historical periods.

The spectacular building of the Old University of Évora is based on a quadrangular plan that surrounds a grand cloister, also known as Pátio dos Gerais. In the center there's a fountain, surrounded by colonnaded galleries, with the beautiful facade of the former chapel of the Colégio do Espírito Santo rising in the center. The various class-rooms of the school were covered with beautiful baroque tiles alluding to the subjects taught there – Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics and Fine Arts – forming one of the most important Baroque sets with secular themes found in Portugal. But there's also other decorative themes and techniques, such as paintings, inlaid stones and sculptures around the different rooms.

Salt, Song and Time in Cádiz

3-day itinerary in Cádiz blending Moorish history, flamenco traditions, sherry, sea-slowed meals.

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

How Many Gondolas?

Futuristic Canvas: MAXXI

San Giusto Castle, a historic fortress in Trieste, stands majestically on the hill of the same name. Built on the ruins of a Venetian castle, its origins date back to the 15th century. The castle offers a vivid retelling of Trieste's history, from Roman times to the present day. Roughly 300 years older than Miramare Castle, it offers a panoramic view of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding mountains​​. Why visit?
1 - Architectural Grandeur: The castle, a blend of medieval and renaissance architecture, showcases the transformation of Trieste through different historical periods. It features an array of rooms, including the 15th-century Captain's House, the Sala Caprin, and the late-Gothic Cappella di San Giorgio, each narrating a unique aspect of Trieste's past.

Karaalioglu Park

This is the view of The Red City, Marrakech’s medina from the panoramic terrace of Maison de la Photographie.

The museum of photographs is fascinating in how it came about – two famous photographers, Patrick Menac’h and Hamid Mergani, brought together their common passion for vintage Moroccan photography, and pooled their photos for the public to admire. Here I realize how black-and-white photos can dramatize the light-and-shadow effects in the medina.

From the terrace, you can have a glass of mint tea, and wonder about the thousands of satellite dishes that dominate the view. 

It’s peaceful here. On a clear day, you can see the snow-clad High Atlas Mountains. But you can’t see the chaos of Djemaa el-Fna, or hear shouts of ‘Balek!’ whenever donkey-carts come through laden with heavy goods. You can’t see the ‘hand of Fatima’ good-luck symbols painted on the carts after they have ambled past you. Or count the number of chickens being transported on the back of a groaning Vespa.

Pausing in the Frenzy

Emirgan Park, one of Istanbul’s largest and most scenic green spaces, offers a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Nestled along the Bosphorus, this historic park is known for its beautifully landscaped gardens, tranquil walking paths, and stunning views of the water. It’s particularly enchanting in April during the annual Tulip Festival, when millions of vibrant tulips create a spectacular tapestry of colors.

1. Tulip Festival Extravaganza: Visit in April to witness the park’s transformation into a floral wonderland. The meticulously arranged tulip displays highlight Turkey’s deep connection to this iconic flower.
2. Expansive Greenery: With over 100 acres of lush lawns, shady groves, and manicured gardens, Emirgan Park is perfect for picnics, family outings, or quiet reflection amidst nature.
3. Historic Pavilions: Admire the park’s three Ottoman-era pavilions—Yellow, Pink, and White—each showcasing elegant architecture and offering cozy cafes for tea or snacks.
4. Bosphorus Views: Stroll along paths that offer breathtaking vistas of the Bosphorus, especially from elevated points in the park. Early mornings or sunsets provide the most magical scenes.

Wander in Emirgan Park

The Puente Nuevo and Ronda Bullring are two of the most iconic landmarks in the picturesque town of Ronda, located in Spain’s Andalusian mountains. Together, they represent the unique blend of dramatic natural beauty and rich cultural heritage that makes Ronda a must-visit destination. The Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, spans the deep El Tajo Gorge, offering breathtaking views, while the Ronda Bullring, one of the oldest and most historic in Spain, is a testament to the town’s deep-rooted connection to bullfighting.

Highlights of Puente Nuevo and Ronda Bullring:

1. Puente Nuevo: Standing 98 meters (about 320 feet) high, the Puente Nuevo bridges the gap between Ronda’s old and new towns over the El Tajo Gorge. The bridge’s stunning architecture and the panoramic views it offers make it one of the most photographed sites in Spain. From its viewing platforms, visitors can enjoy spectacular sights of the river below and the surrounding countryside.

2. Mirador de Ronda: Just steps from the Puente Nuevo, this viewpoint offers sweeping vistas of the gorge, the rolling hills, and the charming white-washed buildings perched on the cliffs. It’s the perfect spot to take in the beauty of Ronda.

3. Ronda Bullring (Plaza de Toros): Built in 1785, the Ronda Bullring is one of the oldest and most prestigious bullrings in Spain. This Neoclassical masterpiece is the birthplace of modern bullfighting, and visitors can explore its museum to learn about the history of this tradition and the famous bullfighters who have graced its arena.

4. Alameda del Tajo: A short walk from the bullring, this peaceful park is set along the cliffs, offering shaded paths and more impressive views of the surrounding landscape. It’s an ideal place to relax after exploring Ronda’s landmarks.

Tip: Be sure to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a local festival or bullfighting event in the historic bullring.

Puente Nuevo & Ronda Bullring

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

Tharros, located on the Sinis Peninsula in western Sardinia, is an ancient archaeological site that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s rich history. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BCE and later inhabited by Carthaginians and Romans, Tharros is a stunning open-air museum surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. With its well-preserved ruins, scenic coastal setting, and proximity to pristine beaches, Tharros is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. 
1. The archaeological ruins include remnants of Roman baths, streets, temples, and houses, offering insight into life in this once-thriving ancient city. 
2. The two standing columns, overlooking the sea, are among the most iconic features of the site, creating a striking contrast against the blue waters. 
3. The site is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sinis Peninsula, with its rolling hills, Mediterranean flora, and pristine coastline. 
4. Nearby, the San Giovanni di Sinis Church, one of Sardinia’s oldest Christian churches, adds an extra layer of historical and cultural interest to the visit. 
5. Tharros offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Oristano, making it a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours exploring Tharros and its surroundings. Wear sturdy shoes, bring sunscreen, and visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Combine your trip with a swim at nearby beaches like Is Arutas or San Giovanni di Sinis.

Tharros Sinis Peninsula

The historic city of Silves, located in Portugal’s Algarve region, offers a blend of rich heritage, stunning architecture, and delicious local sweets. Once the thriving capital of the Moorish Algarve, Silves is steeped in history, with landmarks that tell stories from centuries past. 

1. Silves Castle, a red sandstone fortress that towers over the city, is one of Portugal’s best-preserved Moorish castles. Dating back to the 8th century, its thick walls and towers offer incredible views of the surrounding countryside. Inside, you can explore ancient cisterns, arched pathways, and beautifully landscaped courtyards that make the history come alive.

2. The Silves Cathedral, located near the castle, is a remarkable Gothic structure built on the site of a former mosque. Step inside to admire its vaulted ceilings, ornate carvings, and tombs of local nobility. The cathedral’s unique blend of architectural styles reflects the city’s complex history of Moorish and Christian influences.

3. Silves is renowned for its traditional Algarvean sweets, especially treats made from almonds, figs, and carob. Pastry shops throughout the city offer a taste of classics like “Dom Rodrigo,” a delicate almond-and-egg-yolk dessert, and “Morgado,” an almond cake often filled with sweet egg cream.

4. The city’s Arade River waterfront is lined with picturesque cafes and offers a peaceful place to relax. Once a vital trading route, the river now provides a scenic backdrop as you stroll through Silves’ cobbled streets.

5. Annual events like the Silves Medieval Fair, held each summer, transform the city with reenactments, traditional markets, and street performances. It’s an immersive experience that brings Silves’ storied past to life in a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere.

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the scenic Arvanitia Promenade, a stunning coastal walkway that stretches for about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) along the base of Akronafplia Castle. This leisurely path connects Nafplio’s Old Town with Arvanitia Beach, offering breathtaking views of the Argolic Gulf and the surrounding cliffs. Lined with palm trees, fragrant flowers, and dramatic sea views, the promenade is a favorite for both locals and visitors looking for a relaxing walk, a scenic jog, or the perfect photo opportunity.

1. The panoramic sea views along the entire route provide perfect backdrops for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset.

2. The towering Akronafplia cliffs rise dramatically on one side, offering shade and a striking contrast to the open sea on the other.

3. The promenade leads directly to Arvanitia Beach, a small, pebbled spot perfect for a refreshing swim or sunbathing.

4. Benches placed along the route offer peaceful spots for relaxation, with views of Bourtzi Fortress floating in the harbor in the distance.

5. The pathway is lined with local flora, including oleanders and citrus trees, adding vibrant colors and a fragrant touch to your walk.
