Your host Irene will introduce you to her parents Gianni and Eliana - the founders - who share the delicate process of repairing porcelain faces and preserving the memories these objects carry.

The walk continues through the neighborhood and the stories that influenced its identity: the old slaughterhouse complex, the amphora-stacked hill known as Monte dei Cocci, and the covered market that still anchors local life. Irene brings a deep knowledge of Testaccio’s social history, showing how her family’s workshop grew out of the same working-class fabric that defines the district.

The experience ends with a stop at a historic pastry shop where you’ll taste a maritozzo con panna and learn the story behind its name — and generous filling.

She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Her work draws from historical archives and years of field research, focusing on the social transformations of urban districts and the shifting boundaries between city centers and peripheries.

France

Built to trace Bordeaux’s role in the Atlantic slave trade, this historic walk begins in Place de la Bourse, continues to the Grand Théâtre, along Cours de Verdun and into Place des Quinconces, then reaches the quays.

While crossing the city center, the narrative spans the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century, when the city armed 508 expeditions linked to about 150,000 Africans deported to the Americas. Facades, street names and public art expose merchants, shipowners, and fortunes amassed through the exploitation of enslaved people.

At each stop Hubert unpacks how a voyage was outfitted, who financed it, where profits went and what awaited the enslaved across the ocean, then turns to Girondin deputies and abolition. A brief coffee stop softens the pace. On the riverfront, the focus shifts to memory today, from plaques to the statue of Modeste Testas, and to how the city confronts this painful past.

What sets this experience apart is immersion in a painful history that shaped Bordeaux. The story is read where it happened, in the texture of the city center, with façades, carved emblems, place names, plaques, memorials, the line of the quays. On this fascinating photowalk of a lesser-known Tokyo neighborhood, photographer Lee Chapman guides you through the changing streets he has been documenting through his photographs for over a decade. Far from the steel and glass monuments of Shinjuku and Shibuya, this low-lying neighborhood in the shadow of Tokyo Skytree has been slowly evolving away from its working-class identity.

Lee introduces you to the main characters of his story, buildings and businesses that have survived decades in this neighborhood. Others survive only in memory, memorialized by Lee's beautiful images that he shows you as you walk, sometimes standing in front of the place that no longer exists.

Take a short break in a tiny local restaurant or coffee shop where Lee knows the owners by name to enjoy a refreshing drink or an inexpensive meal as Lee shares his memories and thoughts about the changing neighborhood.

Morocco

This is a moderately challenging private trek to the revered Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, starting from Imlil. This trek takes you through the traditional village of Aremd and ascends to 2350m (7710ft) at Sidi Chamarouch, positioned by a picturesque waterfall. 

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. This trek offers a serene yet adventurous journey to the Sidi Chamarouch shrine, a site of deep spiritual and cultural significance in the High Atlas Mountains. This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.

The best time to visit is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) for ideal trekking conditions. Wearing sturdy hiking boots is essential, and packing warm layers is recommended, as temperatures drop at higher altitudes. Hiring a local guide enhances the experience, especially for summit treks. Staying in a guesthouse or mountain refuge allows for acclimatization before long hikes.

Toubkal National Park

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Dar Batha Museum, a former royal palace turned cultural treasure, showcasing an exquisite collection of Moroccan art and craftsmanship. Built in the 19th century by Sultan Moulay Hassan I, this stunning Andalusian-style palace features intricate tilework, carved cedarwood ceilings, and a peaceful courtyard garden. Today, the museum houses a diverse collection of ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and traditional artifacts, offering visitors a deep insight into Moroccan heritage.


1. The majestic entrance, decorated with intricate zellij tilework and carved wooden doors, reflects the elegance of traditional Moroccan architecture.

Dar Batha Museum

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

I often drive the two hours to catch the sunrise in Virginia Beach. Rudee’s Inlet is a favorite spot because of the contrast of the rocks.

Set off on an extraordinary journey of the mind at the Museum of Illusions Madrid. This fascinating museum, located at Calle del Doctor Cortezo, 8 in Madrid, offers a one-of-a-kind immersive experience that blends art, science, and illusion. Opened in June 2020, it's a relatively new addition to Madrid's cultural scene but has quickly become a must-visit destination. This museum is part of the global Museum of Illusions chain, celebrated for its mind-bending and interactive exhibits. Top highlights:
1. The museum houses an array of artworks, interactive displays, and holograms that challenge your perception of reality. Featuring works by artists specializing in optical illusions, including Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher, it's a place that bewilders and amuses in equal measure.
2. Among its many attractions, the museum features the Ames Room, where people appear to grow or shrink, the Rotated Room that challenges your sense of balance, and the Infinity Room that creates an endless mirror effect, reminiscent of Yayoi Kusama's works.
3. Prepare to defy the laws of physics in the Anti-Gravity Room and navigate the disorienting Vortex Tunnel. These exhibits play with the perception of gravity and balance, offering a thrilling experience.
4. The museum, designed by Roko Zivkovic and Tomislav Pamukovic, focuses more on the content of the exhibits rather than the building's architectural design. The interior is a carefully crafted space of optical illusions and interactive displays.
This is one of the several small but perfectly crafted museums in Madrid - we recommend visiting a couple of them while you are in the city. Madrid’s Museum of Illusions

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

Day Hike: wedding Cake Rock

Trieste, Italy, is home to the Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill turned Nazi concentration camp during World War II. As the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy, it serves as a chilling yet essential reminder of one of history’s darkest periods. Today, the site operates as a museum and memorial, honoring the thousands of political prisoners, partisans, and Jewish victims who were imprisoned, tortured, and deported from this location. Walking through the stark, somber complex offers a powerful and deeply moving experience.


1. At the entrance, a vast, empty courtyard evokes a haunting sense of history, where prisoners once stood before being interrogated or deported to Auschwitz and other camps. The atmosphere is solemn and reflective.

2. Inside the museum, exhibits display personal belongings, historical documents, and testimonies from survivors and victims, providing an in-depth look at the horrors that took place here.

3. In the remains of the former crematorium, visitors can see the chilling site where bodies were burned after executions. The original structure was destroyed by retreating Nazis in an attempt to hide evidence of their crimes.

4. Along the walls, prison cells used for interrogation and solitary confinement remain preserved, offering a stark reminder of the suffering endured by those who were held here.

5. The steel memorial sculpture, designed by architect Romano Boico, stands as a tribute to the victims, its cold, industrial design reflecting the brutal reality of the site’s past.

Visitor Tip: Visit with an open heart and allow time to reflect. The museum is free to enter, and audio guides are available to provide deeper historical context.

Step into a unique blend of industrial history and artistic elegance at Centrale Montemartini, a museum that breathes new life into the remnants of a former power plant. This unconventional cultural space, located on the outskirts of Rome, offers a captivating journey through time and technology, including:
