Through dialogue, ritual and storytelling, he helps people encounter the spiritual, cultural and human dimensions of Shinto in a way that feels personal, thoughtful and grounded.

A former schoolteacher who has also lived in Australia and Sweden, Yuki-san speaks excellent English. Through the International Administration of Jinja Honcho (Association of Shinto Shrines), he has guided foreign diplomats and ambassadors to Ise Grand Shrine and shrines across Japan and has participated in international religious conferences.

With deep roots in shrine life and an international perspective, he shares Shinto not as an abstract subject, but as a living part of Japanese daily life. Through his work, he takes part in important moments in people’s lives, from prayers for safe childbirth to weddings and seasonal festivals.

This exploration of three lesser-known, evocative temple gardens in Kyoto offers a deep understanding of Japanese dry landscape design — where every stone, every line of raked gravel, carries meaning. Led by certified garden designer and author Ayumi Ikushima, the experience opens a thoughtful path into the philosophy and form of Zen gardens.

You’ll begin at the Crane and Turtle Garden where Ayumi introduces the foundational principles of Japanese garden design: symbolism, placement, interplay between nature and intention. 

A short walk takes you to a second temple where the garden reflects nature in miniature — a landscape composed to invite observation. You’ll learn to see and photograph the space mindfully.

Your final stop is a larger temple with a modern take on the tradition. A resident monk leads a meditation in view of the garden, offering how stillness and landscape are meant to interact. Then, you'll sit with Ayumi over tea and seasonal sweets to reflect and ask questions.

She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. The castle is easily accessible by car, and it's recommended to visit by this means due to limited public transportation options.

Moorish Silves Castle

Mafra Palace, an architectural masterpiece of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, stands majestically in the town of Mafra, just outside Lisbon. Built in the early 18th century by King João V, this palace was originally intended to fulfill a vow after the birth of his first child. Today, it is one of Portugal’s most remarkable historical monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its lavish design, extensive library, and impressive basilica. Mafra Palace has also gained literary fame through Nobel Laureate José Saramago’s novel, Baltasar and Blimunda, which immortalizes the palace’s history and symbolism in Portuguese culture.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA), one of the most important fine art museums in Latin America. Located in the elegant Recoleta district, the museum houses an impressive collection of European masterpieces, Argentine art, and pre-Columbian artifacts, offering visitors a journey through centuries of artistic expression. With free admission, MNBA is a must-visit for art lovers and culture enthusiasts.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

The Peggy Guggenheim Museum is a modern art sanctuary. Set in the historic Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, this museum was the home of Peggy Guggenheim, an American heiress and art collector, making it one of Venice's most intriguing attractions. Top reasons to visit:
 
1 - At the heart of the museum is Guggenheim's personal collection, acquired between 1938 and 1946. It features an array of Italian Futurists and American Modernists, highlighting genres like Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. This collection not only reflects her exquisite taste but also her foresight in identifying talents like Jackson Pollock.

Peggy Guggenheim Museum

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Heart and Souk

If you are interested in rare natural phenomena and want to learn more about marine life, you should head to Mexico's Pacific coast. One of the best spectacles is the annual whale migration, where you can catch unique glimpses of humpback whales. 

The largest mammals on earth have earned their reputation as the most beautiful, intelligent, and impressive creatures. If you watch the ocean at migration time (either from the shore or on a boat tour), you'll see baby whales leaping and maybe even hear mother whales calling their families together. The baby-whale season is from January until the end of April.

But the Pacific coast is not only known for whales. It's just as beautiful to watch sea turtles hatch. If you come at the right time, you can witness mother turtles laying hundreds of eggs overnight in the soft sand on the coast, and much later, those hundreds of babies hatch and crawl toward the sea. Come between late August to early October.

Witnessing whale migration

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the mystical Bordj El Berod, the ruins of a 17th-century watchtower that stands dramatically along the windswept coastline just south of the city. Shrouded in legend, this partially submerged fortification is believed by some to have inspired Jimi Hendrix’s song “Castles Made of Sand.” As the sun sets, the silhouette of the crumbling tower against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean creates one of the most breathtaking views in Essaouira, making it a must-visit spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.


1. The ruined watchtower, with its weathered stone arches and partially submerged base, creates an atmospheric setting for dramatic sunset photography.

2. The golden light reflecting off the Atlantic Ocean casts a magical glow on the ruins, making for unforgettable panoramic views.

3. The surrounding sandy dunes and rocky outcrops provide a peaceful spot to relax, picnic, or simply watch the waves roll in as the sun sets.

4. The area is a popular spot for camel rides and horseback excursions, offering a unique way to explore the coastline before sunset.

5. Local legends and its rumored connection to Jimi Hendrix add a layer of cultural intrigue, making it a great spot for music lovers and history buffs alike.

Visitor Tip: Visit during low tide for the best access to the ruins and bring sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be rocky. Don’t forget a light jacket—the coastal winds can get chilly in the evening.

Sidi Mohammed Museum

Named for its centuries-old pigeon houses carved into the cliffs, Pigeon Valley offers scenic hiking trails and panoramic views that capture the essence of Cappadocia’s beauty.
