Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. The finished Chanchito is small enough to slip into even the smallest bag and may be kept for yourself or gifted to a loved one back home to bring them luck. While you work, Marcela will explain the history behind these three-legged pigs typically made in Pomaire. She will share further insight on the development of Chilean art and crafts from pre-Columbian times to the modern day as well as mythological stories. While in her studio, you can check out what she is currently working on and hear about her artistic achievements.

Marcela's studio is attached to her home above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concon, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This area is often skipped by international tourists which means you get to experience a truly local community. To conclude your trip to Concon, Marcela will recommend local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

DAY 2 – THE BOTANICAL QUINTA | Spend the day exploring the valley’s heart with Carlos and Paulo. Begin with a silent cruise along the Douro aboard a solar-powered boat, then ride in a restored vintage Bedford van up the terraced hills to a working vineyard and botanical estate. Walk among citrus trees and vines, visit the estate’s small museum, and taste their own Port Tonic and gin made from local herbs. A picnic lunch beneath the olive trees and an afternoon tasting at a nearby olive oil and wine producer round out a day of slow rhythm and vineyard life.
DAY 3 – THE WILD NORTHEAST | Travel north to Terra de Miranda, a land of forests, stone villages, and old customs. Guided by naturalist and photographer Alexandra Melo, explore chestnut groves and mountain viewpoints near Bragança, where wildlife and rural traditions coexist. Visit local artisans and dancers who keep alive the folk rituals and wooden masks of the mirandesa culture, a heritage recognized for its uniqueness in Portugal. It’s a day of stories, photography, and quiet connection with nature before returning through the valley at sunset.

Figueres, Spain, is home to the world-famous Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatre-Museu Dalí), an extraordinary tribute to the life and work of surrealist master Salvador Dalí. Designed by Dalí himself on the site of his hometown’s former theater, this immersive museum is as much a surrealist masterpiece as the art inside it. With its giant eggs on the roof, a Mae West room, and mind-bending installations, the museum offers visitors an unforgettable dive into Dalí’s eccentric and imaginative world.

Dalí Museum in Figueres

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the Luis Barragán House & Studio (Casa Estudio Luis Barragán), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Designed by Luis Barragán, one of Mexico’s most influential architects, this 1948 residence showcases his signature use of natural light, geometric forms, and vibrant colors, blending Mexican tradition with modernist design. Visiting this house offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a genius who revolutionized contemporary architecture.


1. Minimalist yet warm interiors, featuring Barragán’s signature earthy tones, natural wood, and striking pink, yellow, and orange walls.

2. Innovative use of light and shadow, where windows and skylights create a constantly changing interplay of illumination throughout the day.

Luis Barragán House & Studio

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Morocco

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the mystical Bordj El Berod, the ruins of a 17th-century watchtower that stands dramatically along the windswept coastline just south of the city. Shrouded in legend, this partially submerged fortification is believed by some to have inspired Jimi Hendrix’s song “Castles Made of Sand.” As the sun sets, the silhouette of the crumbling tower against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean creates one of the most breathtaking views in Essaouira, making it a must-visit spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.


1. The ruined watchtower, with its weathered stone arches and partially submerged base, creates an atmospheric setting for dramatic sunset photography.

2. The golden light reflecting off the Atlantic Ocean casts a magical glow on the ruins, making for unforgettable panoramic views.

3. The surrounding sandy dunes and rocky outcrops provide a peaceful spot to relax, picnic, or simply watch the waves roll in as the sun sets.

4. The area is a popular spot for camel rides and horseback excursions, offering a unique way to explore the coastline before sunset.

5. Local legends and its rumored connection to Jimi Hendrix add a layer of cultural intrigue, making it a great spot for music lovers and history buffs alike.

Visitor Tip: Visit during low tide for the best access to the ruins and bring sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be rocky. Don’t forget a light jacket—the coastal winds can get chilly in the evening.

Sunset at Bordj El Berod

Granada, Spain, is home to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel, two magnificent landmarks that showcase the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. The Granada Cathedral, an impressive masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, stands as a symbol of Catholic Spain’s triumph after the Reconquista. Next to it, the Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) houses the tombs of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, the Catholic Monarchs who completed the unification of Spain. Together, these sites offer a fascinating journey through Granada’s religious, artistic, and political history.

1. The Granada Cathedral’s towering white and gold interior, with massive columns and intricate details, creates a breathtaking sense of space and grandeur.

2. The Royal Chapel houses the marble tombs of Isabella and Ferdinand, beautifully sculpted and set above their final resting place in a crypt below.

3. The stunning stained-glass windows and elaborate altarpieces in both the cathedral and chapel reflect Spain’s Golden Age artistry.

Royal Chapel of Granada

I have traveled to Moab, Utah on more than one occasion and every time it has been an absolute blast! This small, more local town is home to some amazing things that you can’t find anywhere else. 

There is a place there that I travel to every time called Mill Creek Canyon. It is a short hike to a watering hole that supplies the river you will have to cross more than once. Once you reach the watering hole, you will find an amazing view and usually many friendly people depending on what time you go. 

Now, it can get pretty hot in Utah so don’t forget the water and the sunblock, as well as a swimming suit!

The main attraction there is the cliff jumping! You can climb up the small waterfall and there will be a small ledge where you can jump from into the freezing water below. Let me tell you, it’s an absolute blast that you will never forget! 

I highly recommend this location to all people, even if you’re just passing through

Wearing sturdy hiking boots is essential, and packing warm layers is recommended, as temperatures drop at higher altitudes. Hiring a local guide enhances the experience, especially for summit treks. Staying in a guesthouse or mountain refuge allows for acclimatization before long hikes.

Toubkal National Park

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to Templo Mayor, the heart of the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán. Discovered beneath the Zócalo (main square) in the 1970s, this archaeological site and museum showcases the remains of the Aztecs' most sacred temple, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli (god of war) and Tlaloc (god of rain). Walking through the ruins, visitors can imagine the grandeur of the Aztec empire before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.


1. The ruins of the main pyramid, which was built in seven layers over centuries, revealing the evolution of Aztec architecture.

2. The massive stone of Coyolxauhqui, a spectacular carved disc depicting the dismembered moon goddess, a key figure in Aztec mythology.

3. The Serpent Heads, large stone sculptures of feathered serpents (Quetzalcóatl) that once adorned the temple's walls.

Meet the Lion. Landlord of the Okavango floodplains. The fearless prides of lions here are known to hunt buffaloes and elephants. They have large prides, with several young cubs. In the delta, as it is elsewhere, it’s all about power and opportunism.

The delta is clearly a fluke of nature, and the way to appreciate it best is from the air, especially in June and July when you can see the progress of the rain water flooding into the area and turning it into a lush paradise teeming with wildlife. 

It’s a very special place.
